About listing

The great thing about this superb apartment is its location. Built in 1774, it is adjacent to the buzz of one of London’s “destination streets” (Upper Street), one minute from the underground (Victoria line), and on Highbury Fields, which London's colourful mayor, Boris Johnson calls 'the jewel of our borough, positively bursting with artistic and cultural delights' and where he plans to make good his new year's resolution to lose a stone. The apartment's proximity to the underground and its excellent connections, makes it the perfect place to come home to. Part of an historic Grade II listed terraced house, it has recently (February 2010) been completely re-decorated, and is modernised to a high standard. Our guests frequently comment on its attractive “feel” and many make return visits. We are very happy to arrange a taxi from the airport if required. Please note this is a non-smoking apartment. The property consists of:: One double bedroom and one twin bedroom, both with 100 percent cotton sheets and wool blankets; living room with colour tv, freeview digital channels, DVD player, VHS, hi fi, sofa and sofa bed with duvet (sleeps two); modern kitchen fully equipped with washing machine, fridge, freezer, dishwasher, electric cooker and gas hob, extractor hood, microwave, coffee machine and toaster, bathroom with separate shower.

This is our second time staying at the Highbury flat. We love this flat. It is ideally located , very near the tube and shops and restaurants. Nigel is a very attentive host and is very helpful. We hope to return again. 19 July 2017 - 07:10:00

This flat is almost within sight of the Highbury-Islington station. The Victoria line is fast and goes to a lot of good locations. We really liked how convenient it was to get into and around town. If you're from outside the UK, look into getting a Visitor Oyster card before you arrive. There are two small markets within sight of the station (Tesco & Waitrose) and another very close by (Sainsbury), so food shopping is super easy. You can shop one day at a time without having to carry food super far. There are definitely a lot of steps, so this is probably a good thing. If you need gluten free options, this is a great part of London. There are multiple gluten free bakeries (Beyond Bread and Artisan Gluten Free) a short walk down the street and a nice restaurant (Niche) not too far away in Angel. The Tesco had lots of GF options and they are good about explicit labeling. They had refrigerated GF Pizza Express personal pizza in stock for part of our stay. There's also a Pizza Express in Angel. Finally, the hosts are incredibly gracious. They were very helpful and super nice. 12 August 2017 - 19:15:00

We are a family of six, with four young boys. Absolutely loved 2 Highbury. With the park and metro station within 100 meters it was super convenient. The restaurants and grocery storre are also just around the corner, less than 5 mins walk. Sally and Nigel were so pleasant and accommodating. Great experience. Thank you. 20 August 2017 - 12:53:00

The owners were wonderful. Kind and generous with information about the area. The flat is very popular and has been consistently booked for many years. It mght be time now now for a minor brush up. We wouldnt have chosen the flat for a two week stay if we had known that there was no working freezer space for frozen vegetables, or a working dryer for our washed clothes. We expect some noise when we stay in a large, vibrant city. Islington has superb public transportation with overground, as well as underground trains. Be aware, however, that the trains run late at night and the rails are very close to the flat. We were aware of the comments made about the steep and narrow last section of stairs. We adjusted by bringing very small suitcases to make our lives easier. Having minimal clothing with us shouldnt have been a problem as there was supposed to be a working dryer for our clothes. 17 October 2017 - 10:28:00

06 July 2017 - 06:53:00

Hi, We recently spent a week in this apartment and had a wonderful time. Yes, it is up a few flights of stairs and yes there is some street noise (like anywhere in a major city) but it was a perfect fit for us (2 adults, 3 older kids), very clean and as good a location in London as you would want. The tube stop is across the street (Victoria line), fantastic bus service and 2 other tube lines within a 5 minute bus ride. After many long days sightseeing in London it was great to walk out of the tube stop and be settled into the apartment in about 1 minute. Upper Street with all of its shops and cafes is right out the door and the park across the street is shady and calm. Sally and Nigel were very helpful. There were fresh flowers and a bottle of wine provided and we had no problem staying late our last day. The kitchen was well stocked (though small but probably typical for a 200 year old building). The bedroom situation worked out well. There are 2 twins in one room and a double in another with a sleeper sofa in the living room. We would stay there again without a doubt. However, if you have trouble with stairs then this would not be a good place. -Jeff 03 July 2008 - 12:48:58

We spent a week at the flat in Highbury place in London. On behalf of my family, I would like to thank the owners of the flat, for the very enjoyable stay we had at the flat. We really felt at home away from home from all aspects. The actual layout of the flat and all the appliances, exactly as in the web site, the bottle of wine, the games for the kids, the first aid kit (which came into use), the electrical socket adapters, the book & maps about London, the local shopping guide we found in the flat booklet, etc. All in all the attention to the small details really made our stay very enjoyable in London. We will recommend to family & friends to rent the flat next time they are in London. Again, thank you very much ! 04 July 2008 - 10:06:53

