Owners Ed and Birgitta are just wonderful people who go way above and beyond to make sure you have a great stay. They are so friendly , kind , and detail oriented but also very Northern California relaxed people. Their home and the rental flat are beautifully furnished, decorated with only high quality furnishings and kept spotless clean. The garden flat has doors that open onto your own private garden, with table and chairs for outside dining, sun loungers, and an acre of land with gardens, the house, swimming pool, jacuzzi, large driveway, etc. You will sleep well here! The house is located up a big hill, almost a mountain!! So its very quiet, you wont be disturbed by noise! And the bed is so comfy and has great pillows and bedding. I did not hire a car and was able to get around walking, and using local buses. The bus station for the airporter bus and local buses is a 20 min walk. And there is a taxi rank at bus station too, so you always have option of a taxi if you need it. There is a shopping centre with a Wholefoods store just down the road, at bottom of the hill, about 10 min walk. Has various other stores and cafes too. On 4th street there are loads of great cafes, from Italian, Mexican, Puerto Rican, French to Viet Namese. Lots of choice! The smell of the Eucalyptus trees you encounter when you walk up the hill is beautiful, and you smell it all around the house too. The garden is really an oasis. Best of all tho..... Birgitta and Ed! Really great people, cant say enough about them! Enjoy your stay! 12 June 2013 - 20:02:47

My husband and I booked the garden suite as a short escape in the middle of a hectic move with a new baby. We stayed for three nights with our ten week-old daughter. The Loevs were so welcoming and the suite was exactly what we were looking for! Easy to get to but really felt away from it all. The furnishings and the garden are luxurious. We all slept really well, baby included! We loved dining outside with views of the beautiful garden and the bay. We appreciated the pak n play and the guard dog, Bogie! Did great hikes in Deer Park in Fairfax and China Camp. Also, great (hilly) running right out the front door. Highly recommended to explore Marin and also if you need a few days respite. 19 July 2013 - 13:39:09

My husband and I enjoyed a week at this lovely and comfortable suite. We need a comfortable bed in order to have a good night's sleep and that is exactly what we got. We had our own patio and beautiful garden with table and chairs where we could enjoy the delicious coffee provided along with a light breakfast we obtained at the Whole Foods which was nearby. A bowl with a variety of delicious fruit and a nice bottle of wine greeted us upon our arrival. More importantly our hosts' greeting was warm and helpful. They are very interesting and very welcoming people. When our time came to leave it was as if we were having to say good-bye to old friends. I strongly recommend this lovely getaway for relaxing, sightseeing, and visiting family in the area. 09 September 2013 - 01:57:03

My husband & I had a relaxing & comfortable 2 week stay at this appropriately named luxurious garden suite. Location was perfect as we were visiting family in the area, but, it was also close to 101 freeway, so, easily accessible to many other parts of Marin & the Bay Area. Owners, Ed & Birgitta, could not have been more accommodating. We are staying there again in 4-5 months & are very much looking forward to it. 24 September 2013 - 01:53:23

We came to stay here with our two girls. Birgitta and Ed were such gracious host and truly opened their home up to us. The guest quarters are very private and boast its own garden and patio. The landscaping was just gorgeous in late March. Because it was too cool to use the pool and hot tub, we did not use these amenities. We plan on going back during warmer weather so we can truly enjoy the outside of this beautiful estate. 08 May 2014 - 01:47:53

I stayed at Birgitta's Garden Suite while caring for my adult son who had just been released from a fairly lengthy hospital stay. It was a stressful time and this home was just what I needed to relax in the evenings and early mornings. The gardens surrounding the suite are spectacular and the little apartment is sumptuous in its decor and VERY comfortable. Most importantly, the owners are incredibly kind and welcoming. I was alone and they even brought me up to share their Easter family dinner. Another night, Birgitta brought down some wine and cheese--as she knew I was very stressed and tired. The apartment is also in a lovely location in the hills above San Rafael--with nice walking possibilities and beautiful views. I highly recommend the Garden Suite. 17 June 2014 - 16:36:02

