About listing

Gostelow House, circa 1540, is a Grade II listed building surrounded by ¾ acre of secure gardens. There is an outdoor pool, bar, patio area and barbecues for your use. This family house is of half timbered Tudor design, and whilst it retains its character with inglenook fireplaces and low ceilings and beams it has all the modern touches you would expect. The house is situated in the small village of Chalton which has a farm selling fresh free range eggs. There is a good dining pub a few steps from the house. The larger village of Toddington is 2 miles away and has a historic church, a library, a number of village shops, various takeaways and four pubs. Leagrave, a suburb of Luton is 3 miles away with fast access to London (45 min) and Bedford (20 min). Milton Keynes 15 miles to the north, offers a wealth of shopping and entertainment. Oxford and Cambridge are an hour's drive away.

Really impressed from start to finish. The owner was a pleasure to deal with, and everything was clear and well-organised. She helped us navigate the options for local activities too. The place itself is stunning. Nicely decorated, but with ample capacity for our 14 guests, space in the garden (including BBQ and somewhat chilly pool) and a field for activities out the back. The pub next door also very nice, if a little slow on service. Not too far from MK for other activities too, and easily accessible from London. All together, a really excellent weekend. 03 May 2014 - 15:13:11

Beautiful large house that is well equipped inside and out, and bursting with character. We were blessed with good weather and made full use of the wonderful spacious garden, where we enjoyed a whole evening of barbecuing, propping up the bar and playing the outdoor games provided. The location was great - surrounded by countryside yet very easy to get to with the majority of our group travelling by rail and car from London. We were in good proximity to all of our local activities as well. I want to give a special thank you to the friendly owner who went out of her way to help us through the organising stage, guiding us through the travel and activity options and ensuring that our weekend went as smoothly as possible. The kind welcome gift was the icing on the cake. Overall I thoroughly and heartily recommend this property. 09 July 2014 - 12:12:45

I hired this beautiful house for my 30th Birthday, there were 13 adults in our party and this property suited us perfectly. The garden was immaculate and the outtdoor ammenties were fantastic, we would stay again! 04 August 2014 - 14:10:45

Had a great weekend, the house and gardens are fantastic for a group weekend away! The well BBQ was a particular highlight! Also, the owners are very helpful and quick to reply to any queries. Thanks for a great weekend! 30 March 2015 - 12:41:09

The house and gardens are really beautiful as is the Pool. Lots of facilities, such as a bar and fridge in the garden, garden games, gas BBQ and another large BBQ in a well. Carole was very helpful answering all of our queries and returned the deposit within a couple of days. 10 July 2015 - 11:31:18

I hired this cottage for a civilised hen-party weekend for 14 girls and we had a fantastic time. The cottage was perfect in size to sleep everyone and the dining space both indoors and outdoors was ample for such a big group. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need to be self-catered and the added facilities outside of the fridge space, bar and BBQs are a great addition. The location is fantastic, only 10 minutes drive from Leagrave station and set back from the road in a very quiet village with lovely surroundings for country walks. Carole was fantastic at responding to all our questions before we arrived and ensured we had a great weekend. She returned our deposit in full very promptly after our stay. I would highly recommend Gostelow House to anyone considering staying here! 03 August 2015 - 11:08:07

Carole was incredibly helpful in the booking period, prompt in replying to emails, and answered all of my many questions over the space of few months. She was flexible with our arrival time and left the keys for us as she wasn't able to be there. The house was clean and tidy with 2 bottles of champagne waiting to greet us! We slept 13 girls comfortably including the sofa bed in the living room and a fold out bed in the study. Lots of bedding and towels to spare. We prepared a dinner and all fit around the dining room table. Would be lovely in the summer to make the most of the garden and pool. Returned the full deposit the day after we checked out. Thank you again for a great stay! 23 April 2016 - 16:57:56

This is a great house in stunning grounds and the owner couldn't be more helpful while you are preparing for your stay. It is her home so storage is limited but I think that adds to the house's charm. Highly recommended. 11 May 2016 - 12:05:24

