  1. My boyfriend and I took my kids to Costa Rica from April 2nd to the 18th. We rented Casa Bella from the 4th to the 17th. We arrived in Playa Chiquita later in the evening Fred the property manager was there to meet us and was very help through out our trip. The house was exactly as advertised but the yard was even more then the pictures showed. Its quite a large lot with lots of privacy. There is only one neighbor who was very helpful but kept to themsleves unless we needed something. Casa Bella is well maintained and clean. Fred came by every few days to take any laundry we needed done and returned it the same day unless we had plans. The deck was a nice place to enjoy the view as well as the animals that came to visit. The monkeys in the morning and we even had a sloth stay with us for the last week. Even with all the privacy the house is located with in walking distance from a grocery store and many restaurants. As well as two beach accesses. The beaches are beautiful for tanning, snorkling, horse backing riding, and swimming. The restaurants we enjoyed the most were Jungle Love and Maxies. Maxies is at Manzanillo which is just a few kms up the road. Well worth the drive. Although thoses were our favorites we ate at many different places from Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo and never had a meal we didnt enjoy. Fresh fruit trucks come by on the main road a few times a day. You can hear them right from the house as they come by. Fresh fish trucks come by but we found a place in Puerto Viejo that had a good selection of fish daily. My kids are 12 and 13 and we were a little unsure about taking them to Costa Rica to stay in a rental house rather then a resort. By day three we were more then comfortable with them staying at the house well we went for lunch or to the beach if they didnt want to come. They even walked the local store a few time by themselves. There is also a lot of Tours suitalbe for small kids right to the elderly. Fred helped us book alot of our tours as well as arrange taxi's ect. He even does a few tours himself. We didnt rent a car but we did rent bikes the last week and ventured a little further. Taxi's are about $5 to Puerto Viejo which has everything from night life/shopping to banking. Most things are within walking/biking distance. I would recommed the Rafting tour its a cheap exciting way to make your way out to Playa Chiquita. Over all the trip and stay at Casa Bella was amazing! I would recommend it to everyone!!!!! 20 April 2012 - 19:39:35
  2. What an incredible location. The house and property were immaculate, with an abundace of wildlife. Everything required was either within walking distance(the most in amazing beach:surfing/snorkling/swimming) or you could get on a bicycle and ride to town for an outstanding(very short distance) time of dining, relaxing, dancing,whatever........ Fred, the property manager was absolutely the most sociable, helpful, friendly, not enough words to describe. Fred met me at the airport, guided me, was just always there to help with anything. He made my whole trip with his friendship, guidance, and positive energy. He will be a friend for life Thank you Fred for everything I totally recommend this property. Without a doubt. I am going back for sure 03 May 2012 - 21:40:36
  3. An amazing house. Both the house and property were everything we where looking for, in our first day a sloth welcomed us at the entrance, we had a huge amount of different kind of animals visiting us every day. The location of the house let us have everything we wanted within walking distance and the neighborhood is very secure. We loved Fred the property manager, he is very helpful, friendly and available when you need him, nothing would be the same without him. We really recommend this place to others in order to have an amazing Caribbean experience! Thanks Fred! 24 May 2012 - 18:11:32
  4. Writing a review for this place is almost too difficult, being that they only give us to much space to do so, but I'll give it a try! My husband and I have been to this area of the world a couple times, and we wanted to bring our extended family to show off this place we may one day call home. We were looking for a place that met the needs of 8 different people so they could have trip of a lifetime. We talked to a few vacation rental places in the area, and finally settled on this little beauty, really thanks to Fred the caretaker, and let me tell you, THIS IS THE PLACE! Our family absolutely loved it. There are plenty of bathrooms and bedrooms for all personalities to have a little space, but at the same time, it allows for closeness and the amazing 'together' time we all had spending hours on the deck just talking and taking in the amazing garden that surrounds the house. The house is clean, comfy, rustic, but not too rustic so you still have hot water and a full working kitchen. The location is great for those who want to be centrally located in the area, with Puerto Viejo a few minutes away, and all the fabulous beaches all within walking distance or a quick drive. I actually told my husband that when we do move to the area, this house is what I'd like my house to be modelled after. A nice size, with an opened up living area on the top floor, a beautiful deck area that is open to from the living and kitchen area, and of course, the garden. Fred took our family on a little adventure day, and they absolutely loved him! Such a gracious and kind person, with a smile and help to offer whenever we needed it. Oh, and Fred knew that my husband (who was actualy only my boyfriend when the trip started) was going to propose and surprise me with a wedding while on the trip, and he helped my husband in so many ways with that, and we are so greatful. I suggest anyone going with a big group rent this amazing place. Your family will never ever forget their time there! When we left, and Fred was wishing us farewell, I said to him, "It's never good bye, just, see you later"...I truly hope that is the case. 04 November 2012 - 21:34:44