We have stayed in this flat for several years. The beds are heavenly to sleep on, the linens for bed and bath are of excellent quality. We think it is fabulous that the shower is separate from the bath. We have entertained up to 16 people in this apartment out of this kitchen. Nigel and Sally have lent us extra plates, silverware, glassware etc. Their phone service is also a very generous offer. The apartment is always immaculate when we arrive, flowers and wine always offered. We have used the washing machine at least once or twice every day and never had a problem. I have never been in an apartment anywhere in Europe, where screens were furnished...that's an American Thang. And yes, there are stairs, but just think what great excercise you get so you can have another pastry from Ottolenghis's. If you choose to rent an apartment in the heart of a major city, there will be noise, people do drink, and yes people have barking dogs. But it has always been very quiet at this address. It sounds like the person who was unhappy would be better off at a theme park. 05 July 2008 - 21:43:16

As advertised, the best feature of this property is the location - the park, the tube, shops, pubs, restaurants, and grocery stores. Overall the beds were about average. The queen bed and sofa bed a little less than average comfort by US travel standards. Bath was clean and updated, and the kitchen was functional and clean. We used the washer heavily having traveled with 4 teens for two weeks - it worked great albeit a bit slow, The carpets were very worn up the stairs to the entry as well as in the rooms. The sofas could use some cleaning as well. Our hosts were very warm and welcoming and wonderfully responsive. The stairs were a bit of a hike but no big deal unless you were elderly or had small children and lots of big bags. TV in family room was nice but bedroom had some reception challenges but we didn't come here to watch TV so no big deal. Overall good value despite some needed improvements given prices for hotels that can accomodate 6 people. 04 July 2008 - 19:12:32

We, (myself my wife and three children aged 6, 6 (twins) and 9) recently returned home after spending an absolutely fantastic week in London, staying at this flat. The location was perfect, for tube, buses, shopping, dining etc. The property was immaculate and very well maintained, every need was catered for, all the appliances where working perfectly. We found the beds to be very comfortable and had no trouble sleeping. There was no problem with excessive noise. The kids used the swimming pool and park across the road daily. I would like to thank Sally and Nigel for helping to make our stay so enjoyable. Thankyou. 11 July 2008 - 11:42:30

There cant be many flats to rent that enable you to enjoy an early morning swim after a 2 minutes walk and jump on a tube, after a 2minute walk in another direction. The location is fabulous and the small shops in Highbury (8 minutes) are well worth the short walk We have used this flat when I have been working in London and I have used the kitchen for recipe testing, it is well equipped. I was amazed to find a supply of freezer blocks (useful for my work but also for picnics) in the freezer. Sally and Nigel are very hospitable from the welcoming bottle of wine, expensive butter and delicious bread on arrival, to their generosity over parking tickets and internet access. Our only complaint is that we rarely want to leave. 12 August 2008 - 15:43:47

We stayed in this top floor apartment on Highbury Fields for one week in May 2009. Our experience was great - the apartment was clean, well appointed, and just a few steps from the Highbury & Islington station on the Victoria Line (one stop from King's Cross, about 15-20 minutes from Victoria Station). Several markets are within walking distance, so it was easy to stock up on necessities. We didn't make much use of the kitchen for cooking (so many good restaurants around...), but it was clean, well stocked, and large enough to cook for a family. The beds were maybe just a bit harder than we're used to, but some might find that to be a good thing. Regardless, we had no trouble sleeping comfortably. As others have mentioned, the stairs leading to the apartment are narrow and steep, so if you have mobility concerns, this might be something to consider. I have to say that communication was excellent. Though Sally and Nigel were at their other property in Edinburgh when we checked in, we did run into Sally later in the week. She was very bright and pleasant, and we would have been very comfortable contacting her if we needed anything (as it turns out, everything was already well taken care of and we had no reason to contact Sally or Nigel). We dealt mostly with Warren. Warren was highly professional and always answered emails promptly. We had arranged with Warren to check in early (our flight was supposed to arrive at 7:00), but after boarding the plane, we were delayed on the tarmac for nearly six hours. With no way of contacting Warren, we were a little concerned that no one would be there to check us in. When we arrived, we found that Warren had already checked on our flight and was ready and waiting for us right on time. Thanks for a great stay! 02 June 2009 - 23:37:06

