My sister and I rented the Laurel property for our "grown kids" who were visiting the Bay Area to attend my younger son's graduation. The location of the property was convenient to our home and to getting around the Bay Area. The surrounding garden is lovely! Lots of flowers, vegetable plants, trees, shade and areas to sit and enjoy the serenity of the garden. The host was very friendly, flexible and responsive. The property accommodations were great - clean, tastefully decorated, with a convenient layout and quite comfortable. I highly recommend this property. 09 June 2017 - 20:10:00

This is a special cottage and garden set in a small wooded canyon in the Oakland hills. It is very peaceful and private and close to all the amenities of the Bay Area. Hope to visit again one day. 08 June 2017 - 23:51:00

The beauty of this property made our trip to San Francisco even more wonderful! Every ammenity was provided and Keith responded to our questions promptly. Our kids enjoyed exploring the gardens while my husband and I cherished time relaxing among the beautiful flowers between sightseeing adventures. If we ever come back this way we will definitely book this property again. 17 June 2017 - 18:46:00

There is something to be said when you are visited in the morning by beautiful hummingbirds, the sound of a stream that puts you at ease at night, and the aroma of flowers as the wind blows. The home and property is absolutely beautiful and serene. We enjoyed cooking and grilling, eating and drinking, and walking the grounds each day we were there; even taking moments to play with Keith's beautiful pup girl. The home and care says plenty about Keith. He allows guest to enjoy his garden and the fruit it produces. The location was perfect for us having the supermarket and farmers market within 5 minute driving distance. San Francisco sights were 40 minutes to an hour away; we took in a movie at a famous old charm theatre in Oakland; even had family visit taking full advantage of a wonderful evening under the stars. Its worth the experience if you want to enjoy San Francisco and Oakland, yet escape and hide in this beautiful gem. 21 July 2017 - 12:48:00

Very clean, private, quiet and exceptional landscaping. The one bathroom is accessible through one of the bedrooms. Well stocked and the cable stations were much appreciated. 05 July 2017 - 23:02:00

Our time in San Fran/Oakland was enhanced with this clean, lovely home, delightful gardens and hospitality of our host Keith. The cottage offered a warmth and coziness with all the ammenities you could want. The beds were exqusite and the gardens soothing, beautiful and most relaxing. The beds in the cottage were luxurious and provided 6 nights of the most restful sleep I have had in quite awhile!! Keith provided all the creature comforts and hospitality that anyone could want, complete with his dog Stella, for those of us missing our pets and yet was most respectful of our privacy Thank you Keith It felt like home away from home and even better at times! I highly recommend this cottage for your stay and I look forward to staying here again when I return to the area. Thank you Keith for the use of your FABULOUS home!! 14 August 2017 - 13:53:00

From the moment the 3 of us arrived we fell in love with this place. It was so clean and well looked after by the owner Keith who was there to greet us. The garden was full of flowers and dome lovely tomatoes courgettes and the last of the runner beans plus of course freshly picked lemons. The beds were so comfortable we all slept so well and the kitchen well equipped so we could eat at home, usually on the terrace after a long day in the city. It's easy and cheap to park at one of the Bart. Stations nearby so getting into the city was no problem. We loved it and we're sad to leave so a big thank you to Keith fir letting us share this dreamy house in a lovely part of Oakland. There are some lovely walks closeby if you have time. 27 August 2017 - 14:15:00

We greatly enyoyed the flowers, birds and particularly the tomatoes we picked right on the deck. Keith was most hospitable and available. This is truly a lovely natural pocket in Oakland and we hope to come again. 10 September 2017 - 13:00:00

Very comfortable property and great host, with attention to detail. We enjoyed coming back from our trips to San Francisco every day, to the quiet and peaceful respite here. Not recommended for the mobility challenged, but highly recommended for everyone else. You will like it here. 16 September 2017 - 15:05:00

We absolutely loved this cottage. The gardens are amazing. The cottage is located on a dead end street in a very nice neighborhood and was very quiet and peaceful. Everything was so comfortable. I loved the big refrigerator and the high countertops (no stooping). We cooked dinner here every night. Plenty of seating. The cottage had an amazing (giant) washer and dryer which cut down on multiple loads in a compact washer/dryer which is typical for rentals. There was a long drive you have to back out of if you want to park next to the cottage, but even with my poor backing up abilities I was able to maneuver it as it was not that steep. We traveled into San Francisco three days -- drove twice and took the Bart once. We also drove up to Muir Woods. The drive into San Francisco on a Sunday was not that bad, but during the week took about an hour with traffic. The Bart was much quicker and less stressful. Took a little over an hour to get to Muir Woods from the cottage with traffic. The owner lives next door, but other than a welcome hello, he was not intrusive. It was nice to know that he was close by if needed for anything. Would absolutely recommend this wonderful getaway. 26 June 2017 - 15:39:00

We stayed for a week visiting our daughter who lives within walking distance of this wonderful cottage. We hosted several dinners on the exquisite deck watching the humming birds in the beautifully landscaped yard. Went to sleep listening to the bubbling brook. Hard to believe this woodland retreat is so close to the city. Enjoyed many nice walks in the area. The beds were comfortable and the kitchen well equipped. Brand new washer and dryer were appreciated We will definitely come back for future visits. 03 May 2017 - 15:19:00

