About listing

Come stay at The Colby House, our family's vacation home for 80 years! Sleeps 9 in 5 bedrooms including 1 King, 2 Queens, 1 single twin, 1 double twin room. Tennis court and fenced 1 acre yard with oak trees. Come play tennis under the oak tree canopy, on the lined asphalt court in great condition. Musically inclined? Play our piano. Need to stay in touch with the office or access the web? We have wireless (wifi) access to high speed internet and unlimited long distance phone calls are provided on the 'land line' to our guests. Each room opens out to the expansive deck, for independent and private access. Great windows front and back and 'dutch doors' - open the top half and let in the light and air and music of the birds. Enjoy the cool morning and evening air under your down duvet! The location is ideal for a peaceful stay but also supports an active lifestyle for adults and kids - extended families love it! Located across the street from the Inverness school and playground. Walk on the trails or down to the Inverness General Store, gift shop and restaurants. Drive to nearby Tomales Bay State Park swimming beaches, including Shell Beach or out to the Point Reyes Lighthouse or the special ocean beaches. Kayaking and sailing are popular on Tomales Bay (kayaks can be rented). Other quality restaurants are nearby in Point Reyes Station and Olema, just a few miles away. If you are like us, you will want to spend some of your time in the very private, park like setting, playing tennis, climbing trees, playing board games or reading books in the cozy living room by the fire or on the deck shaded by oak trees. Pick blackberries in the summer, particularly in late July and in August. That formula has worked for five generations in our family, enjoying the magic of Inverness since 1914. The main house and tennis court date back to the 1890s with the rest of the house added in the 1930s. The master king suite over the garage has a bath/shower. The main bathroom next to one of the queen bed rooms has an updated shower. Washer and dryer in the separate garage. Many of our guests become 'regulars' who we welcome back year after year. We hope you will find our property worthy of becoming one of your special vacation spots, enjoying Inverness and exploring the Point Reyes National Seashore. Note - NO TV! Keeping with our history of conversation before the fire and board games, we don't have a TV set. However, the strong wi-fi network allows you to stream video on your portable electronics. The result? Board games, puzzles, tennis, walks and conversation replace the time that you are used to spending with the TV! (My favorite is Scrabble!) Here are some of our guest’s comments: • “A delightful place…..I hope to come back again….” • “……in harmony with nature….” • “……so lucky to have spent time in this amazing home in this beautiful place…..” • “….cooking delicious food together and gathering around the round table……” • “….a place where time slows enough for you to catch up.” • “We had a super family gathering. All of just loved being here. This is a fabulous place to be. Our stay has been delightful.” • “Our dog was in heaven!!” • “PS – The stars were fabulous.” • “Upon walking inside, one can smell this home’s history. Rich and comfortable. Warm and full of genuine laughter. The place is full of good things. Well built, confident and provocative. It leaves you wanting to read its history. Thank you for the protection against modernization.” • “We came looking for peace and tranquility, and things green and growing. They were here in abundance!” • “This house is really remarkable…..the symbiotic feeling of the building and natural elements blending together……but perhaps even more amazing are the memories that are made here. A couple of days of rain encouraged us to get to know this place and one another a bit better. We congregated around the fire and did puzzle after puzzle together, lounged and talked and played board games – our family’s winter holiday was one we will always treasure. We found ourselves speculating about the Colbys and the history of this space, how special the family must be who came together here and have opened its doors to the rest of us.” • “Our kids had a blast exploring in and around the house – they are not happy about leaving!!” • “I enjoyed the space to dream.” • “We loved our stay at Colby House; it is the quintessential Inverness house – cozy and comfortable. We enjoyed the piano. We appreciate the history of the house and the way you have kept things the way they were. The light and the quiet are delicious – we don’t want to leave!” • “Had a great time and the kids not only survived having no TV but also had a great time.” • “We loved this mysterious big old house, big decks, big windows, big glorious tennis court, big trees, and big generous loving sense of being cared for! Unforgettable.” • “….what a fireplace!” • “We really enjoyed traveling back in time.” • And a few comments from the younger set: • “Thank you for letting us stay here. I was very excited!! But there is no TV.!!” • “We had a wonderful time. We climbed on the tree, played in the tennis courts and built forts.” • “My sister and I had a lot of fun exploring and playing ping-pong. Thank you.” • “I do not want to leave the tennis court. I want to stay here and I really love tennis. It was my first day playing tennis ever. I liked playing the piano. Your place is really fun. We went to the beach and I dug the biggest hole that I had ever seen.” Keywords: Vacation house with tennis court, almost a full wooded acre with oak trees, near hiking trails and in the lovely resort town of Inverness in West Marin County

