This 2016 newly remodeled, one-bedroom, 2 full bathroom cottage is an ultra-charming, craftsman style home with magnificent views of the San Francisco Bay. It offers a fully equipped kitchenette, a lovely living room, a comfy bedroom, a full sized bed sleeping loft, a library /TV room and an ethereal work space. Sip coffee or wine from one of the double decks. Stay in to enjoy the view and birdsong or head out for a Bay Area adventure. Mt. Tamalpais State Park trails for hiking and mountain biking are right out your back door. Sausalito, San Francisco, the Pacific Ocean, Muir Woods and the wine country offer some of the endless possibilities for day tripping. This is a place that is both relaxing and inspiring. A perfect writer's retreat (in fact, it was the winter home of a New York Times best-selling author) or for soulful restoration!

I really enjoyed where we stayed. It was quite beautiful, quiet, and everything we needed was there. I had a marvalouse time hiking for 5 days and then coming back to a personal retreat to relax and sleep. 27 June 2017 - 15:12:00

Charming was in the description, but that doesn't even begin to cover it. This place is beautiful and very comfortable on the inside, nice furniture, extremely comfortable bed, a big tv, tons of books to read, and a true cook's kitchen. And the outside, oh my goodness!! I loved the view, the birds, the flowers and trees, the walks on hiking trails that begin right outside the door. Best of all, the owners are wonderful: there if you need them, but entirely unobtrusive. Would go again! (And again!) 28 July 2015 - 14:43:18

A heavenly retreat in the mountainside of perspectives and views. This sweet, charming hideaway nestled above the idyllic community, Mill Valley, with easy access to nearby activities and restaurants is worth your time to relax and unpack your bags. This jewel has all the comforts of easy living with a good bed, a sitting room with great TV, and a small kitchen with the amenities for cooking meals. It provides you with a great library of interesting books or incredible hiking trails for those who like to venture out amongst the hillside views. The owners were accommodating and allowed for plenty of privacy. Marianne was so helpful and caring during my stay, and I would recommend this home away from home to a friend anytime. I will visit again during future travels. Thanks so much. 16 September 2015 - 16:27:01

The fact that this amazing little cottage is the part time home of one of my favorite authors was the original draw. But, let me tell you, it was the lovely, peaceful, GORGEOUSNESS that will bring me back again and again! Sitting high on the middle ridge of Mt.Tam, the air is delicious, the views are breathtaking, the owners are friendly and accommodating, it is comfy and clean. Everything you need is right there. Shangri La comes to mind. I'm not kidding. Muir Woods is 20 minutes away, but honestly, if I never left the confines of the cottage, I would be 100% satisfied. I cannot wait to go back! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I'm head over heels!! 18 September 2015 - 02:03:53

I can't stop thinking about this place and I can't wait to return! High on the middle ridge of Mt.Tam, this lovely cottage is the part-time home of one of my favorite authors. The views of the bay, the mist rolling through the trees, and the DELICIOUS air make this retreat highly addicting! The bird feeders on the deck off of the bedroom attract multitudinous feathered friends in the morning. Every inch is appointed with exquisite taste. The bed is very comfy, the kitchenette has everything you need, and the bathroom is perfect (the floor is heated!). Very close to Muir Woods, hiking trails, the charming shops in downtown Mill Valley, and the top of Mt.Tam. (The hike is easy and the view is breathtaking!) The owners are sweethearts! So helpful and friendly. There when you need anything but totally unobtrusive. WARNING: Once situated in the cottage, you will not want to leave! 20 September 2015 - 15:18:48

A great little retreat with great views of Marin and access to nearby trails to the peak of Mt Tam. If you're even relatively interested in staying on or near Mt Tam you should consider this place. The owners are very accommodating, friendly, and kind. 07 October 2015 - 19:13:24

