LOCATION The apartment is situated on the Prinseneiland. I will give you some information about our location in relation to the rest of the city. First of all, our neighborhood is still part of the Centre of Amsterdam. It is a very quiet and safe 'little village' right next to the 'busy' part of the city. There are still a few little shipyards but most of the warehouses are converted into residences. The city is more or less built in circles around the centre. We are the western part of the centre, nearby Central Station. That is at this moment I think the most popular part. Next to our apartment lies the famous Jordaan. The Jordaan is a small part of the city, famous for the narrow streets with little shops, cafes and restaurants. We are divided from the Jordaan by a very nice shopping street. In this street there are two normal supermarkets (open 8AM/10PM), bakeries, a butcher and two organic supermarkets. There are all kind of shops, cafés, nice little restaurants everywhere around us. We think Amsterdam is more a “big village”. That is, the part where you want to be as a visitor. You can walk everything, but certainly on the bike everything is really nearby. The address is Prinseneiland 10, Amsterdam if you want to look it up on Google Maps. The street view is still from the period we were building, a few years ago. But one of the pictures you can click shows the finished building. Walking distance to the Central Station 15 minutes (bike 7 minutes), Jordaan 10 minutes (bike 5 minutes), Dam 17 minutes (bike 10 minutes), and Rijks Museum / Van Gogh / Stedelijk Museum (contamporary/modern art) 35 minutes (bike 20 minutes), Anne Frank Museum 10minutes (bike 5 minutes). If you want to explore more of the city we have bikes for rent and there are trams and buses to all parts of the city at a 4-minute walk. Apart from the general maps that we provide, we also made a map of our neighbourhood. A selection of breakfast-/lunch-places/restaurants/supermarkets is pointed out on this map. We also have “around the corner” a few very nice and good restaurants. We are happy to advise you and/or make reservations for you.

We stayed here with our two teenage children for a long weekend and were totally impressed with the Boat House, the owners, and the location. The house is modern, clean, and beautiful with all the comforts of home, lovely views from the huge windows, lovely bedrooms, all spotlessly clean and well furnished, and with very good kitchen facilities. A generous welcome pack of snacks was a most welcome surprise. The neighbourhood is really pleasant - quiet, mainly residential and with a couple of good restaurants / cafes, and made for lovely evening strolls. It's also very convenient to get to and from the station, walking. The owners live nearby, met us when we arrived and were really helpful and friendly. We hired bicycles from the owners who only charged for the days we used them - another sign of their great approach and attitude. We've stayed in several self-catering units for city breaks in the last couple of years and all voted this the best, by a long way. Superb. Ian and Jeannine 09 May 2013 - 17:07:33

The Boat House was a wonderfully quiet oasis in Amsterdam! It was our first visit to Amsterdam, and its central location was easily accessed by foot even for my senior parents. Banks, restaurants and grocery stores are close by on Haarlemer Straat. The museums are an easy tram ride away. The Boat House has two fabulously comfortable king sized beds in bedrooms on the main floor overlooking the canal. You can see the boats float by from the bedroom windows! Up the stairs is the kitchen which is fully equipped with modern amenities, and even stocked with a few treats! Lisebeth and Wouter went out of their way to make sure that we were well looked after during our stay. The apartment was spotless and well maintained. I would definitely recommend the Boat House as the perfect place to stay in Amsterdam! 15 May 2013 - 23:48:30

The house is right at the top of the Jordaan area with great bars and restaurants close by. Everything you will need including a gym is in walking distance but given that it is on a small island it is still very quiet. The house itself has great natural light with a view right onto the canal. I would definitely stay there again. Andrew 07 June 2013 - 08:16:51

We enjoyed good communication prior to our arrival in Amsterdam and were welcomed by the owner. We loved the location on the canal, it was never a boring scene outside. The apartment has been tastefully and thoughtfully designed. The bed was most comfortable and everything works.Bathrobes and slippers and toiletries provided and since it is hard to travel with robes that was also appreciated. We also like the loan of a mobile phone that Wouter had provided. Plenty of information on local events and galleries at the apartment. Wouter gave us a specific map of various places to eat nearby. I would return and recommend The Boat House if visiting Amsterdam, it is the closest to staying on a boat in the canal with much more space and conveniences. 09 July 2013 - 06:06:15