Our review was perhaps colored by the heavy rain, which kept us indoors most days. Unfortunately the fireplace is not well designed and very likely to smoke up the single communal area. We live rural and build fires most of the year, so we do know how to use a fireplace. Perhaps a fireplace insert would solve the problem. We couldn't use the fireplace at all, since several of us are asthmatics. Colby house is quaint and cozy - it must have been lovely in its day - but it's somewhat run-down. The kitchen is pretty small, but does have lots of utensils, pots, pans, and small appliances. The sink and cabinets need a cleaning and general overhaul. The owner and Innkeeper were very cordial. Please note: there is no dishwasher. One burner on the nice new gas stove was only partially functional. We did very much enjoy the old Steinway piano, which appeared to have once been a player piano. My brother is a professional musician and complimented its sound. It added a lot of warmth to the surroundings. We did not have a problem with heat, though it was depressingly cold when we arrived. We understand and appreciate radiators, and the portable space heaters were adequate, once the chill was off the house. The beds and linens were good. The layout is not good for bad weather, since all the bedrooms are in a sequence, with entrances only from adjoining bedrooms, bathrooms or the outdoors. The "1/2 bathroom" listed, between the last two bedrooms, is a tiny cubicle with a toilet. The bedrooms accessing it each have tiny corner sinks. The one bathroom in the main house (for 7 people) is light and roomy and has a nice shower. The furniture in the main room is quite old and run-down, although the 6 Adirondack chairs were quite comfy. So everything is actually functional, and since we are a close-knit, informal family, we did enjoy the house. But people looking for granite counters, en-suite bathrooms and such should definitely look elsewhere. The garden is lovely and the surroundings very quiet. There is no view. Access to Inverness is quick and easy. (The Raven's Roost, where the other half of our group stayed, is at the end of a long and tortuous road.) We enjoyed Inverness, breakfast at Blackbird and dinner at Saltwater (excellent trout). 02 January 2013 - 04:12:40

The Colby House is fantastic. Our experience was great. I organized a party for my girlfriend at the Colby house and everybody who attended and stayed loved the place. We were able to BBQ and enjoy the large yard and outdoor space. The large living room provided a great space for everybody to congregate in the evening. The rustic feel of the older construction is really cool and adds to the charm of the house 04 April 2013 - 03:48:40

A group of friends and I booked the Colby House for a weekend getaway in Marin, and it exceeded our expectations! The circulation of the home was unique in that each room had it's own private entrance from the large wrap-around porch. The living room was quite large and had a wonderful communal feel to it. The pictures of the kitchen do not do it justice, there was plenty of counter space and a wonderful updated stove. We all found the home absolutely charming and cannot wait to return soon, my only complaint would be that the beds were too comfortable! Thank you to the owners of the Colby House for opening up your lovely home to us, it was a pleasure. 10 April 2013 - 16:43:48