What a tremendous experience we had at Casa Bella! It far exceeded our expectations and it was as beautiful as the pictures portrayed. The grounds were splendid, lush, and wildlife abundant. There was plenty of room for everyone. We were two families (2 adults and one child each). Every day brought us a new encounter with wildlife. You truly are set back in the jungle . . . and fall to sleep each night to a cacophony of jungle sounds. Simply amazing! Fred Mines, the property manager made us feel more than welcome and took care of all our needs. He was just a phone call away and lived just minutes from Casa Bella. He is full of local knowledge and can arrange anything for you. We rented bikes for the duration of our stay and were able to cycle everywhere we wanted to go. Lots and lots of great food. The locals are friendly and interesting. It was a laid-back and warm community of all kinds of people. There was never a dull moment. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Casa Bella and in the village of Playa Chiquita. All neighbouring towns are just minutes apart Puerto Viejo, Cocles, Playa Chiquita, Punta Uva and all offer good food and wonderful sights. The beaches are absolutely beautiful where the jungle meets the water. It's a great place for families. One of our most memorable trips thus far! We can't wait to go back! Thank you, Fred, you were a wonderful host. 20 April 2013 - 13:15:35

We had a great time, rented the new 2 bedroom house. There were only the 2 of us, but we liked having the extra space for our luggage. We spent quite a bit of time out on the deck, sometimes cooking our own meals, and sometimes just hanging out and enjoying the surroundings. I was able to take several photos of flora and fauna right from the deck, and in the yard. Plan to get up early with the howler monkeys, unless you're a real sound sleeper. For us, this was no problem, and we were even able to watch the monkeys from our bed one morning! We saw parrots, pileated woodpeckers, toucans, monkeys, and other wildlife right there at the house. Walked to the beach, rode rental bikes up to Puerto Viejo, you can get anywhere you want without a car. Many great places to eat within walking distance, as well as the grocery store, El Duende Gourmet Market. Darren and Erinn were great hosts, we would not hesitate to stay here again! 07 March 2014 - 03:25:55

This is such an amazing place to stay! I can't say enough great things about the property or Erin and Darren the hosts! The pictures do not do the house justice which I know doesn't seem possible! We had the trip of a lifetime and this was the perfect location for our home base. We biked to Punta Uva, Puerto Viejo and many of the great places right in playa Chiquita! Thank you Erin and Darren for the unbeatable hospitality! 06 April 2014 - 13:45:31

My wife and two boys (8 and 11) stayed at Casa Bella for 10 days over spring break, and loved it. The buildings on the property are gorgeous. Far better comfort and luxury than we ever would have expected, and all the amenities we could want. There were lots of places to sit and relax whether we wanted sun, shade or hanging in a hammock. The property itself is beautiful and so well maintained. Our sons loved the gardens and had lots of fun watching for sloths and monkeys in the yard. One morning in particular we got to watch a group of howler monkeys playing in the trees. We were surprised by how much was on offer in the town. Lots of interesting people, places to eat and beach to walk. We spent lots of timing biking around the area and swimming at the beach with the kids. The family favourite was the Lazy Mon where we could sit and enjoy a cool drink while the kids played with groups of kids on the beach. We also had a great time at the adventure zipline through the jungle and surfing lessons. Our hosts we so nice and accommodating, and really did everything they could to ensure our stay was enjoyable. We would certainly recommend Casa Bella to our friends. 04 October 2014 - 18:02:43