Thank you for the wonderful three nights stay. It gave us one of the most beautiful canal view and the apartment was very well maintain. It had everything you need inside. Owners have so carefully and thoughtfully provided everything. From toiletries, to kitchen utensils, to laundry detergent, and even umbrellas (which came in handy for us as it rained during our stay), all were nicely provided to ensure we had a good stay. Owner even provided orange juice and white wine for us in the fridge. It was like they really had thought about having the place for themselves to stay... we couldn't find anything missing. The apartment and its area was quiet and we could enjoy the canal view everyday through the patio and dining area. It is like we had everything really! In fact, throughout our holidays, the Boat House has set the standards so high that none of the rest of the apartments that we rented could meet the same kind of comfort we had there. Thanks for everything! 30 September 2013 - 01:07:38

The boathouse is an awesome accommodation. The location (on a small island) is quiet at night yet the busy and interesting Harlemmerdijk is only 4 or 5-min away by bike. You can easily reach all the major Amsterdam museums and attractions by bike. The building is first class of masonry construction secured with heavy windows and doors. The property was previously operated as a shipyard by the owner and the improvements have a nautical flavor. Everything is Quality with a capital 'Q'. The place is spotlessly clean with excellent bedding and linens, electronics, plumbing, kitchen appliances & utensils. We were provided a cell phone for making reservations and such. The bath has a fog-free mirror. An extra duvet was in the closet along with a table fan. The owners were always available but never hovering. So all-in-all our stay was more than comfortable in an exciting and interesting city. 02 October 2013 - 12:24:15

Myself and a friend stayed for 2 nights in the wonderfully stylish and spacious Wharf House. Our hosts, Wouter and Liesbeth, were very welcoming and keen to help us have the best stay possible - which we did. Every possible amenity is available in the accomodation - it is clean, bright and yet homely - with wonderful floor to ceiling windows overlooking the canal - a real treat to wake up to. The personal touches of wine, croissants, tea, coffee and milk supplied for our convenience was much appreciated - as were the museum cards for free entry and the local mobile phone provided - in case we got lost! The added convenience of having the option of pick-up/drop-off to airport was greatly welcomed by us - no worrying about how to find the area, etc. - also, the option of a boat trip through the canals captained by Wouter, is a must. Unfortunately for us the recent storm had uprooted a few trees along the smaller canals, making it impossible to pass, but still - a wonderful experience. If you are thinking of visiting Amsterdam - don't pay huge prices to stay in impersonal, sterile hotels - treat yourself and stay at the Wharf House! 31 October 2013 - 11:53:17

11 January 2014 - 11:06:02

Our family of four stayed five nights in this wonderful two-level apartment. It is the largest of four apartments that the owners have created in a former wharfhouse. We were amazed and hypnotized by the beautiful view over two canals, old canal houses, a yellow submarine houseboat and flocks of ducks and swans. It was extremely quiet day and night, yet only a five minute walk to a shopping street. The new apartment is well designed, very clean, comfortable and pleasantly furnished. We made good use of the dishwasher, washer and dryer, and cooked some dinners on the kitchen island. The owner supplied us with a map of restaurants and shopping in the neighborhood, and gave us his useful recommendations; we especially enjoyed dinner at Bickers aan de Werf, a few minutes walk away. One of our sons had just finished a semester studying in Amsterdam and he was also highly impressed by the charming neighborhood, tranquillity, and beautiful design of the apartment. We can't wait to return! 14 January 2014 - 01:50:50

Dear Wouter, We just wanted to contact you, to repeat to yourself and your wife Lisbeth, how much we enjoyed our stay at the Boat House. We have been coming to Amsterdam every year for the last 10 years and have stayed in some beautiful (and not so beautiful) residences. The Boat House surpassed all previous stays with its charm and style. The views are incredible and 'vibe' of the island is perfect. All four of us were completely blown away ! We would also like to thank you for the little extras, such a welcome touch, from the coffee and tea to wine and juice in the fridge and even our own slippers !! Finally, we enjoyed the boat trip around the beautiful canals so much, made even more special being served hot drinks and cookies on board. You have a beautiful place and we can't wait to return. Many thanks again for a wonderful weekend. 16 January 2014 - 17:56:23