I have recently come back from organising a hen do here and we had a great stay. The house is very old and charming and the grounds are beautiful and there's a pool!!! The weekend we stayed the weather was roasting so the pool was great to have. There were 13 of us and there was plenty of space and the weekend was really comfortable. Carole was great and answered all my questions and provided lots of useful information. Carole even left 2 bottles of champagne for us which was very generous. I would definitely recommend this house for anyone wanting a break in the country or for hen party's. 24 July 2016 - 20:21:11

We were a group of 14 who came to enjoy a relaxed hen party last weekend! Gostelow house is absolutely beautiful - we were fortunate enough to enjoy excellent weather so were able to make use of the stunning gardens, pool and outdoor bar. I would come back for the garden alone (if only Carole could guarantee the weather!) as it was perfect for our 'mini festival' in the back garden. The house itself was lovely - its definitely important to bear in mind that this is actually someones home - so it's slightly different to renting a holiday home/apartment - however this doesn't affect the enjoyment, if anything it makes you feel even more at home. Carole was fantastic throughout the booking and organising process - she couldn't have been more helpful and efficient with returning deposits etc. And the two bottles of champagne left in the fridge for us were gratefully received! All in all a wonderful time was had by all - we are planning an excuse (any excuse will do) to come back again! 12 August 2016 - 16:14:26

Spent the weekend here with a group of friends to celebrate a thirty-somethingth birthday. The house is really charming, the garden is beautiful. Plenty of room for 12 people. We made great use of the barbecue, swimming pool and croquet set. Carole was really helpful throughout. Clear communication, accomodated all our whims, returned the deposit in full and left us a couple of champagne as a welcome gift. Much appreciated! Would definitely recommend staying here. We're looking for an excuse to come visit again! 14 June 2017 - 20:49:00

We spent last weekend at Gostelow House (Aug 17) and had an amazing time. We travelled as a group of 14 for a very relaxed hen weekend and our party included 3 small babies. The house is definitely unique and the garden is beautiful. It is a home rather than a holiday rental and this is worth noting as there are personal belongings in everywhere in the house. Carole, the owner, is very helpful and friendly. She provided us with lots of information beforehand and answered all the questions I had. She very generously provided us with champagne and allowed us to use her extensive kitchenware during our visit. We unfortunately had an accident whilst there involving one of her lovely plate decorations and she was very understanding about it. She was also kind enough to organise meeting in London to return some items that had been left behind. During our stay, we had a BBQ, made a 3 course homecooked meal and played games. We ventured out to Bedford one afternoon for tea (about half an hour away). I'd recommend this property to anyone hoping to a have a getaway somewhere a little bit different. 19 August 2017 - 23:12:00

We rented the house for a quiet country hen weekend for 14 friends. The owner was more than helpful in making the weekend special for us all. Before and during our stay, she went above and beyond the call of duty to help us plan the weekend (for example, she took a delivery of a large number of flowers for us and arranged them around the house). She even left us a couple of bottles of champagne in the fridge. It's very easy to find the property if you follow the directions given. The house is clean, with sheets and towels provided for all guests. The house has lovely gardens, which were great to sit in and enjoy a leisurely cup of tea. There is a pub next door (which you can't see or hear from the house) where we went for a hearty Sunday lunch and there are good walks around the local area. The well-stocked kitchen and good-sized reception and dining room, make this place ideally suited to large parties. I would wholeheartedly recommend this place. 11 June 2008 - 10:32:39

I found that this was a fantastic place to go for a weekend break. It is about an hour from north London and really easy to find. The house itself is really pretty - it is refreshing to find 5 double bedrooms rather than having to mess about with single beds and each bedroom is of a good size and very comfortable. The dining table indoors seats ten and you could probably get about four more around there. The garden is fantastic - very large, with a pool, a patio area with dining table and chairs and there are two barbeques. The outside bar and music system are a good touch too. The property is nicely kept and very comfortable, and the owners provide very good customer service. 01 July 2008 - 08:33:58

