Nestled among redwoods, hills and canyons, Mill Valley is only ten minutes north of the Golden Gate Bridge and City of San Francisco, yet less than one hour from Sonoma and Napa Wine Country. Historical Mill Valley has a unique village charm as well as its human environment-uniquely combining tranquility and liveliness, privacy and community involvement. Starting in 1905 with The Dipsea Race, the first cross-country race in the country, Mill Valley has a rich cultural tradition with the Mountain Play in 1913, the Mill Valley Fall Arts Festival in 1957, the Marin Theatre Company, a professional regional theatre in 1966, the Mill Valley Film Festival in 1978 and the 142 Throckmorton Theatre recently revived, although in existence since 1915. Re-opened in February 2012, after a lengthly absence, is the Sweetwater Music Hall located in the remodeled Masonic Hall right down town. Mill Valley is surrounded by the picturesque City of Sausalito, 10 minutes south and the Town of Tiburon 10 minutes east with Angel Island State Park only a one mile ride (via Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry), all on San Francisco Bay. Although Mill Valley is close to San Francisco, it is adjacent to the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and only 10 minutes to the Muir Woods National Monument and Tennessee Valley Trail head, 20 minutes to Muir Beach, or Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, 30 minutes to Stinson Beach and less than an hour to Point Reyes National Sea Shore. Mill Valley is only a 2-1/2 hour day trip to Monterrey and Carmel and four hours to spectacular Lake Tahoe or Yosemite National Park.

Steps lead you to this charming Mill Valley cottage that opens onto a lovely patio. I found the kitchen easy and appreciated the big dining room table and comfortable beds not to mention the excellent Wifi. The owners, Sally and Mike, were very gracious and helpful. It's an easy walk to Beth's bakery, good cappuccino, a grocery store with an excellent wine selection, and several fine restaurants. Spectacular walks starting in Mill Valley which could lead you all the way to Muir Woods or to the top of Mt. Tam. A walker's paradise - perfect climate too! There was parking across the street and a relatively easy drive into San Francisco for city activities. We would love to return!! It felt like home after a month. 11 April 2015 - 00:30:55

Having lived 5 years i Mill Valley long time ago, we wanted to find the old M.V. charm and we certainly found it here with Michael and Sally. At the end of fairly steep stairway we found a beautiful home and a lovely terrasse. And right at downtown MV wiht nice shopping and good restaurants. A very nice stay for all 4 of us. 26 April 2015 - 14:18:07

Great place! Clean, fully equipped, good space. Beautiful patio and garden. We rented a car and did not use it the entire stay. Walk to everything! Sally and Michael are close by if you need anything. We'll be back! 14 May 2015 - 03:06:46

We absolutely loved our month-long stay at Sally and Michael's warm, modern home in the redwoods. Not only was the interior perfectly appointed, but the garden was a sanctuary of birds of all kind and the perfect place to enjoy outdoor living. This home is full of delight. As you walk up the outside steps you open a gate and enter into a sunny lush garden, complete with waterfall, bird feeders, outdoor furniture and grill. The surprise continues when you enter the bright, sunny living room in which every window offers framed views of oaks, sycamores, and redwoods or the lovely garden. It made the perfect retreat after days of excursions around the Bay Area. We fell in love with Mill Valley as the charming walkable village that spread out below us. Thanks to the personal suggestions from Sally and Michael, we experienced all the arts and culture and exceptional dining that was just a few blocks away. It's also an incredible location for day hikes, trips to the beach, and just a short drive to SF for museums and city attractions. Our walks down nearby Cascade Drive was like being in Muir Woods, only it was a 10 minute walk from our home. Dinners and brunch at Mill Valley Beerworks were among our best meals during our stay. Experiencing the Throckmorton Tuesday night comedy only added to the local charm. We count this as one of our favorite vacation destinations, and the memories we made will be etched in our hearts and minds. Thank you so very much, Sally and Michael, for being such thoughtful hosts! We hope to see you next year, if not sooner! 05 August 2015 - 23:58:22