What a wonderful place to stay, and what lovely people who own and run it. We feel so fortunate to have found the Boat House in Amsterdam, which is even better than it looks on the rental listing site. It is spotlessly clean, beautifully appointed, the fixtures and fittings are excellent and it is a calm, quiet haven, where you can enjoy the views of the canal, cook great meals and relax. Wouter and Liesbeth have thought of everything to make their guests comfortable. How many landlords provide you with all the essentials for breakfast and a bottle of wine on arrival? Not many in our experience! The museum passes provided for four people were also much appreciated by us, as a family we find museum entrance fees can cost a lot for four people, and we certainly used the passes to good effect during our stay. The location of the apartment is great, close enough to the centre to walk everywhere if you choose, but also very quiet, away from the noisy nightlife of the very centre of the city. The highlight for all of us, and especially for our children, was the boat trip with Wouter around the Amsterdam canals. My children will never forget the thrill of taking the wheel of a boat and being taught and encouraged to steer under the narrow Amsterdam bridges. A lovely memory for them of their Netherlands holiday. I cannot recommend this apartment highly enough - only come to Amsterdam when you know you can stay here! This is a truly special place. 19 February 2014 - 20:31:30

The Boat House was recommended to us by friends and are we ever happy we took their advice! From the moment we were welcomed by the owner to the time we were dropped off at the airport we have nothing but kudos to both Wouter and Liesbeth. Upon arrival we found some lovely flowers, coffee, cookies and even a bottle of chilled wine. The location is perfect, we took advantage of the close proximity of Haarlemmerweg, a great street for shopping and dining. The tram and station are a stone's throw away. The bedrooms are quiet with comfortable beds, the living quarters and kitchen area spacious with a great view of the canal. Don't forget to ask Wouter to take you on a tour of the canals, much enjoyed by all in our party. We would love to come back one day. Thank you both! 22 May 2014 - 02:10:37

We had the good fortune to discover The Boathouse in our review of listings suitable for a two week stay in Amsterdam. Ideally located on the tranquil oasis of Prinseneiland near the heart of the city, The Boathouse provides easy access to public transit, shopping, area attractions and the delightfully bohemian Jordaan district. With a full range of amenities and comforts, the property was as advertised and more. Wouter and Liesbeth's care in ensuring our needs were met through provision of maps, directions, guidance and recommendations for restaurants, sightseeing, vehicle rentals, etc. was sincerely appreciated. Wouter was kind enough to also supply us, unbidden, with a cellphone with a range of helpful contact numbers loaded into the directory for use during our stay! With a kitchen already stocked with all the essentials when we arrived, including wine, snacks, breakfast items, coffee and tea we were immediately able to begin to relax and enjoy! Wouter's offered airport pick up and drop off service is recommended - seamless and efficient. And by all means take in the canal tour he offers as well, very enjoyable! We miss our early morning coffees in the sun on our patio immediately next to the canal, taking in canal life and the park across the way. We're already scheming for an early return to this idyllic property in one of Europe's most fascinating cities! 15 June 2014 - 16:45:06

This was our first trip to Holland and we couldn't have had a better start than staying at the Boat House! There were four of us total. The house was very spacious and clean. The area was quiet which was relaxing after days of touring busy Amsterdam. Wouter gave us a map of the area which ended up being our "bible" to keep us from getting lost in Amsterdam. He gave us reccommendations for restaurants. Each place we visited was a delight and delicious! He gave us a mobile phone to use if we needed and it was a huge help. He had pamphlets for interesting sites to see and free WiFi if needed. Many wonderful sites were in walking distance, but if whe needed, he supplied bikes. Buses and trams are also close by. Our cousins stopped by to check out our accomadations. They were so impressed that they took down Wouter's information to use for their American immediate family when they visit. If I ever get a chance to return to Amsterdam, I won't bother searching for a place to stay. I will definately use Wouter's homes again. 09 July 2014 - 19:56:01