Considering central London standards this apartment offers good space for 4 people. It was clean and everything was functional and convenient. The owner was very nice. This provided an instant feelgood factor. The location is great. Islington itself is a vibrant part of town with many restaurants and shops. Its residential areas are also good for walks. Highbury&Islington station (Victoria line and London Overground) is across the road. A few insider tips (we used to live in the area for over six years): - La Porchetta on Upper Street: great value for money and good fun. You can see the action on Upper Street through the large windows while you work on what must be the largest pizzas in the world. - The Sunday farmers market (behind Town Hall, signposted on Upper Street): nice atmosphere and losts of organic shopping to be done for a nice meal or a quick bite: - Chilling out on Highbury fields: it lies in front of you when you come out of the front door. Walk up to the Oasis Cafe for a cup of tea. - Take a walk along the New River and look at one of the most beautiful streets in the world: Alwyne Road. - Flashback on the Essex Road for second hand CDs. - Sitting on the Islington Green and looking around. - The Screen on the Green cinema: on of the best in London. - The Hope and Anchor on Upper Street for live music. - Hop on the Overground and ride out to wonderful wonderful Richmond. 23 September 2009 - 19:06:24

On our arrival from Australia after 20 hours of travel we were met by Nigel before we even had a chance to knock on the door. Nigel was very welcoming and enthusiastic in showing us the 'ins and outs' of the apartment. Our first impression of the apartment was that this would be a fantastic base for our week in London (the Underground was literally 2 minutes away). It met all of our expectations - even the stairs, which we initially had reservations about, were never a problem and became less daunting with each passing day! Also Warren was very helpful with our booking of this apartment and the arranging of our pickup from the airport. It is very easy to recommend 'Highbury Fields' to anyone who wishes to visit London. Thankyou Nigel and Sally for making our stay memorable. 09 October 2010 - 14:17:35

The flat was spacious, well equipped and spotless. Very excellent location and quiet. The landlord/hosts were exceptionally friendly and very nice. The only reasonable gripe was that the flat was at the top of the building and there is no lift, so quite a climb and quite steep at that. That notwithstanding, I would thoroughly recommend the property and would certainly consider staying there again. 07 June 2011 - 20:34:36

We recently had a fantastic stay at this property. The listing description was accurate with helpful pictures, but we felt the actual property was even better. It was clean and very well-maintained, with everything we needed for our stay with us as parents and our two sons, ages 18 and 21. We had plenty of room to have some privacy, but also plenty of opportunity for family time as well. Our sons loved their bedroom with the two single beds and unique cupboard. Warren was very helpful in arranging our stay and responded to emails very quickly. Upon our early morning arrival, we were able to drop off our luggage and spend some time getting to know the area and having a nice meal before again meeting the owners, Sally and Nigel. They were very warm and pleasant and took time to not only show us the things we needed to know about the flat, but also to give us some information about the Islington area. We were happy to have them available if we needed assistance, but we had no need to contact them for anything. The location, just a few steps from an Underground station and plentiful bus stops, allowed us to be anywhere in London in a short time, and we were also able to take some day trips to other England destinations. We were so close to Kings Cross/St Pancras that we considered a day trip to Paris, although we decided to keep our focus on Great Britain. There are excellent restaurants in the area, and we would particularly recommend LaPasta for an excellent meal and Euphorium for great scones and pastries. There is also good shopping further along Upper Street. Some shops are expensive, but we found many to be quite reasonable. Having the park directly across the street was very pleasant for both the view from the flat as well as quiet evening walks, and we all referred to returning to the flat as "going home" in the evenings. We would highly recommend this flat to anyone who doesn't mind just a few stairs. Those steps are just part of the very excellent walking to be done throughout London. The historic aspect of the flat related well to that of Britain and is part of the overall character and personality that we desired. We loved our stay and very much hope to return at some point. 04 July 2011 - 23:44:50

We enjoyed our stay at this clean, light and well-equipped apartment, conveniently located two minutes from the Islington & Highbury tube station (which is just one stop from King's Cross St. Pancras). The place is as represented in the photos. I arrived before my family and Nigel was very kind in carrying my luggage up the stairs. Some reviewers complained about the staircase. We didn't have an issue. The spirally narrow part was only just about 10 steps or so. One little suggestion - a little shelf in the shower stall for shampoo and soap would be very helpful. 15 September 2015 - 16:36:49

We had a wonderful experience at this fun flat in the Islington neighborhood. Our children loved the twin beds in their room and we loved the charm of the apartment, which included pretty (non-working) fireplaces in the rooms and a cute but very functional kitchen. The building is historical -- very cool "Old London" looking and it overlooks a park on one side and the (surprisingly quiet) Overground train track on the other. You're very close to the train station and bus lines, plus lots of great restaurants, coffee shops and pubs. We're city people so the city noise was "normal" for us but might bother someone unused to that. We loved the top floor views, but should note that there are lots of steep steps up, which would be difficult for people with babies or injuries. Also of note: Laundry in the apartment, including a brand new clothes dryer! Very handy and nice. 02 January 2018 - 19:55:00