I used to live in San Rafael and brought my 2 grown nieces to experience the beauty of Marin and a visit to San Francisco. The apartment was perfect for our needs and the girls commented about how comfortable and home-like it was. The apartment is loaded with books and the living room has plenty of space to get cozy and cuddle up to read or watch a good movie. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and the apartment opens to the outdoors perfectly. The bathroom is elegant and the bedroom opens right onto the patio. We grilled our dinners and ate at the larger of the two tables on the patio. We returned each day from our excursions around Marin, wine country, and San Francisco to relax in the hot tub and swim in the pool located on the other side of the house. The owners truly welcomed us as guests, and encouraged us to enjoy their beautiful property. I was concerned about limited kitchen facilities as I always prefer to prepare meals, but a small refrigerator/freezer, the outside grill, and plenty of glasses, dishes, and cooking utensils allowed us to enjoy a dinner at home. The location couldnt be more convenient and is very close to Whole Foods and Trader Joes. Easy access to 101 gets you into the city or heading north to wine country. And if you love the outdoors, you will be amazed at the hiking, running, and mountain biking trails Marin has to offer! We didn't want to leave. Thank you Birgitta and Ed! 01 July 2014 - 02:36:14

Birgitta and Ed are by far the most gracious and accommodating hosts. We have rented vacation properties on VRBO on many occasions and we were nothing short of impressed by our two week stay in Birgitta and Ed's home. It is a private oasis, we felt as though we were staying in Hawaii. The photos do not do this property justice, the landscaping is beautiful, the pool is wonderful and the suite is comfortable. It was just the right amount of space for my husband, daughter and I. Birgitta, Ed and their family are the kindest people we've ever met! They went above and beyond to ensure that we were comfortable, they even made arrangements to help us with a crib and highchair and provided toys for our daughter to play with. We will without a doubt be back to stay again and are so thankful that the Loev family has come into our lives. We are grateful to have created lasting memories and made new friends. Much love, the Gareau family. 05 August 2014 - 15:10:17

Sumptuous would not be too strong a word to use for this lovely home. The garden and pool area were gorgeous and the home decor was beautiful and yet extremely comfortable and user friendly, even down to a little reading nook in the corner! The library is rife with all kinds of wonderful books, and the TV has a vast array of channels from which to choose. The hosts could not have been friendlier or more helpful. The kitchen area is extremely small, so one shouldn't expect to be cooking in any major way. Speaking personally, I don't go on a vacation so that I can cook, so this bothered me not at all. There were three of us and we had plenty of living space. Our teenager slept on a portable bed in the livingroom, which he reported to be comfortable. Our bed was great, and the master bedroom door opens into the garden, enabling one to enjoy the evening breeze whenever one wants. And coming from the desert, we wanted! All in all I would say there's nothing not to like! 21 August 2014 - 18:14:34

My retired Navy husband and I stayed with Birgitta and Ed while visiting our niece in Sausalito. The location worked out perfectly for us- close to everything: the ferry, Sausalito, Sonoma and many, many wineries, shopping, the city, the Highlands, Muir Woods, the beach and more. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The guest house was beautiful, spacious and comfortable and our hosts couldn't have been more gracious. We very much enjoyed the change from staying in a hotel and much preferred being out of the city. We enjoyed ending the day by spending time with Ed and Birgitta by the pool chatting and enjoying a glass of wine. We instantly felt very welcome and left feeling as if we had made friends to keep in touch with. We would love to return again next time we are in the area. 13 September 2014 - 02:28:23

The owners of this little apartment are absolutely delightful-the best thing about the rental! Location was perfect for us, too. We stayed for two weeks, visiting family nearby, and the only downside for us was the tiny sink in the 'kitchen' which has an undercounter fridge, microwave and one conduction burner. It really was difficult to wash up in that sink. The lack of laundry facilities might be a problem for some, although the owners told us we could use theirs, but we did washing at our family's house. The bed was very comfortable, shower was great and we were very comfortable there. San Rafael is a nice town, and walkable, but quite a climb up the hill going home--but then, there are beautiful views! Wifi signal was spotty and pretty weak, and there are A LOT of decorations. 15 October 2014 - 18:27:53

