About listing

We're in London's historic Gibson Square, which is an oasis of calm just off of Islington's lively Upper Street, where you'll find literally dozens of upscale bars, restaurants and shops. We're convenient to the major bus and tube lines running quickly to all the sights and tourist attractions you'll want to visit in this great city. The flat is on the Ground and Lower Ground floors of a Regency terraced town house. Travel back in time with us: all sides of the Square, and the park inside it, look just as they did when George III was busy losing the Colonies. This quiet, cozy, comfortable holiday rental flat features high ceilings in the principal rooms, cornice mouldings, and the original butler-buffed wood floors. The furnishings feature elegant Georgian mahogany, polished English silver and brass, and Colefax & Fowler fabrics. The kitchen is very well-equipped for cooking the gourmet treats to be found in the abundant local markets. Children over 12 welcome. Superfast WiFi and Sky TV featuring the Premium Sports and Movies channels. If you need another bedroom, just check out our Studio Flat right upstairs! It's HomeAway property 811435: www.HomeAway.co.uk/p811435 The Bus: Several key buses stop just three minutes from the house, giving convenient scenic access to all the museums, tourist sights, markets and historic neighbourhoods you'll want to see on your vacation, cheaper and often quicker than the tube. Unlike in most cities, here the bus is your friend, with its dedicated express lanes and incredibly low cost -- just £1.50 (or less) with the Oyster Card that you'll want to get the day you arrive! (OR, if your credit card is "contactless-enabled" -- as evidenced by four curved bars on the front, looking a bit like a radar signal -- then it IS your Oyster Card and you're good to roll. You get all the same benefits, like a £6.50 cap on your daily fares after which you ride free until midnight.) Take the splendid double-decker #4 red bus to Sadlers Wells, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Millennium Bridge to the Tate Modern and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, Fleet Street, Oxford Street shopping, Covent Garden and the West End theatres, and finally Waterloo Bridge across the River Thames to the South Bank (National Theatre, Royal Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, British Film Institute, Hayward Gallery, the London Eye), Imax, Waterloo Station, and the Old Vic. (All that in barely half an hour’s ride!) Other buses from this neighborhood have similarly-stunning itineraries The Tube and Rail System: It's just a 7-minute walk to the Angel Islington tube station (Northern Line, Zone 1) for quick connections throughout London – just 1 stop to the King's Cross / St Pancras transport hub for further tube connections, the Eurostar to Paris, and mainline trains to Scotland, the North of England, and Gatwick and Luton Airports. And yes, King's Cross does have a brick wall bearing the sign 'Platform 9 3/4". It's a 10-minute walk to the Highbury & Islington tube station (Victoria Line) connecting to the Stansted (Airport) Express, and looping through Central London to Victoria Station with connections to all lines. Arsenal's Emirates football stadium is at Highbury, as are National Rail's overground North London and Northern City Lines. Canary Wharf, the Financial District and the 2012 Olympics heritage sites are quickly accessed from here as well. Heathrow Airport, by the way, is best accessed by the 15-minute Heathrow Express train, which you get from Paddington Station, less than 20 minutes away by Uber or taxi. We could not have been happier with this flat. It was the perfect home base for our month in London; its convenient location made it easy to walk to shops, grocery stores, restaurants, and public transportation. The flat itself was beautiful and well-eqipped, and the garden sitting area was an added bonus. Gary, the owner, is very helpful and easy to work with and will respond quickly if you have a concern. Definitely recommend! 30 September 2015 - 14:37:18

The listing was extraordinarily accurate - and the photos were an excellent representation of the property. The decor is sophisticated, done with a perfect hand and lovely furnishings. With two floors, it feels like a whole house, and very private. Lovely garden, again, very very private. Two closets in the master! Small but very well appointed kitchen. Owners are the best, and have one of the most complete "info Books" we've ever seen. Everything clean and polished (thanks Maria!!). And the washing machine has a separate dryer, not a two step washer/dryer, which never gets clothes as nicely dry. Trust the photos, it is just as lovely as it looks! The neighbourhood has scores of good restaurants, as well as food shops big and small, on Upper street, a short two blocks away. Angel station is four blocks away. Taxis all around. Enjoy!! 06 June 2015 - 08:12:37