I travelled to Playa Chiquita with my husband, 2 children (9 and 12) and parents. We rented the main house at Casa Bella with my immediate family on the main and my parents in the studio above. This proved to be excellent accommodations with everyone having more than adequate space and privacy. The house is a gem - the sliding doors on the main open completely to create an indoor/outdoor living space that is spectacular. The hammock chair on the corner of the deck is a prime spot for relaxation and bird/sloth/monkey spotting. There is no end to the amenities that Playa Chiquita and surrounding area has to offer. We divided our time between relaxing on the deck or local beaches and seeking adventure - river kayaking, chocolate plantation tour, surf lessons, horseback riding on the beach. The chocolate facial at Pure Jungle Spa was a highlight for my daughter's birthday. We didn't expect our vacation to Costa Rica to include exceptional cuisine - we were thrilled by the local selection. Pita Bonita, Pura Gula, Jungle Love - all a short walk away - offered a range of options for every palate. The local grocery store offered great selection along with fresh croissants and pain au chocolat baked daily by the owner. Playa Chiquita is a wonderful community full of friendly locals. Casa Bella hosts Erinn and Darren were gracious and exceeding helpful. I certainly recommend this property to family and friends and hope to return. 02 January 2015 - 03:37:48
  10. My family and I the pleasure of staying at Casa Bella for three glorious weeks in November. We rented both the main house and the casita. The minute we arrived we felt like we had come home. The homes are beautiful, comfortable and well equipped. The property is absolutely heavenly. Words cannot describe our experience here. Sitting on the deck each day was entirely surreal. Sloths, monkey's, toucans, parrots and humingbirds were just some of the daily visitors. The location is perfect. Minutes to walk to all amenities (restaurants, groceries, beach and bar). Bikes can be rented to venture out a little further if you feel the urge to. Puerto Viejo is nearby and arrangments can be made for a variety of adventures from there. For those who are looking for a vacation away from the resorts without sacrificing ease and genuine comfort/hospiality I cannot recommend this home enough. Erinn and Darren are amazing hosts and I cannot wait to return. 16 February 2015 - 15:49:03

Casa Bella was the perfect house for me to settle for six weeks this winter. Casa Bella is located in the wonderful town of Playa Chiquita, offering all you need within walking distance. I rented a bike and headed out most days to explore the many beaches and communities along the coast. It was wonderful to live without needing a car! Living in this lush jungle environment, soaking in salt water, eating local fresh food, daily outdoor living, I have never felt healthier. Erinn and Darren have very high standards of property maintenance and care for their guests with utmost attention. I loved the property, the environment, the amazing and constant flow of wildlife, the adventure opportunities, and the mix of people from all over. My first Canadian Snowbird experience gets five stars!!!! 19 April 2015 - 01:55:42

Who could not want to stay in the jungle like setting where the the jungle meets the Caribbean Sea. We were on the family holiday so stayed in the big house and two of the smaller cabins. We mainly used the big house for gatherings and meals. Our accommodations were clean and well equipped. Erinn and Darren were wonderful hosts and made our visit extra special. There are lots of great restaurants within walking distance. The beaches are spectacular. Casa Bella has lots of lush vegetation so we saw so much tropical wildlife right from our balcony. Many people pay big $$$ to see what just passes through this amazing piece of paradise. We would love to come back! This is the first time we have gone from the Costa Rica resort experience to a vacation rental. We are so glad we did and look forward to returning at some point. 12 January 2016 - 00:13:47

We went on a family vacation and lived in the big house...it was spacious and comfortable. Erin and Darren were gracious hosts and went out of their way to make our stay extra special. This was the first time we rented a cabin and I was apprehensive about it...but it was the best decision ever. Would definitely visit again! 21 January 2016 - 23:57:40
  14. Really wonderful and private place tucked up a jungle lane, would stay there again for sure. For the extra $20 per might, take the main house as the casitas are much smaller and don't have the same outlook. Basically located right in the jungle with all kinds of animals rolling through the property. Howler monkeys make their presence know every day, birds, butterflies, and everything else. Lots of restaurants within walking distance, as well as beaches, Punta Uva was our favourite for bobbing in the waves or boogie boarding. Ocean was the best temperature and the water was clean and clear. The hosts were very attentive and they have everything you need for cooking on site, thanks to Erinn and Darren for the great stay! 27 March 2016 - 21:07:40

We just returned from a week and a half stay at Casa Bella. We had a wonderful time. We had arranged for dinner upon our arrival (which I highly recommend after a long day/days of travel). It was delicious and helped us settle in and feel right at home. We slept soundly every night to the sounds of the jungle and woke every morning to the howler monkeys howling in the trees around the property. We saw sloths on the grounds too! The house is well thought out and has everything we needed for a comfortable stay. It is clean and well kept. We were 8 in the main house and 2 in the casita. The yard and grounds are beautiful and private. You feel very safe there. Erinn and Darren are available for questions and help when needed and provide a wealth of information about restaurants, excursions, beaches, etc. The area is fun to explore. We loved the Jaguar Sanctuary and the zip line tour. We had a vehicle for part of our stay which was nice for exploring Cahuita and Manzanillo. We also rented bikes and enjoyed getting around that way as well. The food we ate at every restaurant was delicious the entire visit and the local folks were friendly. We were traveling with our children, 8 & 12 and another family. It was a perfect location to gather and spend time together relaxing. Thanks Erinn and Darren for everything you did to make our experience so memorable-including meeting both of you! 30 December 2016 - 03:08:27