My husband, I and our two kids stayed in this ideal Amsterdam apartment for 4 nights. It was clean, bright, and had everything we needed. Our favorite aspect was the sunny great room with large glass doors that opened wide. With the doors flung open, we spent happy early mornings and evenings enjoying the happenings on the canal below us. The apartment is in a lovely quiet neighbourhood, within walking distance to the centre of Amsterdam but away from the hustle and bustle. Wouter is a ship-builder and the apartment features many clever ship-related design details. He was the ideal guide for an enjoyable canal tour, sharing many details of the city and the Amsterdam community. Our son will always remember steering Wouter's boat through the canals. Wouter was an ideal host who made us feel welcome and cared for. If we have the good fortune to return to Amsterdam again, we would return to this lovely home-away-from-home. 31 August 2014 - 09:33:56

Wow, what a treat! My wife and I travel all over Europe and stay in apartments almost exclusively. This is by far one of the best places we have ever stayed. The location is great. Away from the hustle and bustle but just a short walk to the main sites such as the Dam Square. Extremely quiet. The place is clean, new, safe and modern. I especially enjoyed the spacious shower. The only possible draw back is that it is not air conditioned. This was not an issue for us because the temperature was very comfortable while we were there. The view of the canal is beautiful. We found several really good places to eat within a 10 minute walk. I highly recommend this place. Note that the bedrooms are on the ground floor and the living space is upstairs. 03 October 2014 - 15:41:24

We had the pleasure of renting their 2 bedroom boat house apartment over Spring break. With two teens, plenty of lounge space and wifi are always critical to a happy vacation. This apartment is spacious, light, and well-appointed with all needed amenities. The view from the living/dining room area overlooks the canal and there are two docks outside to sit on while sipping a glass of wine. The owners are very nice, and made sure we had everything we needed to enjoy our stay. The IPOD docking station was a nice touch! It was a treat to listen to our music while cooking or planning our day. The location is about a 10-15 minute walk from the train station, heading West. It's an easy walk, but if you are pulling bags you'll be contending with cobblestones. The location is nice because it's close to the #3 tram which heads to the museums, about a 15 minute tram ride. We walked everywhere else. There is a main shopping street that runs along the neighborhood there with many restaurants, grocery stores, "coffee shops", and more. It took us about 10 minutes to walk to the Ann Frank house, and about 15 minutes to Dam Square. If you are looking for a spacious, well-appointed rental that is peaceful in the evening, and located in a lovely, safe neighborhood, then the Boat House is for you! They do have bike rentals but we did not use them. We did take advantage of the personal one hour canal cruise and loved it! The owner's neighbor did the tour, and told us lots of history and personal stories to go along with it. Getting to and from the airport: We took the train from the airport (easy to do) and walked from the train station using the directions the owner provided. The tickets were only E4 each. The taxi drivers at the airport seem to be unregulated crooks who wanted to charge us E15/person with no meter! Our return flight was early in the morning so we opted to hire a private car (the owner provided) for E35. 24 April 2015 - 07:34:30

Staying at the boathouse was the highlight of our visit! We started a 3-week biking adventure with 5 days in this charming hideaway on the water, just a 5-10 minute walk to Central Station. This home is sized perfectly for 2 couples. It is clean, perfectly designed, and delightfully situated! Wouter is an excellent homeowner who takes pride in his property and is helpful and very good to his guests. We are walkers and loved wandering around his island and the quick walk over to the heart of the city! We highly recommend this home to all. We will be back! Thank you, Wouter!!! 11 May 2015 - 20:50:12

Our family of four just returned from our stay in the Boat House! We Loved it! Wouter and Liesbeth are very welcoming and helpful. The home has everything we needed- and it was very clean and well cared for. They provided a cell phone for us to use, maps, brochures and recommendations for shopping and eating. They had snacks and a bottle of wine chilled for us. There are plenty of towels and face cloths too. Wouter was very responsive and answered all my questions many times before we travelled to the Netherlands. We had never been out of the US and Wouter and Liesbeth were so caring and available! We truly hope to visit again and would love to rent from them. The area is extremely safe, and easy to walk to! The home is at the junction of 2 canals and we enjoyed watching the boats. Before we left, Liesbeth kindly arranged for a taxi for us to the airport. Excellent experience and vacation rental! 29 May 2017 - 22:16:00