This Mt. Tamalpais Dream Retreat is wonderful. A short drive from San Franciscos Golden Gate Bridge, this studio transports you a world away - above the clouds, Nearby walks to Mt. Tam hiking trails and a luxurious studio make this a real find. You are located fifteen minutes away from the majestic California Redwoods in Muir Woods National Park and two Pacific Coast beaches are also a very short and scenic drive. The nearby town of Mill Valley is quaint. If this is not enough, then the action and beauty of San Francisco is just a short car ride away. The owners and their dog are your hosts. They have lived in this location for many decades. They are warm, gracious and offer wonderful local knowledge. The Mt. Tam Dream Retreat is comfortable, private and relaxing. Perched high in the Marin Highlands, the studio overlooks the lights of San Francisco and the San Francisco Bay. The Dream Retreat has it all. On the main level, there is a sitting room, a kitchen / dining room overlooking the valley. This studio is full of light sitting above the morning fog with views of stately and majestic California redwoods. This main floor contains a writers den and a separate living room with flat screen TV. The studio had a library full of books to read and many comfy places to just unwind and read. Wireless wifi access was strong. A small sleeping loft with another bed on a third floor in this wonderful studio. The bathroom was well equipped, with heated floors, great water pressure and high-quality towels. Off the master bedroom in the mornings we could see songbirds and hummingbirds feeding. A magnolia was blossoming just off the deck and a fig tree bore delicious fruit. It was hard to leave in the morning (or anytime). This is a great place for a couple. Nearby restaurants are great but we preferred to bring food back and stay as long as possible in this magical hideaway. This is a fabulous place and a great value too. You gotta stay here !!! 18 October 2015 - 23:53:47

We stay VRBO when we travel and our experience at this charming and luxurious cottage was excellent. The photos cannot capture the charm of the cottage or the expansive views from the very livable decks. Enjoy the views of the bay, the bridge, the skyline of San Francisco and the marina of Sausalito all bordered by a colorful variety of foliage. We enjoyed every room of the cottage, they each had their own charm and the newly remodeled bathrooms were very well done. Mill Valley is a quaint, charming and a very walk-able town at the foot of Mt. Tam. There is so much to see and explore from this location by hiking or a 30 minute drive. To top it all off, our hosts were the best, so accommodating and we enjoyed their company. Don't hesitate to book this rental, we will be back. 03 October 2016 - 19:54:21

My wife and I stayed here for 7 nights and thoroughly enjoyed this hillside retreat. Our favorite thing to do was hiking the many trails within walking distance from the retreat. The owners recently upgraded the downstairs bedroom to a very comfy king size bed and full bath with heated floors and a large walk in closet. The kitchenette is small but it has all you need to cook a dinner for two on either of the 2 new redwood decks. All of the furniture is very comfortable and in good condition. The place is much larger than it looks in the pictures. The property in a good climb up winding narrow mountain paved roads on mt. Tam. There are steps to navigate to enter and exit the property. Marianne was a wonderful host, so was buster. Lots of hummingbirds and other birds that come to graze on the many bird feeders. Peaceful utter bliss........Fantasmagoric. 07 October 2016 - 22:31:58

We had a very enjoyable stay. The property is gorgeous with two levels. From the patio on each level, the view is peaceful and serene, with hummingbirds and beautiful trees all around. The bed was so comfortable, and it was quiet for restful sleep. Marianne was the perfect hostess. We hope to be returning soon, and often. 22 September 2017 - 00:32:00

We enjoyed the cottage and all its location had to offer... hiking & beaching at Muir, close location to ferry landing for jaunts into the city, strolling around Mill Valley, and more... all with a fabulous, comfortable home to return to. The hosts are on-site and friendly while maintaining guest privacy. We most enjoyed the cool, quiet evenings & views from the upper deck. 31 July 2017 - 15:36:00

No words to accurately describe how wonderful our stay was; everything was perfect. The house was beautiful, comfortable, delightful, and thoughtfully appointed. The MOST comfortable bed I've ever slept in in my life. Views for miles, perfectly situated, and wonderful owners. Counting the days until we return. Thank you!! (Also, we fell in love with the owner's sweet dog!) 25 July 2017 - 22:51:00

My young adult daughter and I stayed at Marianne's most wonderful place for a week. We have stayed in many VRBO rentals through the years from Maine to Hawaii and mostly in Northern California. This is the best as it is first of all impeccably clean, is located on a wonderful wooded property with views, and the interior offers much appreciated art, lovely furnishings, tasteful window treatments, and exquisite (and fresh smelling) bedding. The house was well stocked and included umbrellas and a headlamp, along with a well thought out study, and simple but more than sufficient kitchen. Marianne's house is in close proximity, however, there were no carry over noises or a sense of lack of privacy. Lastly, we loved Marianne's dog Buster, a good boy who would give a greeting, but would go on his way. Lastly, the locale of this property is such that one has easy access to the city and day trips to other places such as Point Reyes are so easy. Oh, and one can walk out the door and walk/hike too! It was so so nice to "come home" to this truly idyllic place :) Thank you so much Marianne and family for sharing, as you can tell, we absolutely loved this place!!! 13 July 2017 - 14:14:00