We had a wonderful week at Ed and Brigitta's. The apartment's luxurious details, private quiet setting and panoramic views was a bargain. Be sure to dine at Terrapin Crossroads and enjoy the music. Thank you Ed and Brigitta, we'll be sure to book early next year. 03 December 2014 - 20:58:14

During my stay, I enjoyed beautiful outdoor views and a cozy luxurious interior. There are many areas to sit back and relax, and the bathroom with its heated floor and garden tub was amazing! The location is great for exploring the sights in the San Rafael area. Birgitta and Ed, thank you for your wonderful hospitality! 29 January 2015 - 14:28:40

My sister in law and I had a relaxing stay at our home away from home. Ed & Birgitta were so welcoming and down to earth people. This San Rafael property is the perfect place because it is close enough to go into San Francisco or to Napa Valley in a short amount of time but when you are done with the crowds in the city you can come back to the house and it is peaceful and quiet. The pictures on the site don't do justice to the gardens around the property and the peacefulness you will find there. It is only a 15-20 min drive to cross the Golden Gate Bridge into San Francisco, a 25 minute drive to Union Square and Pier 39, a 5 minute drive to the Ferry at Larkspur Landing, a 4 minute drive to 4th street in San Rafael where there is some great food places and boutiques to shop in. Birgitta even recommended "Francis Nails" to us in San Rafael for manicures and pedicures and she was spot on! We got Mani's and Pedi's and were there almost 2 hours, they didn't rush us through, just pampered us and did a great job! Also, if you have celiacs or are gluten intolerant.....go into a restaurant and ask if they have items because I found that lots of places aren't listed on for example but lots of places were very educated, friendly and helpful about fixing something for me to eat. Another place that is great to see is Fort Baker. Just take the Sausalito exit and drive through the picturesque downtown area of Sausalito, stop for a meal, then meander on through the hills to Fort Baker. There is a wonderful view of the bridge from there and you will be right on the water below the bridge! Gorgeous! 03 July 2015 - 16:51:09

This place is a little piece of heaven tucked away on a sweet San Rafael Hill. The estate is gated and safe. The grounds, which, along with everything else, Brigetta designed, are gorgeous. Brigetta and Ed are the owners. They're nice and helpful, and never intrusive in any way. I was alone, and they made me feel very comfortable. They invited me into their home several times, and were very gracious. I stayed in the apartment for six weeks, going through a major life transition. It was a sanctuary for me, and helped me heal and move on faster. Walking the grounds is uplifting. If you leave the curtains to the french doors in the bedroom open, you can fall asleep and wake up looking at the lovely garden. There is a beautiful sitting area on the ground, with a fountain, that would be perfect for a wedding. Or a honeymoon, or both. It's very romantic, and photogenic, if you're looking for just the right location. I wish I had been married there. The bedroom is cozy, bed comfy, and when you're relaxing after you're swim or jacuzzi, I'd suggest you just hang out on one of the lounge chairs and watch the stars. It's peaceful and serene, yet Whole foods is only a few blocks away. I would highly recommend this place as an alternative to a 5 star hotel. It's just over the bridge to the city, and I found the price reasonable, it's spacious and Just has great energy. Don't forget to take advantage of the jacuzzi tub in the large, gorgeous marble bathroom, with a shower large enough for two. Very romantic. Safe Travels. 08 July 2015 - 03:15:46

This was the perfect haven for my husband and I while we helped our son's family move from one home to the other. We brought our young grandchildren over to the pool while their parents did the moving. Brigitta noted that the little one didn't have water wings so she offered those which was a "lifesaver"! She and Ed were such great hosts And the apt was a delight. 23 August 2015 - 16:59:12

Better than a five star hotel!!! Both the price and the beautiful guest house makes this a very wonderful vacation home. It was the perfect amount of space for my son and I. Comfortable living accommodations and gorgeous landscaping on this vast property were exquisite. Everything you need is within five minutes of driving time. It is also in the center of all of the sights to see. The views surrounding the property were heaven on earth. Birgitta and Ed were both, by far, the most gracious hosts. They went beyond the scope of being helpful and friendly. We will miss them terribly. It was very hard to leave and I will return next year. 02 December 2015 - 22:20:32