My husband and I just spent two months in this sweet bungalow on the hillside in Mill Valley and I miss it already. I ooze with compliments about the owners Sally and Michael who made us feel right at home and quickly became friends. The house is old and and full of charm, lots of light coming in the french doors, we felt like we were living in a tree house with all of the modern amenities. The gardens are beautiful and peaceful with a variety of birds and squirrels to entertain outdoor moments. Sally brought treats to welcome us and Michael kept us in firewood being we were there for the winter months to keep us cozy and warm. The home is in a great location where one can walk to restaurants, movies, parks and hiking trails. We plan to return one day soon as we created so many wonderful memories and that is the best recommendation to be share. 5 Star Rating and big smiles! 15 March 2016 - 21:26:26

As my girls and I ascended the stairs up to the cottage, I could feel my shoulders soften and an immediate sense of peace. We opened the gate to a big, sunny deck, filled with comfortable deck furniture, which we used daily for meals, reading and grilling with friends. I looked around and noticed the beautiful gardens, which Sally and Michael had obviously put a lot of TLC into, complete with a "fairy garden" a babbling waterfall, and twinkling lights at nightfall. It was heavenly! The cottage was clean, warm, quaint, comfortable, and cozy . It had every amenity one could ask for, and more. Tastefully decorated with simple elegance, sunlight flooded into each room throughout the day. The charming town of Mill Valley was a stones throw from the cottage, which made this the ideal location... filled with arts, culture, coffee shops, yummy bakeries, chic boutiques, parks and a wide variety of delicious restaurants. You are also within a short drive from stunning day hikes, Muir & Stinson beaches, Tiburon, Sausalito and San Francisco. It's about as good as it gets - the access to everything is endless! I have stayed at numerous VRBO's and this far exceeded any expectation I had. It was simply the BEST vacation, with Sally and Michael making us feel at home from the get-go. Not only did we find a slice of heaven in this magical cottage, but found lasting friendships with Sally, Michael and their beautiful family. We truly have found our home away from home... With our heartfelt love and thanks...we will be back SOON!!!! 07 July 2016 - 18:08:16

We were lucky to find this perfect home for our month long stay in Mill Valley. So close to town and within walking distance to stores and restaurants. We immediately felt at home in this beautiful property! Gardens and private deck felt like a hilltop oasis. Perfect spot for relaxing and summer grilling. Close to hiking trails and day trips into the city or to the beach. Michael and Sally were so welcoming and helpful. So hard to leave at the end of our stay and we hope to return again on our next trip to Mill Valley. 30 July 2016 - 15:10:52

This lovely vacation home boasts extraordinary attention to detail. We were lucky enough to stay for a week when the gardens were in full bloom. The garden... and the home itself ...have been meticulously planned and decorated. Part of the reason why we like to stay with VRBO is so that we can cook our own meals if we like, and this kitchen had everything we could possibly need. A few major supermarkets are minutes away by car, but by far it is more fun to walk right into the Mill Valley historic district and shop at the local market. The skillfullly decorated rooms had simple yet interesting accent pieces . Beds were new and comfortable and complete with pretty high end linens. A hop skip and a jump from the Golden Gate bridge made going into the city a breeze, while some of our party popped up to Sonoma for the day. Our hosts, Sally and Michael made us feel welcome and cared for. We were looking for a "home away from home" and this absolutely exceeded our expectations. 11 August 2016 - 20:28:54

We had such an amazing stay in Mill Valley. The apartment was perfect for our family. We could pop out to restaurants or the shops whenever we wanted which were only a couple of minutes down the road. There is a lovely little deck with an "enchanted garden" where we could watch the squirrels and birds which was our favourite morning pastime. Sally and Michael are the perfect hosts. They really look after their guests so well and made us feel so at home! We ended up extending our stay for an extra week because we didn't want to leave. I would highly recommend staying here. 17 April 2014 - 06:18:15

We really enjoyed our stay--beds very comfortable, and kitchen well stocked with everything we needed for our 3 days. Very fun to look out on the trees and the patio area in the back was restive and so pretty. Michael and Sally were great hosts and recommended restaurants and hikes in the area. Would definitely stay here again. 04 December 2017 - 17:42:00