My wife and I travel frequently and have rented numerous properties through VRBO and I can honestly say we have never stayed at a more sublime home than Gary's Gibson Square town house. It is impeccably furnished by which I mean it is both attractive and comfortable, and has a well equipped kitchen. The shower, though small (it is England after all) works well and there is an efficient washer and dryer in a separate laundry room (a rare luxury in the UK). The paintings on the walls are really good, a rarity in rental properties. The flat is on a quiet, elegant square but only two blocks from Upper Street which is chock-a-block with restaurants, cafes, small theatres and upscale retailers. It's a short walk to the tube station, Boots, Marks and Spencer, Waitrose and Sainsbury. Best of all are Gary and Bill who are charming, responsive and concerned hosts. I could go on and on but just read the Gibson Square website: everything on it is true. 26 May 2016 - 18:16:00

From the minute I walked into Gibson Square, I was enchanted. I love beautiful surroundings, and Gary's house was an immediate feast for the eyes: gorgeous and immaculate. Exquisite woodwork and rich colour on the walls, the old plank wood floors gleam, and everywhere you turn there's something to delight the eye. I wandered around admiring everything until exhaustion overtook me, and then sat down on a beautiful armchair that turned out to be so cosy I took a long nap in it one day after a long outing. I'd been traveling for several weeks by the time I arrived, and was thrilled to do the laundry - using a real tumble dryer! Gary's precise directions gave me clean and sweet smelling clothes again, in just a couple of hours while I drank my morning coffee. If you know England, you know how rare that is! Wonderful shower - I luxuriated every day. Can't testify to the television and electronics - I never turned them on! There are marvellous books to read, and If I could have lit the whole place by candlelight, I would have left the electric off, as well. But the lighting is so subtle and artistic, with dimmers on everything and thoughtful spotlights everywhere: the Georgian gentlemen in their frames on the walls, the gleam of silver trays, the sunlight through the leaves in the beautiful garden - it was almost the same thing. The beds were exquisitely comfortable, and the square is so quiet - especially being so close to Upper St. in Islington. Gary provides all the information you need on everything in the home and in the area. Go to Ottolenghi's for dinner and takeout - amazing food, and a great way to meet people at the long communal table. If you're a vegetarian like me, indulge at The Gate - lovely food and atmosphere. Take Gary's advice and use the buses - especially from the stop at St Mary's Church, just a short stroll away. I took buses everywhere - great way to learn neighbourhoods. In Islington, great Vietnamese and Thai food abound, as well as every kind of omnivore's delight. Take in a performance at the King's Head Theatre Pub - what a hoot! I wandered home at nearly 2 am and felt absolutely safe. After a long day out exploring, Gibson Square was always bliss to come home to. I had friends come to stay for a night, and the marvellous Maria was a godsend in getting us sorted for parking (which I hadn't even thought about). t absolutely loved it, and miss it, still. It was an incomparable experience, and I'll be back. 06 June 2016 - 14:35:43

We had one week at the Gibson Square and we loved the garden. The accommodations were perfect for the four of us. It was situated in a great spot easy access to the tube and many, many great restaurants around the area. But we were both impressed by the attention Gary gave us answering emails and always being available to help us have a smooth holiday. If ever in London again, this is our place. 26 July 2016 - 16:47:00

Every thing you read in the reviews is true. The luxury towels, the garden, the extra converters & multi-outlet US plug (there was four of us and we all needed to charge something), all of it made our visit very personal and comfortable. This is the first time I have ever been excited about writing a review. The flat's only fault was it SPOILED me. I have stayed in a few VRBO places and none has ever come close to this one. If the flat is not available during your stay, I would recommend changing your trip dates to when it will be available. : )) Well worth it. 12 September 2014 - 10:07:16