I arrived on march 1st of this year with 9 of my friends and we were all very impressed with the place! Even though we got there pretty late, Erinn was there to greet us and make us feel welcome. We were able to see Shirley, the sloth, on the tree behind the casita with a baby! It warmed our hearts. There is an amazing home of montezuma oropendola birds just to the side of the property that awakes when the howler monkeys do and I couldn't get enough of those!! The insects and wildlife are just inches away from you at all times. Luckily, we didn't have any problems with that inside of the casitas though!! The community is tight and very helpful! The little shop on the Main Street was a good place to grab drinks and delicious croissants in the morning (they are made fresh daily), the pizza place across the main road was delicious too!! Rent bikes right there to get you to any one of many beaches and restaurants. A favorite was Caribeans, a coffee joint with chocolate at its center focus, made locally. Only a 15 min bike ride! Erinn and Darren couldn't have been better hosts. They helped with absolutely anything that we needed or asked and have a wonderful home! Thanks again!! 11 October 2016 - 20:08:30

We stayed 8 nights with our 3 kids (5, 3, 1 yrs.) in this beautiful house in the middle of the jungle and felt so much at home. We used only the ground floor of the main house which was spacious enough for the 5 of us. Thanks to the handy sliding doors you can almost completely open up the living room towards the terrace, creating a huge wooden platform... and the floor is just great to walk on! Both inside and outside are perfectly equipped with comfy chairs, couches and hammocks... and then youre out there in the jungle! 360 of wildlife around you, only a few steps set back by a beautifully maintained garden. The property is set back from the main road far enough to offer tranquility and making us feel completely safe, and still everything is close by: good restaurants (the best dinner during our 4 weeks in Costa Rica was at Pura Gula!), a well stocked supermarket and a nice beach can all be reached by foot. You dont necessarily need a car, most people get around riding bikes, but we enjoyed having our car... its defintely easier with kids and also helps to spontaneously decide on what/where to eat (highly recommended for chefs: fresh fish from the pescaderia in Puerto Viejo!) or which beach to go to (our favourite: Punta Uva). The owners provide an extensive set of information when confirming the booking (regarding the house, POI, restaurants, and so on), and continued to be just as helpful during our stay. They live on the other end of the property and were always happy to assist in case we needed something. After one week in the central valley / Arenal area and two weeks on the Pacific Coast, we were not sure where to stay on the Carribean side (Cahuita? Puerto Viejo? ...). For us, Casa Bella with its surroundings was the perfect spot! Puerto Viejo is very vibrant, but also touristy and it can be a bit messy... okay for a dinner, but then we were happy to return back to our retreat :-) Ill never forget the early morning hours with groups of howler monkeys fighting for the "Im-the-loudest"-trophy, innumerable singing birds, the first rays of sun coming through the giant trees, hummingbirds, agoutis and sloths stopping by... and me just smiling out of one the hammock chairs with a cup of fresh coffee in my hand :-)))) 05 February 2017 - 13:24:03

