About listing

The apartment occupies the top two floors of a Georgian townhouse in Bloomsbury, a quiet, elegant corner of central London, close to Russell Square, Kings Cross-St Pancras and Chancery Lane tube stations. You are in the centre of London, close enough to walk to most of the places you'll want to visit, short bus or tube rides to other tourist must-sees, but this is a quiet, secure part of town with little night time traffic or noise. The most common phrases in our visitor's book are 'great location' and 'we'll be back'. Built in the 1790s, this historic building boasts all the luxuries of a modern home, including a fully-equipped kitchen (washer/drier for clothes, dishwasher, oven, hob, microwave, fridge/freezer plus lots of pots, pans and utensils for cooking), satellite TV and DVD player, free wi-fi, power shower and modern bathroom. The spacious living room is light and airy with two large sofas plus a chair that converts into a comfortable single bed. The TV has multiple satellite channels including Sky Sports & Sky Cinema and there are speakers for your MP3 player, a dvd player and a few DVDs. Our bookshelf is stuffed with books which feature London. guidebooks for London and maps for you to take with you as you explore the city. We also have a few toys for young children and games. Two large sash windows with Georgian wooden shutters look out to the historic street below. The adjoining kitchen is light, spacious and has a dining table and six chairs. It has everything you would expect in a modern kitchen; oven, hob, large refrigerator, separate freezer, dishwasher, washing machine (with tumble drier function), microwave oven, kettle, toaster and two coffee makers. The kitchen has plenty of crockery and cutlery, cooking utensils, baking trays, saucepans, a wok, pots, pans and everything you need to make a family supper and eat in. We also have a flask and some sandwich boxes for you to make lunch and take it out with you (ideal if you are feeding a family). A short but steep flight of stairs leads up to two bedrooms and a bathroom. The bathroom has a bath and separate shower, with plentiful hot water. The basin has a mirror over it and the heated towel rail keeps the bathroom warm and cosy. The large master bedroom has a king-size double bed and a single bed with large wardrobe, feature mirror and Victorian chest of drawers. It can sleep three people, but is usually used for two adults. The second bedroom has two single beds (adult sized) with Victorian chest of drawers, hanging space for clothes and mirror. Both bedrooms have 'black-out' blinds so that you are not woken by early morning sun. A cot and highchair are available on request. Bed linen and towels included. A hairdryer, an iron and ironing board are provided, along with an umbrella. A good choice of restaurants are within a 5 minute walk and there is a large Waitrose supermarket 10 minutes walk away in The Brunswick Shopping Centre. A smaller Co-Op supermarket is a convenient 3 minute walk. This is an ideal holiday home for a family or friends looking to explore London from a central base. John Street is a six minute walk from Russell Square tube station (subway) or Chancery Lane tube station. We are a 15 minute walk to Kings Cross-St Pancras stations (tube and Eurostar trains to France). We will send you full directions when you book. Just let us know which airport or train station you arrive at. Getting Here - Air: It is an easy journey from London Heathrow Airport to John St, as the local tube (subway or underground) station runs directly to the airport. From there it's a 6 minute walk to the apartment. From other London airports (Gatwick, Stansted, Luton or City airports), you can take the train into the centre of London and make a short tube or taxi journey to the apartment. We will send you full directions when you book. Getting Here - Rail: John St is a fifteen minute walk from the mainline stations, Kings Cross and St Pancras International where the Eurostar service from Paris, Lille and Brussels now departs. Euston Station is a few minutes further away. It is a short bus ride from London Bridge and Waterloo stations. Paddington is a tube ride away. No hidden extras: Price quoted includes VAT (sales tax), bed linen, towels and cleaning. There are no hidden extras to pay to the property owner. UPDATE: January 2016 - we have updated our wi-fi connection and we now have faster wifi (35mbps) in the living room, kitchen and also upstairs in the bedrooms. ALLERGY SUFFERERS: we have blinds (no curtains), wooden floors in the bedrooms (the only carpet is in the hallway) and can supply feather-free bedding on request. HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE COMING? - we have six sleeping places but as we only have one bathroom we do not let the apartment to six people. If you are a party of five, please state if you would prefer to have three people sharing the largest bedroom (in one double and one single bed) OR one person sleeping in the living room. We will only make up beds for the number of people you tell us are staying. If you have any questions about the apartment, the local area or London generally, please get in touch by email or phone.