We spent 2 weeks in July in this cosy mountain home. The nature is astonishing, the surroundings are quiet and Mill Valley is a safe place. The host Marianne is very helpful and kind. The house is clean and has everything you need. The king size bed is very comfortable. The TVs are high tech. This is a place to relax and enjoy nature. The car ride down to Mill Valley is 5-10 minutes and downtown SF is 30 minutes away depending on trafic. Good for hikers and mountain bikers as well as for those looking for a get away. Highly recommended. 13 July 2017 - 12:44:00

My wife and I stayed at Mariannes cottage for three nights, and we only wish it had been longer. Marianne is a most congenial host, and is most eager to ensure that guests have everything they need for an enjoyable stay. She met us at the agreed check-in time, gave us an introductory tour of the cottage, and even helped us with our luggage. The cottage itself is a comfortable, restful place, nicely laid own and furnished, and well stocked with everything we needed. The upper level of the cottage, where youll find the kitchen, dining area, and living room, is bright with windows. On the lower level youll find the bedroom (with a comfortable bed), master bath (with a so soothing shower head), and an enormous walk-in closet for hanging clothes and stowing luggage. Outdoor decks on both levels run the length of the cottage. The upper deck is open and sunny, with remarkable views, while the lower deck is shaded by trees and is a relaxing spot to spend time in the comfortable deck chair either reading or watching the many birds that visit the surrounding feeders. As lovely as the cottage is, it is the setting that overwhelms. Located near the top of a winding mountain road (though only a few minutes drive from downtown Mill Valley), the cottage is perched on a hillside with commanding views over a canyon to the hills beyond. A few minutes walk up the road leads to an overlook with an arresting view of downtown San Francisco and the Bay. And beyond the overlook, there are connections to the many fire roads and foot trails that weave up, down, and around Mount Tamalpais. A truly magical spot! 31 October 2017 - 14:11:00

We had a great time just a hop, skip and jump from San Francisco on Mt Tam's Middle Ridge. The cottage is very spacious for a couple plus there is another bed in the loft. Great views from the 2 level decks and it's a short walk to the top of the road for an even better view and then you can continue hiking or biking on the fire road. There's a compact but VERY well equipped kitchen, lots of interesting books, and a stack of guide books and maps. Our dog made friends with the owners' friendly dog and wanted to move in with them. We threw a spread over the couch and bed per instructions in case of muddy paws since it was winter. It looks like the owners have a great pool for summer. Cottage is close to their house, but felt private. Not suitable for toddlers or anyone who can't manage stairs but I have a bad hip and it was fine for me. Spiral stair down to bedroom is steep, but short. Definitely recommend this place. If you are visiting the Bay Area it's a great location from which to explore both SF and Marin, or if you live in the City and need a quick getaway like we did. 26 December 2017 - 19:14:00

This cottage is a magical retreat tucked away on the Middle Ridge of Mt. Tamalpais. It has everything one needs for a comfortable and luxurious stay, such as heated bathroom floors, a sunlit kitchen and living area, and one of the most comfortable beds I've ever slept in. It was hard to get out of bed each morning because you could lie there for hours watching the birds play in the fig and magnolia trees. The spacious views from the deck off the upstairs living area are equally captivating. On a clear day you can see to San Francisco! Marianne has created a cozy and beautifully appointed guest house you may never want to leave. You have plenty of privacy but the comfort of one of the most gracious hosts imaginable in Marianne and Art. When you do venture outside -by foot you have your choice of any number of trails that lead up and around Mt Tam. Mt Tam has an interesting history and looms large in the imagination of hiking and literary culture in this part of the world. A 5 minute walk up the mountain you'll find a small bench that provides stunning views of the city. Treat yourself to a full moon rise! There are also a series of steps and paths throughout Mill Valley which lead into town. The town itself is quaint and charming with excellent food and shopping. If you have a car your options are endless. San Francisco is a short and easy drive away or you can take the Larkspur or Sausalito ferry which are minutes away. Muir Beach and Woods are easily accessible as are the wine country and Point Reyes. I intend to visit this area a lot in the coming years and can't imagine staying anywhere else. 22 September 2016 - 09:29:00

We had a fantastic weekend exploring the trails of Mt Tam just up the street. Marianne was an amazing host and was so sweet with our dog. We would stay again in a heartbeat. 02 January 2018 - 00:10:00

We were very disappointed to have such an uggly weather while we love Mill Valley and San Francisco. The property is very quiet and must be most enjoyable by nice weather. Stairs must be taken in consideration. Private parking is appreciated. Everything you need is in the cottage, and above all Marianne is very sweet and helpful. Hope to come back once, but not in March. Enjoy your stay. 19 March 2016 - 11:31:00
