About listing

Our renovated 1870s refuge is the closest you can get to a comfortable old house in the country, but still be in New York City. The lush landscape with tree swing and play area allows you to switch off Manhattan, but it's just a 20 minute walk or four bus stops, down to the Ferry, then the greatest free ride in the world into town. You can see the Verrazano Bridge twinkling from our windows, and the sea from our street. Indoors you will have room to spread out, cook dinner and relax after a tough day of tourism. Just bring your clothes, we provide everything else. Extended family and friend groups of 5-9 are our specialty. If your crowd is bigger, we have another apartment upstairs in the same house. You don't need a car, shops and restaurants are a few minutes' walk away. But if you bring one, you will have no trouble parking on our street without the dreaded 'alternate side' hassles you get elsewhere in NYC. Staying here does require climbing steps, and some spirit of adventure. You need to feel comfortable in a diverse residential neighborhood where people of many races and economic groups live close together, in harmony. Add a romantic, adventurous twist to your stay in New York. Despite fare increases everywhere else, the Staten Island Ferry remains the greatest FREE ride in the world, the most beautiful way to enter New York and view the Statue of Liberty and the downtown skyline. Ferries run 24/7, usually every half hour. The ferry terminal is a relaxing 15 minute walk downhill from the house. If you're feeling less energetic on the way back, cabs are available at the terminal for about $5. Cheap Eats Within a few minutes walk of our house, you can enjoy, Mexican, Italian, Polish, Sri Lankan and Senegalese cuisines, among others, at much lower prices than the Manhattan tourist traps. Feast on Downtown Staten Island! Keywords: House

Our family of 8 had a wonderful experience at this rental. We found the house to have a lot of character. It provided privacy and space for all. My granddaughter loved the swing and toys we also enjoyed the patio to sit and unwind after busy days in the city. The kitchen offered everything needed to cook big breakfasts to start our day. The host's son was very accommodating and helpful. The ferry was not far away and provided easy access to the city. Thanks for sharing Vertiogo with us. 12 April 2015 - 21:45:28

Had a great stay at Craig and Helen's place! They provided everything we needed and were just a phone call away. The house was spacious and tucked away in a small hilltop which was really nice. Had a nice view from the back patio so we had our morning coffee out there and took advantage of the giant swing hanging from the tree. It was quiet, relaxing and very cozy. I would highly recommend this property. Thanks Craig and Helen! 29 July 2015 - 00:09:39

NIce house in close proximity to the Staten Island ferry. We had 6 people and were very comfortable in this house. Did not meet the owners however everything was ready for us on arrival. Owner was flexible allowing us to arrive a little earlier than the normal arrival time. Lots of stairs getting up to the house. House is in good condition considering the age. Nice neighborhood and had no problem finding parking in front of the house. Parking down at the ferry is tight but a couple of blocks away from the ferry is a municipal parking garage. Parking is only $8 for the day. Ferry is free and the 1 and R trains are right at the station when you arrive in NYC. The 1 train runs all the time to the South Ferry station (R doesn't). Key Foods supermarket on the corner of Victory and Bay is a good spot to get groceries. 21 December 2015 - 00:48:42

This place was great. Large enough to spend some time apart but quaint enough to hang out with everyone. The location was easy to get to from all airports using public transit or personal vehicles. Only mishap was we were expecting one more bed, but due to a makeover it wasn't there. We contacted Elena and Craig who explained the situation and that there was a mattress and sheets to use in replace of the bed. Seeing as they were high school students, they didn't care what they slept on and he was just happy he didn't have to sleep on the floor! Great place, could not recommend more! 01 July 2016 - 02:53:34