The apartment was absolutely fantastic and very centrally located. It was quite easy to find and the apartment was nice and clean. We stayed a week and found that the location was perfect for the many things we wanted to see. We are a family of five with three children aged 7, 12 and 15. Nice places for take away too. We had African, Indian, Chinese, British (fish and Chips) and American (papa Johns pizza). The only thing was really poor wifi. On the top floor we didn't get any connection at all. Downstairs the wifi only worked in the kitchen and very poorly. So if you need Internet connection this apartment is not recommended at all. 18 October 2015 - 20:56:01

Melissa was very helpful in greeting us and helping us get settled in (and very helpful when we locked ourselves out!). The flat was a great launching point to explore London. Shopping and restaurants close by for necessities and a comfortable walking distance for me and my family to get to two underground stations. I have no hesitation in recommending this place to others. 11 June 2017 - 18:42:00

Loved how big the apartment was, plenty of room for us to dine/relax together and then retire to private spaces at night. Location is good and an easy walk to 2 tube stations and within walking distance of many attractions. The overall booking/checkin/checkout process was smooth with no problems. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking and having a washer is a plus! Beds/pillows were comfortable. The apartment is on the top floor, so there are a number of stairs which would be a problem for those with limited mobility. We did buy a portable fan (which we left behind) to circulate the air as a few nights got warm, but overall we were very pleased and would stay here again if we were to return. 17 July 2017 - 12:50:00

Our family of five enjoyed a very good stay at this Bloomsbury flat. Close to the British Museum, the Russell Square tube station, a large Sainsburys, and bus lines to both the City and S Kensington, this clean flat offered a comfy bed for each of my kids, high ceilings, and good value. We had an issue with a small appliance which the management resolved within twenty-four hours. Recommended! 21 August 2017 - 21:48:00

The apartment was better than expected, extremely clean and well presented. Great location with access to Russel St and Holbern Station in easy walking distance. Very good ideas and information in the apartment. Overall a great experience. 14 February 2008 - 12:57:13

We were thrilled we found this flat in our search for the perfect place to stay in London on a family budget because it was absolutely wonderful!!! We stayed there in mid-March and despite the cold weather, ourtside the flat was perfect for us!!! We found the flat to be very conveniently located to all the major tourist attractions that London has to offer! It was just a few minutes walk to 3 different tube lines and in a very safe neighborhood. There were some great local restaurants in the area and a grocery store nearby. Inside the flat was comfortable and had all the necessities. We enjoyed reading through the local interest books in your bookshelf and found the Rough Guide to London very helpful! The washing machine came in very handy for our long stay!!! I would highly recommend this flat to any of our friends and family and to you reading this! 03 June 2008 - 13:05:51

The property is easy to access being on the Heathrow line and a 10 min walk from Russell Square Underground station. It is quite possible to walk to theatres in the West End. It was clean and roomy and the facilities were quite good except fot the hot water system which was temperamental.. The stairway up to the bedrooms is very steep. The owners were most helpful and provided very good service and information prior to the stay. They were available if required and left plenty of information handy about local services. Two good little pubs within 40 meters and lots of places to eat, food shop etc. Internet access within walking distance.. 17 July 2008 - 07:34:09

Great little find for my family. I currently live in the UK and needed a bigger place to house some family members 2 Adults and 3 Children, was excellent location, very spacious and good size bathroom and bedrooms. Only complaint was lots of stairs, but I'm use to that, my Aussie realitves were not! Would recommend again! 5/5 09 September 2008 - 11:31:32

We recently spent 6 days at this apartment and found it excellent. It was great having a kitchen given prices in London and the supermarket is quite close. The beds were really confortable and it was a quiet retreat at the end of the day. We had our 3 children with us and found the apartment much roomier than I expected. The owners were helpful and let us stay until 2.00pm on the day we were leaving. Just be warned that there quite a lot of steps! Australia 15 October 2008 - 01:34:43

The appartement is very well located within walking distance to a lot of central attractions. It is nicely furnished and has a comfortable living room as well as two cosy bedrooms. The kitchen is well equipped and has a comfortable place to eat for 5 people. The owner was very friendly, helpful and supportive. 07 October 2008 - 15:07:41

We stayed at this very pleasant clean apt for 4 nights in Sept with our 7 year old son. The apt is vey spacious and can easily sleep 5 adults. It was a 10 min walk to 3 tube stations and 10 min to a Waitrose Supermarket. It was very well provisioned with dishwsher, washing machine, kitchen utensils etc the only surprising thing was having to provide our own soap and toliet rolls - I think for this price or increasing the price to adjust it would be better to include such basic necesseties as it was along way to bring supplies from New Zealand on a Sunday with the shops shut! All public transport is free for children 11 and younger and all public museums are now free - the British Museum is within walking distance and Tower of London only a few tube stops. Buy an Oyster card for easy of use on buses and trains. Nearby there is a playground for young children. We ate one night at a nearby Italian Restaurant Ciao Bella that was recommended in the book, the place was full of people with piano player but the food was terrible - my risotto was with long rice and like a dry pilau not creamy. We took a 715am mini cab (the expensive one listed in the apt book) to London City Airport and it only cost 20 pounds and took 30 mins. The owners are very helpful with any queries you may have. A very convient base in London - would recommend to all (except those with disabilities). 13 October 2008 - 23:57:16

