We came to New York for my dad's 70 year old birthday, and finding this place on the subway line, and so close to the beach and the nature reserves was wonderful. Dining out while looking at Manhattan skyline and sleeping with the smell of the sea and the noise of the birds was really fantastic... A great complement to the city tour. 28 August 2008 - 13:13:26

We had an amazing time. Could not have picked a better place. It was cozy, and felt like home, yet was close to the hustle and bustle of NYC. If I went to NY again, I would only go there. The owner is a gentleman and was very helpful in every possible way he could. I would reccomend this place to anyone. We had a successful wedding because of the house. :) You will definetely see us again in the near future. 29 August 2008 - 12:55:32

We stayed at Michaels other property on the other side of the island which is a bit bigger and has fantastic views over the lagoon towards Manhattan ( visible on a clear day with great sunsets) Broad Channel is a fascinating place, with an excellent nature reserve in walking distance; we found it very difficult to think it was so close to Manhattan. Transport up town is very cheap and quite frequent. The station is about 15 minutes from the house. We used public transport to get into town on most days but hired a car in the second week to explore further afield in nearby long island. There are a few local shops at the end of the street selling most things needed for everyday together with a restaurant and a bar.The house is well equipped and very comfortable although a PC and internet connection would be very appreciated. Michael made us feel very much at home and we'd like to come back sometime 02 September 2008 - 19:41:35

When we decided to go to New York last year we wanted to experience all the sites, sounds, and smells of the city, but stay somewhere quiet and relaxing. So we opted to stay out of the centre. We could not have asked for a more beautiful location than this!! Views of the Manhatten Skyline day and night, excellent access to the subway(5-10mins walk) and you are in the centre of New York in 40mins. Hotels are great for the facilities, but self catering accomodation like this really lets you get up close and personal with the people of New York. Local stores are handy for snacks and drinks, and further down to Rockaway, there are restaurants and bars. Or you can eat in town before returning in the evening, which we did most nights. There is quite a choice. The house was immaculate, the hospitality and help first class, and the opportunity to start your New York adventure that should not be overlooked. Thank you for a wonderful time, i hope we have the opportunity to return. 16 January 2009 - 12:12:56

We booked both of Michael's houses in Shadcreek road to accommodate our friends and family for our wedding in New York. It suited us to a tee. The location out of the city was great to return to and relax after a long day. The view amazed us every morning we woke. The local store and takeaway pizza is two minute walk away meaning we could get everything we need for breakfast. We didn't want to leave. We'll be back! Michael was a great help. Thanks. 03 February 2010 - 21:57:57

We stayed 7/22-7/25 while attending my nephew's wedding. The house was described accurately and was clean and well maintained.. The view of Manhattan was especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset. One night we even witnessed a display of God's lightening "fireworks" and later real fireworks in the distance (someone said it was Coney Island). The house was extremely convenient for our needs concerning the activities of a wedding weekend. Each of our guests had their favorite activity from bird watching, plane watching, sunbathing on the deck, to sleeping with the soothing sounds of the bay lulling them to sleep. Although I do not plan to return to the hustle of the city, I highly recommend this property. It is a great place to stay and you will find Michael a pleasure to rent form. 27 July 2010 - 11:43:34

Ideal spot for a long weekend away from the grind in Manhattan. Watching the sunset from the terrace outside the master bedroom on the 2nd floor; riding bikes over the bridge to the beach at Riis Park; birdwatching in the Jamaica Bay Reserve; falling asleep in cool, fresh air (no air-conditioning needed, even on the hottest days, with the cross-breezes coming through at all angles). 14 September 2010 - 15:54:09

We had a week in New York at the beginning of November. Myself, my husband and our 6 children aged 8 to 17 were delighted to be staying in Michael's house. It was spacious yet cosy, warm and well equipped with fantastic views, atmosphere and a very interesting, friendly neighbourhood. The daily trip into Manhattan was fun and different each time and there was always something going on to interest the children Michael was extremely helful and I would warmly recommend his property. We hope to return there ourselves one day, but in the summer to enjoy his terrace! 03 December 2010 - 13:46:16

In NY for a college graduation, our family stayed 5 days at this lovely getaway. A perfect respite from The City, yet minutes away by subway; our experience could not have been better! Michael is a great host, lives nearby and is available if needed. Broad Channel is very reminiscent of little villages in England, very charming and seemingly untouched by the crazy era in which we now live. Some excellent restaurants in nearby Howard Beach made evenings leisurely and enjoyable. Hope we have an opportunity to return! 18 May 2011 - 18:01:52

We had a very nice family reunion time in Michael's house. It is easily to accommodate 8 of us. The beds, the bathrooms and the kitchen are all in good conditions! I like the 3 bathrooms esp. for different families. The view from the deck is beautiful even in winter! The house seems far from the city, but after Michael showed us a convenient way, the distance never bothered us. We went to the city everyday and enjoyed dinner at the house together every night. Michael is a very good host, he answered all my questions quickly before we came to the house and gave us privacy when we were there. If we come to NYC again, we will definitely stay here! 18 February 2015 - 18:06:44