This review is LONG overdue. My boyfriend and I have been to the Colby House several times and I am just now taking the time to gush about it. We live with our dog in the lovely San Francisco neighborhood of Cole Valley, but nothing compares to the peace and quiet of this wonderful retreat. After visiting a number of times with different groups of friends, it has become clear that there is something for everyone at the Colby House. The mornings are quiet and peaceful and best enjoyed with croissant and coffee from the Bovine Bakery in Point Reyes Station. As the weather warms up in the afternoon, our group tends to spread out around the property. Two or four people might be engaged in a friendly tennis match while others relax nearby in a set of Adirondack chairs; the most culinarily-inclined guest(s) prepare dinner in the kitchen or at the barbecue; the outdoorsy folks are hiking Mount Vision with the pup; and the studious members of the group might be inside reading or working (using the strong wifi connection). While working on the weekend is less than ideal, having wifi makes it a breeze and there is no better setting in which to get it done. And the nights are even better. This beautiful old house lights up the surrounding woods, giving it a surreal glow after sunset. Everyone is inside, cooking, eating, or drinking wine by the fire. We play board games or just let the conversation meander until it is time to get up and do it all over again the next day. We have also been to the Colby House during the rainy winter months. While the tennis court may not be available, this is a beautiful place to spend a rainy winter weekend. The fresh smells of the forest combine with the nearby aroma of real wood-burning fires and it is almost a blessing to be forced indoors to really enjoy this beautiful house. The rooms are rustic and charming, furnished with comfortable beds, original tables, and antique lamps. I never see much of a reason to leave the property anymore, except to hike or get food at the market, but it is definitely worthwhile to take a drive around Tomales Bay, to eat BBQ oysters at Hog Island, to see what is going on in Point Reyes Station, to visit the Point Reyes National Seashore, to kayak around the bay, or to visit one of the area's natural beaches. 01 July 2013 - 19:14:55

THANK YOU for a wonderful couples retreat! The Colby House is no 5 start swanky resort . . . it is as advertised - historic, rustic, peaceful, quaint. Think camp for adults. Comfortable rooms, shared baths . . . all open out onto a gorgeous deck. The family room, with comfy chairs circled around a large fireplace were awesome. Two nights there we went into Point Reyes's Palace Market for groceries, and enjoyed a home-cooked / grilled meal at the Colby House. A well-stocked kitchen, nice gas grill, beautiful deck and awesome family room with fire place for dining provided a fantastic place for us to get away from things, unwind and unplug, and socialize. One afternoon we enjoyed 3 to 4 hours of tennis on the private, secluded, shaded court. The Colby House provides the perfect launching point for a day in Sonoma (Gloria Ferrer recommended for sparkling wine, olive oil and more), followed by Hog Island Oysters. The Saturday morning farmer's market (and Bovine Bakery) in Point Reyes is a must, as is a day trip to the Point Reyes National Seashore, lighthouse, sea lion habitat, and hiking. Dinner at Stellina in Point Reyes or Saltwater in Inverness are excellent choices. A trip into San Francisco is also do-able . . . an hour to hour-and-half drive and your in the City (we did this one day, too - Fisherman's Wharf, etc. - if you go, the Slanted Door is an awesome lunch spot!). Lastly, Napa is about 1.5 hours drive away. Highly recommend Pine Ridge (1.5 hour tour), Silver Oak (for tasting), Mondavi (tasting class), Inverness (just to see it - don't bother drinking anything!). Make reservations at Ad Hoc in Yountville - a must for lunch. Kerry was superb in providing assistance and any help requested. I loved our stay at Colby House!!! Highly recommended. 01 July 2013 - 01:34:06

We loved Colby House. Relaxed, spacious, and lovely. A wonderful place to stay for a large group; and the owners were so helpful. Highly recommended. 05 August 2013 - 17:32:24

Great old school "cottage." Wonderfully quiet and serene! Even though it rained and tennis was out, we and our two dogs thoroughly enjoyed ourselves! Looking forward to better weather on a future stay and lots of tennis! 25 December 2013 - 17:36:50

Expansive deck, yard, tennis court, rope swing, tree for climbing, ping pong table, toy and game cabinet - all made this house a wonderful place for our multi-family get-together. The series of bedrooms, each opening to the outside deck, made it easy for everyone to have a private space and yet be able to get to the kitchen, or living area, or bathroom, without disturbing others who wanted to sleep in or nap. The very large living area was ample room for everyone at once - adults to converse or play games by the fire, while little ones played legos in the corner, while others chilled out with a book on the window seats or played cards at the table. The kitchen was adequate. We would have enjoyed more counter space in the kitchen, as well as upgraded cookware, knives, etc. as we like to cook together, but as it was, it didn't really hamper us. We liked the rustic, non-luxurious, practical nature of the furnishings and felt like we didn't have to be extra watchful of the little kids. The beds and bedding we VERY comfortable. The new washer and dryer were handy and allowed us to pack light. The location was great for exploring all around the Point Reyes/Marin area. 30 December 2013 - 21:09:50