There were 10 of us total that stayed from 12/27 - 1/5. 8 in Casa Bella (main house) with 2 in the Casita. Our objective was to be dropped in to the day-to-day life of Playa Chiquita and that is exactly what happened (w/a little TLC). Erinn scheduled transportation for the entire group (which was the way to go) and stops on the way - including a wonderful place to eat and that was our first taste of food yet to come! We arrived at the property about 9:30 and were welcomed with open arms, a home cooked meal (Erinn - you are great!) and a stocked refrigerator. The place was spectacular and we were in the jungle! The houses were great! I was a bit hesitant about the 'hardness' of the mattress but slept soundly every night! No need for many blankets given the night time temperature and there were fans if you wanted to use them. The kitchen was stocked well enough for us to cook for our group with no problem. We had a starter pack of coffee, plenty of water and other items to get us on our way! I did take some spices from home and would suggest that just so you don't have the expense of purchasing them. Most time was spent on the very large deck playing cards, laughing and just having plain fun! Our hosts were even able to come play with us! There was plenty of seating, hammocks and room for work outs. Everything needed was provided: tons of information and our hosts were over the top with suggestions and answering any questions. They shared some of their favorite places (Tasty Waves......Briton!) and provided contacts for our needs (cabs, bikes, etc). I can't say enough for the experience! The grounds are meticulous! A lot of love and care has gone into this property. We woke every morning and heard howler monkeys throughout the day. There was the resident Sloth mom (Shirley) with her baby, other sloths, the playful monkeys, goudy's, toucans and all sorts of other animals around! It was amazing! Of course, the dog was the nicest thing ever! We walked, rode bikes all over, some went zip lining, drove the scooter to Panama. Went to Bread and Chocolate for breakfast (AWESOME). Not enough space to keep going! The beaches....Playa Chiquita, Playa Cocles, Punta Uva, Playa Negra..oh my - you can walk forever. Any direction you go is nothing short of beauty! I could rant on and on but here's the simplest message.....GO! The property is great! The people are great! We'll be friends for a lifetime! We will be back! PURA VIDA!! 11 January 2017 - 00:22:43

We had 8 relaxing nights at Erinn and Darren's property in Playa Chiquita. The main building has high quality construction and a modern, open design. The new pool really sets this place apart. We had some in our group who never wanted to leave to go to the beach because it was so easy to settle in around the pool all day. You hear the howler monkeys every morning, and see agouti in the yard. After the first couple days we saw the monkeys nearly every remaining day, as well as toucans and a sloth. The flowering plants all over the property attract constant hummingbirds. The kitchen is large and functional, and each bedroom had a nice bathroom. The water in this area is high in calcium which does cause some troubles for plumbing so it's good to be prepared for minor water issues, but that would occur any place in the region. The showers had plenty of hot water. Standard sunscreen does turn white clothing and sheets a shade of orange so do try to find the mineral-based sunscreens they recommend. The owners are from Canada, extremely friendly, and a constant source of information and advice on options for the area. After exploring Puerto Viejo to Manzanillo, Playa Chiquita was the best location along the stretch for our family group with little kids. The home is set back and a bit removed from the main strip which is nice for privacy. Playa Chiquita has a few good restaurants and a great little grocery. It seems to be an area with quite a few ex-pats and caters to tourists well. The beach is a bit of a walk but it is the prettiest section of coastline we saw in the area, with nearshore reefs that offer some protection for children playing in the water, make for a more visually interesting shoreline, provide close to shore snorkeling if the water isn't too rough, and a few nice surf point breaks if there are swells. Most days started calm and glassy, and got windy and wavey in the afternoon. The house is open air with screens which I loved and helped with the sense of really being in the jungle, but for our November trip it was hot. And there will be some insects. Overall we loved the place and didn't see anything else as nice in the area during our time, particularly considering the pool. Thumbs up. 16 November 2017 - 05:02:00

We stayed at Casa Bella for the month of January. Our family of 5 (3 kids aged 10, 7 &2)stayed in the ground floor of the main house and we had extended family join us in the other living areas. This was such a great way to have a family reunion as we all had privacy but could see the others when we wanted to. The indoor/outdoor area is perfect and spacious, it's a great place to enjoy the sounds of the jungle. The walk to the beach is easy and convenient. The beach is fantastic, Erinn helped by letting us know where the safest place was for the kids to swim. While in Costa Rica we took a couple of trips to Boca Del Toro and then to Arenal. Both trips were amazing and I highly recommend them. Casa Bella was a great home base to be able to come back to. We really enjoyed the area and everyone was really friendly and helpful. Puerto Viejo is fairly touristy but in a laid back more bohemian way. We rented bikes and this was a great way to get around. Erinn & Darren were so helpful and informative. We weren't initially sure about how we'd feel about having the owners live on the property, but this turned out to be so convenient for us. When we had an issue with the internet, Erinn addressed it promptly. They are very knowledgeable about the area and had great recommendations for things to do and restaurants to go to. We went surfing with Herschel - loved it! Taco Tuesdays at Tasty Waves, very yummy. And it was very helpful to be connected with drivers - we used Rigoberto frequently and he was great. Going to Costa Rica for a month was our first big family adventure and it couldn't have been more amazing. I know that we made amazing and lasting memories for all of us. 17 April 2017 - 19:09:00