We stayed in this charming flat for six weeks. It was perfect. The furnishings are lovely and the location ideal. It is close enough to enjoy the excitement of London but it provides a quiet oasis when you want to escape. I can't imagine a more ideal arrangement. The owners provided excellent customer service. Islington is filled with terrific restaurants and shops. The property was well maintained and very clean. I would HIGHLY recommend this London flat! 18 March 2009 - 03:30:08

We just returned from our trip to London yesterday, May 15th. Our stay was superb!!! The location was great and the flat very clean & well-maintained with all the amenities of home. Access to tube & buses was easy and within walking distance. When we returned from the hustle & bustle of the noisy and busy city, we came back to calm & tranquility. I highly recommend this property to anyone planning a trip to London. Tyler, Linda & Roland 16 May 2009 - 12:11:32

THE FLAT IS BEATIFUL!!!! We couldn't have asked for a nicer or cleaner place. When renting from the internet you just never know what you are getting until you actually get there. We thank Gary for being so honest with his photos and descriptions. There were no bad surprises...just great ones! We totally enjoyed the area, the closeness of the tube and the great restaurants, shops, bakeries and pubs. Even when we needed groceries it they were just steps away. When I get a chance to go back to England I contact Gary first about staying at this beautiful property. Thanks again Gary for a great place to stay and making us feel so welcome and comfortable. 17 August 2009 - 13:41:55

Stayed here with my husband and brother in-law in June. It's a beautiful flat, gorgeous interiors with a cool lay-out, comfy beds, a modern kitchen, and a pretty, private garden area out back, in a quiet neighborhood, but still an easy walk to bars, restaurants, groceries, drug store, transportation, bank, etc. Islington is a great neighborhood! Lots of charm and flavor. We had such a great stay! The owners always replied quickly to our emails and they provided lots of great info about the flat, and things to do. 21 August 2010 - 13:33:52

We were looking for appartments in two European cities for a two week holiday, experiencing in London and Venice true "urban" experience. Our criteria included: a "normal" neighborhood with easy access to public transportation, food markets + everything else you need for daily living. Well! the Garden Flat at Gibson Square in Islington, London, offered all of this and more, and especially a very quiet, extremely clean living environment, a very tastefully arranged flat and all the care given by Gary Gunas, the owner, to the immediate necessities of visitors to such a gigantic yet so friendly City. Gary has spared no effort in describing in minute details the functioning of everything at the flat, the services in the neighborhood and the numerous bus routes that bring you everywhere in most areas of London within minutes. In fact, the buses you take minutes from Gibson Square are so numerous and efficient that we did not take the Tube once and went out everyday by bus without encountering any traffic congestion !! You really have to do it to believe it. And by the way, the photos and descriptions you see on Home Away are exactly what you see when you get there. We cooked all our meals, sparing one dinner out, thanks to the modern, well equipped kitchen (small, but efficient, with a wonderful garden view; we even dined in the garden once, in the shade of mature trees and the beauty of a well designed and maintained garden... When one visits London, the choice may be too quickly made for a more "central" (and what does that mean, really?) hotel or apartment... Wrong choice, especially if you spend at least a week... The Islington environment offers the quietness and sense of tranquillity you will never find in so-called "central" locations. So if your thing is to live quietly (when you are not "out" sightseeing), out of the frenzy of the Center, you are into cooking and good wines for your dinners (quite good wine shops nearby), you like your sightseeing from the second deck of an "impriale" bus that will bring you at the door of the British Museum, the london Bridge, Piccadilly & Oxford Circus, Strand & Fleet Street, Hyde or Regent's park within minutes, then the garden Flat at Gibson Square is definitely for you... like it was for us ! The flat is extremely well appointed (complete with a trunk full of tea!); the square is beautiful and quiet, with terrific transport links - really, what more could one ask of a holiday rental in London? Somehow this letting manages to provide more! All the electronics and appliances left at your disposal include brilliantly-written instructions that are crystal clear, and if there is any confusion, you can always email Gary a question and receive a speedy and helpful response. We were awfully sad to leave Gibson Square and certainly would love to return some day. 20 October 2010 - 17:46:24

