About listing

Do you want all the joys of New York City but the relaxation of returning to a cozy house in a unique and diverse area? This property is located near the N and Q subway line on a quiet street only a 10-minute ride from Manhattan. In addition, as one of the most ethnically diverse neighborhoods in the world, Astoria--especially famous for its Greek and Italian food--features restaurants where you can eat very well without the high price tag. The subway, which is one block from the house, is a direct line to NYU and convenient to all tourist attractions as well as attractions off the beaten path. If you have children, you will want to visit the renown New York Hall of Science in Flushing (also accessible by subway), which is right next to the Queens Zoo. We are in walking distance from the Noguchi Museum and the Museum of the Moving Image. The Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan is a ten-minute ride, and Greenwich Village is eighteen minutes away. The refinished basement with a double futon and its own bathroom and access to the garden could be used for an office or a bedroom. The master bedroom upstairs sleeps two and is near the children's bedroom with a bunk bed that accommodates two.

We were the very first people to stay here, so I'll try to do a concise good vs. bad for the benefit of all. First, this property is not a "vacation rental". It is the home of a family, so you are living amongst their "stuff" (at least the stuff they don't lock away before you get there). This didn't bother us; we are respectful renters and took good care of their property. The location of this home is fantastic. You are about 1.5 blocks from the subway, around the corner from one of the main streets in Astoria. There are SO MANY ethnic restaurants in the area, so there are numerous dining options. If you choose to use the kitchen in the home, there is a supermarket only a few blocks away. (Actually, there are a couple of choices.) The house provides sleeping space for 7-8 people. There is a VERY comfortable 2 person bed in the master bedroom. single bunk beds in the kid's room. There is a double sleeper sofa in the living room and a double bed in the basement. There are two bathrooms, both with showers. There is a nice kitchen and a dining area. The neighborhood felt very, very safe. I believe the owners allow pets with prior arrangement. Cable TV and Netflix are available, and the wifi works beautifully. The downside: There is a beautiful bathtub in the upstairs bathroom, but you can't use it. Such a shame. Plenty of towels are available, but the owners did not provide any washcloths. There were not blankets for all the beds. We used one of the blankets from the master bed for the sleeper sofa. The heat in the house works TOO well. We kept it off most of the time. The house was TOO warm! The washer and dryer are old and don't work very well. The dryer squeals, but the owners know about that. The kitchen has minimal dishware. We had 5 people staying in the house, and my daughter and a friend came over for meals. There were barely enough glasses for beverages for all. It's not a cook's kitchen. There is only the bare minimum of pots, pans, cookware. The microwave does not work, which can be a REAL problem for travelers. It makes it difficult to heat up restaurant leftovers. There were no kitchen towels, so no way to dry dishes that could not go in the dishwasher. We ended up using a lot of paper towels. One thing to know, the owners require all adults staying at the residence to provide picture IDs in advance of your stay. According to VRBO this is legal. I've never encountered that requirement before. 12 January 2017 - 03:14:00