The Colby House lived up perfectly to its description. We were looking for a house that had personality and was tasteful, in an historic way and provided an old-fashioned kind of setting for relaxing. The house is beautifully rustic with lots of exposed redwood, a great central fireplace and Adriondack Camp-style rooms and kitchen. If you are looking for a modern cookie-cutter place with all the modern features, then this is not the place for you. But if you want a place that is simple but classy in an old-school way, then you will like the Colby House. The large yard and tennis court gives the place the feel of a mini estate and the great room and large deck provide ample space for group relaxing. Most rooms except the one above the garage are laid out in a railroad fashion but can be accessed directly via charming dutch doors along the deck. We loved this house and will no doubt return. 05 April 2014 - 16:45:41

We had such a nice family reunion at the Colby House. It is a perfect spot for our group to come together. We had many rounds of tennis on the court, wonderful family meals off the bbq, and hours of conversation on the porch. We explored the town of Point Reyes Station and indulged on oysters. Some of us took a walk out to Chimney Rock and the Point Reyes Light House while others found a beach for swimming. Our only complaint was the time was too short. 18 August 2014 - 19:29:22

Colby House was the perfect place for our large family reunion. It is a big property and though surrounded by other homes, the trees kept it very private. The deck, lawn and tennis courts kept the teens and young adults busy during the day and the large family room with its big fire place was the comfortable for everyone to gather, play cards and relax in the evening. Bedrooms were comfortable and clean. It was easy to get to, had plenty of parking and a few minutes ride to the water as well as Point Reyes Station. 02 August 2015 - 04:49:25

Our family reunited here to celebrate major milestone birthdays. The Colby House fit every need - it was spacious, yet very easy to keep track of where the children were. The tennis court was not only fun for tennis, but also for the young ones to ride their bikes around. The living room sofa and chairs were very comfortable, and the room had a very cozy atmosphere especially enlivened by my daughter's piano playing. There is a separate building that has a ping pong table and a king bed on the second floor, providing some extra privacy. We were very happy with our stay and highly recommend the Colby House to others! 24 August 2015 - 04:35:10

If your idea of a wonderful time is curling up on a couch in your pjs, mugs of tea in hand, fire crackling, and your friends and family around you, this is the place for you. Whether gathered on the deck or in front of the fire, this house is spacious, relaxed, inviting and utterly comfortable. Great beds. Quietest place on earth - so peaceful. Tennis court added delight for the heartier amongst us. We will definitely be returning - absolutely loved its charm and character . 24 August 2015 - 16:51:56

What an incredible home! It really helped create the perfect sense of warmth and community for our two immediate families during our wedding weekend. Kerry was incredibly helpful prior, during, and after our stay, making the entire process seamless. We can't wait until we can return! 08 October 2015 - 02:51:43
  16. Our happy place:) On this trip we discovered that the path running alongside the house connects to an intricate network of walking paths all over Inverness! Can't wait to explore more on our next trip. Love the new chef's stove and dish washer added without compromising the loveliness of the original old kitchen. Another wonderful stay at the Colby House! 21 September 2016 - 20:40:43

Casual, spacious, private, enclosed camp-like setting was ideal for active 2, 3 and 6 year olds and comfortable for the six adults. Fires in the large stone fireplace provided warmth and cheer to the large main room when not enjoying trips to Point Reyes beaches, ping pong or time on the tennis court or deck. This well-used, comfortable family home was a fine choice for us. Thank you. 25 October 2017 - 02:52:00

We loved staying at the Colby House. It is the perfect house for a family get away - no TV and lots of games and activities for the kids & adults to be together. 21 July 2016 - 21:06:00

This spot reminds us of an old lodge back east. Super relaxing. No TV, no radio, but wifi. Perfect combo. A real getaway with wonderful things to do in Pt Reyes/Inverness. A perfect spot for a family vacation! 09 August 2016 - 05:23:00

A great place, rain or shine. Comfortable in all the right ways without compromising the great old funkiness. Easy to be inside and a great amount of private outdoor space. Inverness itself is of course a perfect little village. So happy that places like the Colby House are still around and shared. Thank you so much. 30 November 2016 - 00:55:00