We wanted to take a family trip to NYC and needed to take our two dogs along with us. We began our search on Home Away because we are a family of 6 (4 children ages 8-15) so we knew we wanted a house rental. We found Elena and Craig with their property on Staten Island. I fell in love with the idea of taking the ferry trip daily into the city as well as having a more quite place to go "home" to at the end of our day. I reached out to Elena and Craig though the site and asked about the dogs as well as some other things I had questions about. They were quick to reply and agreed my dogs were welcome to stay at thier property with us. We arrived late but entry to the property was easy. Craig had told me he too had planned a trip at the same time and would be staying in the apartment upstairs. I was a bit worried that it wouldn't be as private of a stay as I had planned, but that was not the case at all. We barely knew he was there, he came down to introduce himself and meet us on the first full day of our visit but never really saw him again until we had run into him packing his car to head home himself. Some reviews of this property state it is not a nice neighborhood, I would disagree. I never felt unsafe no matter how late we came home. Some spots in the area can look rundown but the street itself is perfectly fine. You need to keep in mind this is an urban setting, if you are looking to travel to the city you should expect city life when you arive. There were friendly neighbors all around, we stayed for 5 days and had met a few people along the way. The house itself was clean and had everything we needed, pots, pans, bedding and towels. The house had plenty of room for our large family and two dogs. We did not feel at all cramped and enjoy the property as much as the sightseeing we did. We all agreed we would stay here again. 17 July 2017 - 15:56:00

I know it is an older house but it could use a good deep clean there is stuff all over the walls and the floors were gross. Also I have lived in a diverse area and this was not diverse this is a not so great part of town when we would come home we would have people ask for money and when we would say we didn't have anything they would call us names. The owners did send an email asking about the house and no I did not respond bc we were also on the go except when we would be there to sleep and eat breakfast. So it isn't all there fault about the issues because I did not complain the but their cleaning person should be replaced the floors were dirty the coffee pot still had stuff in it and the house smelled like raid bug spray bad. The down stairs was super scary to go down and the air conditioner did not work and when we would come back at night there were a ton of flies downstairs. My teenage daughter went to get a blanket out of the closet and a pair of panties came flying out which was super nasty. My kids did enjoy the outside rope swing. But once again you get what you pay for. 06 July 2017 - 22:30:00

We enjoyed our stayed. There were 4 of us and we had lots of room to ourselves, although we basically just stayed there to sleep. I've been told that the neighbourhood is questionable, but when you wake up in the morning and leave, the neighbours were very friendly. We were hoping to do a lot more on Staten Island, but it took awhile to get anywhere (ie. we went to the Mall and went during rush hour traffic, and it took us over an hour on the bus). Therefore, we chose to go back Manhattan daily. Easily accessible to get to many destinations once you were off the ferry ride daily. We did Coney Island, Yankees game in the Bronx, Empire State Building, Central Park and made our way to Brooklyn for an afternoon. 05 June 2017 - 19:05:00

We were 2 french families to visit New York during 3 days, this rental was a very good deal between the location (on Staten Island, 20mm walk to ferry Station, then 25mn ferry to Manhattan), space in the house (4 bedrooms) and price per night. Even if the house looks a little bit old, you find everything you need. Our stay there was successfull! 16 April 2017 - 02:07:00
  10. Had an awesome stay. Was very close to the ferry and made it easy to travel into Manhattan. Also we were snowed in and this place gave us room to stretch out. Enjoyed all the fully furnished amenities. The neighborhood looks a little rough but it really is the total opposite. The neighbors were very friendly and very inviting. There were more than willing to help with lending us tools to clear the snow on our vehicle. I will definitely stay here again and recommend to my friends. 16 March 2017 - 17:15:00

I can't say enough good things about this house and the people who own it. We have seven kids and spent sixteen days this summer on an American history trip (Niagara Falls, Boston, Lexington & Concord, Plymouth, Cape Cod, etc). We were headed into New York, kind of on a whim and with no reservations (because that's the way we roll, lol). We prayed that God would bring us to the perfect spot for our big family, and this house popped up on my phone just as we were entering this enormous city, completely lost on a Saturday night. I called the owner, and, having had a last-minute cancellation, the house was ready and waiting for us at that very moment. We were literally just a couple miles from the tunnel to get there. LOVE how God works! Anyway, the owners were amazing. They quickly texted us the needed information to get to the house, park, and get inside, and we were unpacking our van just as the sun was going down. This house has CHARACTER! My family loved it, as there was much to explore. My little ones loved having toys and books to play with, and after having been cooped up in the van for most of the day (and after staying in a much smaller house for the previous week), all nine of us had space to spread out. Our middle-aged kids were also thrilled with the swing, the garden snails, and their own private yard to explore. The house is in great proximity to a grocery store and the ferry station, which we used frequently. It has a well-stocked kitchen, plenty of linens and towels, and pretty much everything we could have needed. If you are looking for pristine and ritzy, go stay at a fancy hotel; but if you love the character of old houses and would like a place to stretch your legs, this is the house for you. Thanks for a wonderful experience! 23 July 2016 - 16:34:41