My wife, my two twin pre-teen girls and I spent a wonderful week at this beautiful flat; it is absolutely impeccable, has everything you need and is so nicely decorated that it really makes you feel at home with a very nice and elegant English style. Everything has been thought of by the owners and thoroughly explained in full detail both in a brochure (sort of instruction manual) as in every spot where an action has to be taken and you'll find a detailed label expalinig what to do. Everything works perfectly, and is very well kept, I am an architect myself and am extra picky with where I stay, believe me, in this flat I felt as staying in my own home away from home. On the other hand, dealing with Gary the owner was very pleasant, everything went as smoothly as it could, he was always reachable and diligent, it shows that he loves this place. The neighborhood has a great personality, it's lively and young and has this sense of being out of town whilst being in town, which is very pleasant. We can't wait to plan our next trip back and stay here again! 15 July 2011 - 21:35:53

My husband, our two boys and I spent an amazing week at this very lovely flat in late July. I simply cannot say enough how much we enjoyed our stay. The location was ideal for us literally minutes away from public transit, excellent restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, groceries and the neighborhood has such a wonderful urban vibe, which is exactly what we were looking for. The flat is impeccably styled, beautifully appointed and obviously well taken care of (can I just say, I want Gary to come to Minnesota and decorate my house! ;-) When you look at the photos and read the description, please know that what you see is EXACTLY what youll get. Theres no trick photography here; this place is just as lovely in real life. Gary was a most gracious host; we really appreciated the detailed information packet and the computer available for our use was a very thoughtful touch, as it allowed us to research, in depth and onsite, the activities wed planned for our stay. Thank you, Gary, for your hospitality we dearly hope to return to London, and to Gibson Square, some day in the not-too-distant future. 13 September 2011 - 16:29:31

Islington is a new area of London for us. We were accompanied by another couple our age who had never visited there. We were able to walk and use the Tube at Angel as well as cabs and Uber. We explored Regent Canal and at least five area restaurants recommended by the owners. We also made many excursions into Central London and took two longer trips to Stonehenge, Bath, Canterbury, Leeds Castle and Dover. We relaxed in the lovely garden out back when we needed to recharge. The home has convenient laundry facilities and a well equipped kitchen. It also has wifi and computer access and many other amenities. We were so busy we never turned the TV on once, but there are two of them! The owners left detailed instructions that helped us a great deal. Whenever we had a question we just emailed and the answer came right away, a really pleasant experience for all of us. Sleeping accommodations were great and quiet. There is plenty of closet space for clothing and more than adequate linens. Many thanks for a unique living experience. So much nicer than hotel rooms. 08 September 2017 - 21:03:00

We really enjoyed the lovely appartment and garden, in a tranquil street but with the foodies-heaven of Islington's Upperstreet just around the corner and only a short walk to the underground - we know where we will stay our next time in London! 01 May 2017 - 08:28:00

I returned to my London home, as I like to call it, for the second time and sincerely hope that it won't be the last. Certainly a stay in Gary & Bill's apartment is not only about the stylish and comfortable setting. It is a lot more than that. The prompt responses, the real care and understanding of my needs are greatly appreciated. Admittedly I have not had many other stays in privately owned properties in London but now I prefer it to staying in a fancy hotel, especially for 2 weeks or longer. I could not recommend this beautiful apartment any more but I am a bit 'selfish' and and would always like the opportunity to return. Eva Sydney. Australia 03 November 2016 - 10:39:00

Flat is beautifully decorated, outfitted, and location is all we could ask for in London. We were surrounded with more outstanding restaurants than we could possibly visit over three weeks. And transportation is readily available for nearly all spots we wanted visit. This flat is outfitted with luxury amenities only available in an owner's primary residence. My wife and I could not have been more satisfied in our home, if just for a three week moment, in London. 28 September 2016 - 15:27:00