We are a family of four (2 adults, 2 children of 10 and 12). We stayed here for the first week of our five week European tour, and used it as base to see the sights of London. The apartment was very comfortable, very quiet and relaxing after hard days spent traipsing around the city. It has lots of space to spread out in after all the crowds. The location is convenient - two tube stations are nearby, a shopping centre, and various restaurants and shops. It's not the cheapest place to stay (especially with an A$ exchange rate!), but definitely worth the rate. The owners were friendly and helpful - we really felt welcome here. We will stay here again on our next trip to the UK. 06 January 2009 - 08:42:22

I would definitely recommend this flat mostly because everything that was advertised was absolutely true. That means: it is well located, there are two supermarkets quite near (and near the tube stations), and it looks as nice (or even better) as shown in the photos. It was perfectly clean and well maintained. I had all the support I asked from the owner and a lot of useful information. The owner is very formal. The only disadvantage I would find is the long stairs to reach the appartment, and that maybe it is a little expensive though worth the money paid. The whole family, my husband and my 3 children (already teenagers) loved the placed and we all felt very at ease! 09 September 2009 - 08:57:08
  14. It was a pleasure dealing with the efficient and prompt service leading up to the rental of 22 John St for two weeks in early Jan. The apartment was immaculately clean with large airy rooms and comfortable beds. A good television set with cable TV was provided as well as a DVD player and together with comfy lounges; enabled a relaxing time when it is too wet or cold to go out, The galley kitchen was well equipped that we were able to invite local friends to a couple of dinner parties. The apartment was quiet despite being in a central location with easy accessibility to the tube, buses and taxis. There were good supermarkets, cafes, pubs, bookshops and museums nearby and one could almost walk everywhere - in fact it is only a short walk to the British Museum and one could easily walk to Soho and the West End, Smithfield Markets and their surrounding restaurants and if one is too tired to walk, everything you would want to see is within 4 to 6 tube stations away. There are two stations on different lines - Holburn and Russell Square which took us to most of the places of interest to us. The shopping of Oxford St was a ten minute walk away as were the bookshops of Charring Cross Rd. The area around Bloomsbury and Camden felt safe and there were lots of happy young people around as there were university residential colleges around. Parks and squares were closeby where one could stroll and musical venues like Wigmore Hall or the Barbican were not too far away either. While cafes like Carluccio's were only near the station, one of the best Chinese restaurant Hakkasan is only a 15 min walk from the flat providing delicious yum cha (as good as if not better than Hong Kong offerings) and for something more traditionally British and for delicious breads and pastry St John's Bread and Wine is a must and it is also a 15 min walk away as well. One of the best holiday rentals we have been in and we have been to many including New York, San Francisco, Orange County, Santa Monica, Vienna, Rome, Paris, Venice and Washington DC. HIghly recommended for a wonderful base to discover London and all it has to offer. Melissa who was the main person we dealt with, was helpful, available but never intrusive. 21 January 2010 - 05:00:33

The John Street flat was a perfect home-away-from-home for our family of 5. The rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable, the kitchen well-appointed and the situation both quiet and convenient. We walked there directly from the train station when we first arrived and set out on foot every morning during our stay. It's close to shops and transit and to many wonderful neighbourhoods and sites such as St Paul's and the theatre district. After a long day in fabulous London, you can shower, or soak in an ample tub, then enjoy a meal around the kitchen table and contemplate all that you saw and did. 17 March 2010 - 23:52:28

Our family of 5 (2 adults and 3 kids (11, 11 & 6 years) stayed at 22 John Street for 10 nights in early December. It was a perfect base for us and exactly as advertised: spacious and clean. The position is very convenient (easy walk) to Covent Garden, Oxford Street and Bloomsbury (with good shops at the Brunswick Centre - loved Carluccios Cafe!). We really enjoyed our trip to London. Thanks Melissa for providing such a wonderful rental apartment. 04 January 2011 - 10:30:33

We spent more than a week at the flat, and it was the perfect place for us and our 3 kids to start the day and to come back to after exploring the city. It has pretty much everything you need to feel at homefull kitchen, wifi, washing machine, a cell phone to borrow. It's spacious, secure, and well maintained. Melissa is very helpful and quick to respond to any questions. The location is convenient and close to a couple of Tube stops as well as several bus routes. It's also within walking distance to many locations and destinations. The immediate neighborhood is quiet but includes a bunch of good places to eat and shop, as well as Coram's Fields, a kids-only park. Highly recommended if you're looking for something more private than an AirBNB and more homey than a hotel. 30 June 2015 - 05:26:42