Very convenient to the ferry, spacious home, everything was clean and beds were comfy. I would stay again, owners response time was very quick and they were super nice. 06 January 2017 - 08:04:00

Our family of six really enjoyed our stay. This old Victorian home (along with the neighborhood) has lots of character. The beds were comfy and having two bathrooms was great. We cooked breakfast before heading into the city, and really enjoyed the space after our busy, crowded days in NY. Plenty of very hot water came in super handy when it came time for showers. Would stay there again if we come back to the Big Apple. 17 May 2017 - 04:25:00

We really enjoyed our stay in this home. There was plenty of room for the two of us and the 7 adults and teenagers we brought with us. Even with snow during our stay, we never had a problem parking in front of the house. Riding the ferry into and out of Manhattan was easy and free, with parking cost of $8 per vehicle for 18 hours. There was a slight musty smell in the house, but it is not overwhelming. The radiant heat kept the house very warm even with the cold temps outside. Plenty of hot water for all of us, even when we were all getting ready at once. There are tons of towels and extra blankets and sheets available. We accidentally left an item behind, and the owner's son was able to meet us when we had checked out almost 7 hours before. We all agreed we would stay at this home again. Thanks so much for making our first home rental such a great experience! 27 December 2017 - 01:18:00

For two families of four, this made for a perfect spot for us! We visited the NYC by driving to the ferry, parking and as it was only $8 for the day, and FREE on Sundays, but get there early! Free Ferry Fares! We also enjoyed ordering from Joe and Pats Pizza! Faucet in the kitchen sink had a small issue, take your time to turn off the water. 20 December 2017 - 23:09:00

Upon arriving we were met by Helen, the caretaker. She showed my husband all around the house and where things were. There were nine of us traveling together for site-seeing and to see the play, Anastasia. Our first full day we walked to the ferry with no problems, but were exhausted walking back up to the house as it was uphill (we did have two little ones with us, so that made it a little harder). No worries, we just decided after that we would drive the car down to the ferry and park it for the day which worked great! The house had plenty of space for us and we had plenty of hot water for showers for all of us. I would recommend this house to anyone that would like to stay close for a good price! Thanks to Elena and Craig for sharing their home with us! The Bowers' family from Ohio 16 October 2017 - 19:42:00

We recently stayed here! Plenty of room for my family - the split room (2 bedrooms joined) was perfect for my son, his wife, and their 6 year old. Love the food suggestions and directions. Cons were the 25 minute walk to the ferry (and we are walkers and it took us that long), only 1 tv in the whole house, and the dryer that did not turn off. I expected no central air due to the age of the house, however, it did get very warm. The block that the house is on is very nice however, the neighborhood you walk to get to the ferry is dicey. Not bad for the price - however take your car to the ferry and park it. 18 September 2017 - 02:52:00

Elena is a truly wonderful person. She is very caring and had all the amenities in the house before we checked in. She was also willing to help us with any additional requests we had. She is the ideal host for any traveler. The house itself is not modern(but that was clearly explained and we had our expectations set). For us, it served the purpose really well and we would love to stay with Elena and Craig if we ever come back! 14 September 2017 - 14:44:00

Good for the price, not lavishly furnished. Good for 2 families. We enjoyed our stay. Limited AC area was a bit issue but you can't expect too much at this price. Overall we had a good time. 22 August 2017 - 21:01:00