We rented this beautiful home for the long Thanksgiving weekend and we had the most wonderful time. The house is large and it easily accommodated our sons' families and ourselves. The kitchen is so well equipped that we had no trouble cooking a large Thanksgiving feast. The view is breathtaking, there is easy access to the Metro, and Rockaway Beach is just a short drive over the bridge. I can only imagine how incredible this would be in the summertime. Michael took care of everything. Just pack a suitcase and you're set. I would definitely rent this home again. 27 February 2015 - 17:13:19

Our stay in Broad Channel was very enjoyable. Our family which includes my husband and I and 3 of our kids, ages 11, 14 and 17 fit very comfortably in this home. We enjoyed the outdoors while bird watching, fishing and catching crabs. We were able to walk a few short blocks to the train to avoid taking out car into the city. The house was very clean and had everything we needed including a grocery store within walking distance. I highly recommend renting from Michael. 20 April 2015 - 17:58:18

Open communication. House is well kept. Beautiful scenery/view. Absolutely felt like the house was mine for the week that I had it. Plenty of space. I would definitely rent again. Spacious too. 20 April 2015 - 21:43:29

We had a great time staying at the house for a week. The views were amazing. We had 7 people staying there and there was plenty of room for everyone. And the walk to the train station was very short which made going to the city easy. We enjoyed visiting the Deli at the end of the street. Mike was nice enough to take us for a boat ride and even though we got stuck for a few minutes it was an adventure and we enjoyed the ride. We were able to do a little fishing and even caught some crabs. We were there for my son's graduation from USMMA and the ride to the school was not bad at all. I would recommend this house to everyone it is wonderful. If the opportunity arises we will definitely be back. The only drawback was that the week went by to quickly. 29 June 2015 - 18:34:34

This vacation was everything we wanted and more! Michael was an amazing host. After a long day of sightseeing and being in the madness of the city, coming home to this beautiful home away from everything made the trip that more enjoyable. 45 min ride away from the city by train. We are 100% sure that we will be staying at this location again with the whole family. Thank you Michael for this wonderful rental! 29 December 2015 - 21:55:21

To stay in this house was a very good decision as we could combine city tours in NYC (easy access to metro going straight downtown) and still come back after an exhausting day to a peaceful home. The view from the bedrooms is incredible and good weather allows you to enjoy the skyline of NYC sitting on the balcony. There is a park not to far away where one can go for a walk or a run. The owner provided very good customer service. It was mostly clean in the house and there were all things necessary for cooking available. Conclusively, it met our expectations and we enjoy to come back one time. We would definitely recommend this property. 05 May 2016 - 11:31:42

We were a group of three adults and five kids ages 12 and 13 years old from DC and Boston, meeting in the middle. This was the perfect house for us. There were enough bathrooms (one on each of the three floors) and enough space to stretch out. Broad Channel is a small, quiet place that looks like a fishing village. The kids went out on the deck, dock, and walked around town. They went to the nearby school yard, bought a pizza at a shop nearby, got to know a cat who was wandering around, and found "treasures" on the curbs as they walked through town. It is a world away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan. The view from the deck was beautiful, and there was a big table and chairs out there where we could eat and admire the view. There was no problem with airport noise when we were there. The beds were comfortable. There was parking right beside the house. When we went into Manhattan, we used the subway. It was raining that day, so we drove to the subway stop and easily found a parking spot there. It's a short drive to Rockaway Beach. Michael and his family were very responsive and accommodating. If you want to visit the city and get away from it, too, stay here. We would stay here again. 11 October 2016 - 15:09:35

First the good bits: The house is in an excellent location right on the water and with a fantastic view of the city landscape, especially at night. Its a 10-15 minute walk to the subway and a 45-50 minute ride into the city. Although Broad channel subway station was described early this year as the most crime ridden on the network, we saw nothing that concerned us and there was Police at the station every time we went walking around. The kitchen was well equipped with most things that you would need to have basic meals. The bad bits; None of the windows would lock which was a little unnerving and could just be slid up from outside. We made sure we left nothing of value in the house. The furniture is all mismatched and looks like its from charity shops or the Salvation Army. Its the sort of furniture even your grandma would throw out! The double beds were very poor with large sags in the middle causing severe roll together. The bedroom smelt strange on the 2rd floor and we found a full bottle of beer under the mattress that had started leaking and smelt like it was fermenting! The sheets were grotty with stains and the towels were no better. Some had bleach marks on whilst others were very old and frayed. We purchased some new sheets as we didn't feel comfortable using the ones that were there. The floor downstairs would turn a clean pair of socks dirty very quickly so we kept our shoes on all the time. In general the whole place felt like it needed a really good clean. Another review I read after we'd booked had described the house as shabby chic, but without the chic and I totally agree. Strangely the rest of the reviews appeared good but were dated a while ago. Mike the owner was on holiday for the majority of our stay so I did not have contact with him. I cant recommend this house and in its current state we would not consider returning even if there was no cost involved. 30 December 2015 - 20:12:50
