This little gem is nestled in a quiet neighborhood and surrounded in beautiful foliage. The interior is nicely appointed and feels very roomy. The owner is a delight and very helpful. We will go back any time we are in the area. Arlene 12 June 2017 - 19:59:00

We had a wonderful stay at the cottage. The location, very close to Solano Ave. and easily accessible to all Berkeley has to offer, is perfect. We were a little concerned about the lack of air conditioning but with windows open, the 60 degree nights were perfect for sleeping. Would definitely return!! 18 June 2017 - 14:30:00

I was so pleased with this absolutely charming garden cottage in N. Berkeley. It was pristine, comfortable and set up so brilliantly. It had everything I needed and was easy to find, and in a great location. It was quiet and peaceful and surrounded by lush landscaping. The owner could not have been nicer and more accommodating. I hope to be able to stay here sometime soon. 27 June 2017 - 05:21:00

Joan's cottage is somewhat small but cozy and convenient to both sides of the San Francisco bay. It's in a nice neighborhood, and Joan is both helpful and respectful of your privacy. There is a plethora of things to do within driving distance. The cottage seems like a converted garage, but it is clean, comfortable and newly done. We enjoyed our stay and would likely return. My only negative feedback was the queen sized bed was so-so at best for comfort level, but the pillows (only two of them) were flatter than a pancake. We like a lot of pillows when we sleep, so we actually went to Target down the road and bought a few fluffier ones. An upgrade to the mattress and addition of more pillows for the pillow sleepers would easily bump the review to a 5 star. 17 July 2017 - 19:34:00

3rd time visitor, it just keeps getting better. My "go to" rental in the Bay Area, this is a relaxed but completely equipped rental, for long or short term stay. 31 July 2017 - 18:35:00

A comfortable, fully appointed cottage nestled into a lovely back garden. Joan was helpful and warm. The location is ideal--within walking distance to Solano Avenue, the Gourmet Ghetto, and the Monterey Market. Street parking was easy. All in all, a delightful three night stay. We hope to be back! 04 August 2017 - 15:18:00

We had a wonderful three-night stay in Joan's charming garden cottage. Joan is a terrific host, with that perfect combination of warm and welcoming and yet respectful of her guests' privacy. The cottage is super clean and well maintained, has a great kitchen, tasteful furnishings, and a very comfortable bed. I absolutely loved Joan's lush gardens with a sweet private outdoor seating area. Walking distance to restaurants, grocery store and shops on Solano Avenue, as well as the Monterey Market. We would love to return sometime soon. 09 August 2017 - 17:19:00

We stayed in Joan's cottage for 12 days. It was perfect for us! It is a lovely spot. It is very clean, bright, cheerful, nicely decorated & very well appointed. The kitchen has everything you need for cooking, and it was nice for us to have a table for 4. Joan was responsive, friendly, and helpful. Location is excellent! We would certainly recommend it. 20 August 2017 - 18:10:00

The cottage was quaint, clean and well appointed. Very comfortable bed and lovely pillows and bed linens. The two skylights helped keep the space cool. The location is perfect within walking distance to shops and great restaurants. I will definitely rent from Joan when returning to Berkeley! 29 August 2017 - 01:58:00

"The Cottage" was everything and more!! Joan had thought of everything to make our stay perfect. The kitchen is fully equipped and you really could prepare full meals if you were so inclined. The gardens are lovely and so peaceful. It was just nice to be able to come "home" and relax after full days in San Francisco and Berkeley. We hope to stay at the cottage again if Joan has any available dates. It is a very popular place and now we know why!! 27 September 2017 - 20:03:00

Lovely garden, well appointed kitchen and great location. You can tell great thought and care was taken in creating this very comfortable oasis in the midst of a bustling city. Dim sum at King Tsin on Solano Street was delicious. I enjoyed my stay and would recommend this property to a friend. 14 July 2010 - 01:03:59

Had a fabulous few days in this cottage. New and nicely decorated, about a 5 minute walk to Solano Ave. Set in a nicely landscaped backyard. I would recommend this to anyone. 03 August 2010 - 14:54:26

I stayed at the cottage for 9 days and was really impressed by the creative use of space for a studio. All of the furniture and appliances are modern and in excellent condition. I was able to cook, work, watch TV, and sleep in great comfort. The skylights and windows keep the cottage bright and airy. And the proximity to Solano Avenue with all its great restaurants and amenities (laundry, copy center, food shopping) cannot be beat! Plenty of off street parking - a perfect location on a great block in the heart of one of Berkeley's best areas. 09 August 2011 - 00:18:04

The apartment was clean and comfortable. It took me a day to figure out that I could use the pole in the closet to close the skylight. Many thoughtful intelligent touches. Reliable wifi. Climate controlled, which was wonderful. The set up was just perfect for 1 or 2 people. Extremely safe neighborhood, though crossing the street right before the apt can be a little challenging. I was a little mislead by the "North Berkeley" town name in ad title, as well as one of the other reviews here that state the apartment is walkable to UC Berkeley. The apartment is a 10 minute drive to UC Berkeley. Get in your car and drive for 10 minutes. Now imagine walking that same distance with hills--steep, steep hills...NOT walkable. 10 minute drive or 18 minute bus. The apartment is in Albany, California, 2 blocks from the Berkeley border. Knowing that upfront would have given me a better idea of how far the apartment was from the sights I wanted to see. All in all, a good experience. Andronico's Market is overpriced and nothing special. I had to return some brie cheese to them because it was rotten. Watch out for their dairy. Safeway is just as close if not closer and a much better choice. I would definitely recommend this great apartment, especially if you have a car. Reasonably priced, clean. wonderful shops and restaurants just blocks away. Just know what you're getting into, that you can't walk to BART or UC Berkeley unless you have an extra 45 minutes to an hour to do so. 05 December 2015 - 17:23:02

This lovely cottage in a charming neighborhood is perfectly located for exploring the east side of the bay. It's an easy drive up the hill to glorious hiking in Tilden Regional Park, a two block stroll to terrific restaurants on Solano, and only about ten minutes to the UC Berkeley campus. The cleverly designed converted garage has everything one needs for a quiet stay, and its own sweet patio space surrounded by gorgeous landscaping. Very private, though steps away from the main house. A car is a good idea, though Lyft and Uber make getting anywhere easy. 11 September 2016 - 21:59:39

We gladly returned for our third stay at this home away from home. The roomy studio is aesthetically pleasing, quiet, well lit from the windows and indoor lights, and ideal for one or two people. The queen bed is so comfortable, the kitchen is well-equipped with even a dishwasher, the bathroom shower has instant hot water, the wifi works flawlessly, and the leather couch is super for stetching out on. And the garden is beautiful! Another big plus is that Solano Avenue is a block away filled up and down with fine restaurants, supermarkets, bookstores, a nursery, bank, stationery store, coffee shops, and so much more. We often come up to Berkeley to visit our family, and this is our first choice to stay if it is available. 21 December 2017 - 00:29:00