The property is in a quiet spot but not in the greatest of neighborhoods. Keith was a gracious host who had fresh cut flowers and lemons from the lemon tree available for us. My wife and I just found it a little odd that Keith stayed on the property in a little shed. There is one bathroom that is quite small, but the kitchen is well equipped (no dishwasher though). The beds were comfortable, although the carpeting and area rugs are a little stained. We also found it quite time consuming to make our way into San Francisco from this property. The traffic is something else. If you are looking for a quiet spot away from San Francisco and don't mind the drive and the time it takes then this is a nice property to stay. 09 October 2017 - 15:31:00

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this delightful cottage! We also liked meeting Keith, who was friendly and helpful! The cottage is well supplied and nicely decorated. The grounds make this place a real treat! There is a lovely deck and a little area with table and chairs higher in the garden. There are trees, plants, edible goodies and a creek! The birds are plentiful. The sun shines beautifully on the deck and cottage. There is good access to highways, 13 and 580. We look forward to staying here again! 27 October 2017 - 16:45:00

This cottage is a quaint hide-away surrounded by the most gorgeous gardens. It is so quiet and peaceful, you would never know it's minutes from busy Oakland areas. I loved sitting, drawing and painting in the middle of the most vibrant colored flowers and plants I've seen for a long time. Thank you for opening your home and letting me meet Stella. What a friendly little fluffy bear dog!! We will definitely be back! 26 April 2016 - 03:16:05

We thoroughly enjoyed our week in Oakland. The cottage is very well furnished and Keith provided lots of helpful information and notes about how things work. We did a lot of walking in the neighborhood, it felt very safe. If you meander east uphill, you eventually will catch some great views of the Bay, downtown Oakland and even San Francisco in the distance. We would definitely stay there again! I'd love to see the gardens at other times during the year. 01 December 2017 - 02:41:00
  18. For this listing, VRBO should be changed to VBROVisitor Beware of Rental. We rented this unit at the end of July, 2016 for 8 days. The gardens were readily available & we took advantage of the harvest on several occasions cooking meals with our son & daughter-in-law, who live nearby. We approached the owner about his No pet policy & got permission for our son to bring his dog in the evening. The owner cautiously consented as long as the dog was outside on the deck, was never to be in the cottage, & arrived after 7:30 PM. This was reasonable & we thanked him for his flexibility. On two occasions for a maximum of 3 hrs each, the dog was brought along. The dog was tied to the railing with a short leash that did not allow access to the cottage, but allowed him to lie down on the deck & his bed that was brought along. All of this leads up to the fact that 3 weeks after our return, the owner notified us that he was keeping our damage deposit. He claims the cleaners found small amounts of cat or dog hair in the cottage embedded in a section of the dining area carpet and in the bathroom and was vacuumed up the day we left . No pictures or tests were provided regarding evidence of pet hair. He said he was going to have to have the cottage completely sanitized & cleaned at a substantial cost, but has provided no copies of bills or statements. The owner was in the cottage the day we left & thanked us via text message for a Thank You note we left. Positive text interchanges took place when we returned home a week later. No mention of the pet hair during those exchanges. We wrote a detailed response to allegations. The sliding door is a well used traffic area for access outside. There are many ways debris can be tracked/blown into the house. Not all openings have screens. His response mostly dwelled on a previous renter with caged cats indoors that caused allergen & hair issues requiring extensive cleaning & sanitizing. Is this cost being carried forward to other renters? Undoubtedly, the owner will respond to this review with his claims of our violating the verbal agreement and having to clean & sanitize. This has turned into a He said, she said, stand off and left a trust and customer service issue with the owner and VRBO. He charges the damage deposit along with rental payment going directly into his account instead of breaking it up into rental and damage deposit. Insist that the damage deposit be charged separately 02 September 2016 - 21:36:52

What a nice place! Keith's cozy cottage is hidden away in lovely little canyon of the Oakland Hills. It's quiet, convenient, clean and charming, with all the amenities to make it a comfortable refuge from the Bay Area sprawl. The exterior dates back many years, but it's completely updated inside. Overall the cottage perfectly suited our needs. We hope to come back! 20 December 2017 - 14:49:00

It made all the difference after a long day of playing the tourist or visiting friends to be able to come "home" and relax surrounded by a beautiful garden oasis. It was comforting to wake up in the morning to the peace and quiet of the cozy cottage and be able to start the day with a fresh pot of coffee and a relaxing breakfast. Such a huge difference from the experience of staying in a cookie cutter hotel where you have to get completely ready for the day and then leave your room to get decent coffee and your breakfast and then come back at the end of the day, having to a decide where to have dinner with the mob of other travelers. Keith never disturbed our privacy, but was just a stone's throw away if we had questions. The cottage had everything we needed to prepare meals and have a great night's sleep. The location was perfect for a trip to San Francisco to visit Alcatraz, a drive up the coast to Bodega Bay to whale watch or for wine tasting in Healdsville. My wife and I highly recommend staying at this property and will do so again when our travels bring us to this area. 11 May 2017 - 13:59:00