I booked Gostelow House for a weekend for my sister's hendo. It's in a really good location as it is close to Milton keynes and there are a lot of sightseeing hotspots in the area. The house was really lovely, with plenty of room to house the 14 of us. We were made to feel very welcome, with the owner of the house even leaving a couple of bottles of champagne in the fridge as a gift for the bride-to-be! The huge garden with outside bar area and BBQ was the perfect venue for BBQ and games and some of the more crazy hens even managed to brave the pool! The garden felt very secluded, as there is a pub on one side and the village hall on the other, so we were able to make as much noise as we liked! Overall, a fantastic weekend was had by all so thanks to the owners for making it possible! I would definitley recommend this cottage and hope to visit again in the future. 15 July 2008 - 09:44:03

We had a brilliant time at Gostelow House. The owner was very helpful from beginning to end; communicating regularly and giving clear instructions. She also went above the call of duty taking delivery of a food order and unpacking it before we arrived! The property is a lovely house with original features, really magical. The garden is fantastic. The heat wave meant we spent most of our time out on the spacious patio, listening to music blasting from the bar and taking regular dips in the pool. With 14 people staying it was fine space wise. I'm not sure how it would have worked out on a cold or wet weekend when we'd all have been inside but it's certainly spacious for a smaller group. Some rooms are cluttered but the owner cleared fridge, cupboard and wardrobe space for our things and we managed to cater for everyone, for three meals a day with no problems. I would definitely recommend this property to my friends and family if they were planning a weekend for a big group of people. It is convenient from several directions, a car is useful but Leagrave station is just a few minutes away. 14 July 2009 - 23:13:48
  17. Trying to find the ideal place to stay when organising a university reunion for 12 adults and 4 chldren under 4, all whilst living in America is not easy. However the owners of Gostelow House managed to make it as pain free as it could be. A perfect house in a perfect location (both in terms with being just off the M1 and right next to a pub!) but with the added bonus of quite literally being their home so you want for nothing. All our needs were met and we really enjoyed a sunny, stress free weekend in a house that exudes character. I would recommend it to anyone. 19 April 2010 - 12:03:52

We had a perfect weekend at Gostelow House. After scouring the country I stumbled upon this gem of a place for our boys weekend. It was a perfect weekend of sun, beer, bbq's and relaxation. There is even a pub next door! The house was great, plenty of room for all 12 of us and was in a great location for all of us coming from London. I can highly recommend Gostelow House and the owner who was incredibly helpful and friendly. We all hope to return sometime soon! 16 July 2010 - 09:03:34

Gostelow House was a great place for our stag do. There was plenty of room for all 14 of us - whether that be outdoors in the garden around the barbecue, or relaxing in the dining room or lounge. Carole went out of her way to ensure we had the perfect stay, even leaving us two bottle of champagne for our arrival. She also helped with advice on local taxi firms, pubs and activities. The Star pub next door serves up decent food, is very welcoming and is literally 50 yards away. The local village of Toddington (less than 2 miles away) can be highly recommended for a night out - the curry house is worth a visit as are the 7 pubs (at least half of which were playing live music when we were there on a saturday night). Would highly recommend for a weekend away, very easy to get to from London as well. 11 April 2011 - 12:56:09

Ten of us stayed in Gostelow house for the weekend to celebrate my husband's 30th Birthday. The weather was incredible, so we were really able to make the most of the beautiful and well-manicured outdoor space in the garden and of course the outdoor games (though not quite warm enough for the pool or BBQ). Top marks go to the owner, who couldn't have been more accommodating .... as the reviews mention, she was very responsive to our questions and weird requests, she kindly left some celebratory champagne and a personalised message, took delivery of our online shopping and returned our deposit in double quick time. The decor is rustic and comfy (rather than modern). There is a hugely well-equipped kitchen. The house is so unbelievably quaint with wonky floors and wood beams. There was plenty of space for 10 adults, but the dining and sitting rooms may have struggled to comfortably accommodate many more grown ups. If you're after proximity to a pub (but far enough not to be noisy) then you can't go far wrong here! We had a most enjoyable and hearty meal there on the Friday. All in all, a memorable weekend in a fantastic location. Many thanks! 13 April 2011 - 21:02:28