We enjoyed the property in Mill Valley very much. The house is nicely situated in walking distance from cute boutiques, coffee shops and groceries in Mill Valley. Also it's a very short drive to San Francisco, Muir Woods, the wine country, etc. We made many day trips and then enjoyed our evenings in the house. The owner has created a lovely outdoor space and birds love the feeders and are fun to watch as they come and go. The house itself is comfortable for 5 adults. We had 6, which was still do-able with the trundle bed. The kitchen has plenty of cooking supplies and dishware. The home is very clean, simply decorated and has all the amenities needed including a washer and dryer (though we didn't use them). Touches such as throws were really nice to make for a comfy home feel. Also, we were there the week after Christmas and the home was decorated for the holiday and we liked that very much. There is ample information on things to do in the area in the home as well. The only thing I wish the house had was a closet in the 3rd bedroom, but we made due with the empty dresser. There is a very large closet in one of the bedrooms with plenty of hanging space, so we shared that and stored our luggage there as well. The owners live just below the home, but we never saw them and they left us to enjoy our time without us feeling "watched". It was very nice, we really loved our stay and would probably consider returning if the chance arises. Such a beautiful location and so much to do in the area. 05 January 2018 - 19:29:00

We had a wonderful stay in this amazing, aesthetically pleasing house. Sometimes there were quite a few of us as my sister and her grandchildren were with us for the initial five days. After that, for nearly two weeks, it was just my husband and me. In both cases, we were delighted with the layout, the amenities and the pure beauty of our surroundings, both inside and out. Sally and Michael were welcoming and quick to respond to our (few) requests. We cooked many meals in the well-stocked kitchen, and enjoyed reading and painting on the deck amongst the greenery when the weather was good. We walked to town for coffee, for dinner, to the craft supply store and the bookshop. We were able to set out from our doorstep for hikes in the redwoods. Being so close to San Fransisco was a real plus. Thank you for sharing this remarkable corner of the universe. We certainly hope to return next year. 21 April 2017 - 16:47:00

Our son and his wife were visiting home for the holidays (from London) so my husband and I decided that this would be a good destination spot to spend some family time together. We werent disappointed one bit, and were able to have a very relaxing and special Christmas in this beautiful house. It couldnt have been any better! The house was lovely to spend time in, and we enjoyed watching all of the finches flying and hopping about in the yard/deck that sits outside the living room and bedrooms. The town of Mill Valley is basically right at your doorstep, so we took advantage of being able to walk downtown to various restaurants and shops. Michael and Sally, the owners, were great, also! 27 December 2017 - 19:55:00

I came across this listing while looking for a vacation rental near San Francisco for the holidays. Overall the biggest draw was the location--right in the town of Mill Valley. From the start, Sally was extremely helpful with making sure we checked in and were able to get right inside on our first day arriving in town to unload our luggage. She was available throughout our stay to message for any needs we had. The residence is located up a stairway from the street among towering Redwoods just a very short walk from many restaurants and shops. This unit is upstairs (of a two-story home) and is on a hill so it really just seems like one unit, and it is extremely quiet--both inside and out. It is very private, perfect for a family. You'd have to experience the home for yourself, but it has a very calming vibe. You can sit outside on the couch in the gated area and watch several species of birds flutter around to the feeders, and even enjoy the friendly neighborhood cat that comes around every now and then. The inside of the home is gorgeous. The hardwood floors are comfortable and well worn. The couches and beds are extremely comfortable. The appliances are up to date and work very well, including the tv and wifi connection. I especially liked the different guides of things to do in the area as well as historical information about Mill Valley, and I read many of the books around the couch on a few rainy days. Overall I want to graciously thank Sally and Michael for such a wonderful stay and would recommend this stay to anyone looking for an extremely relaxing getaway in a picture perfect little California town just a stone's throw from San Francisco. 10 January 2018 - 03:03:00

We have been coming to Marin for years and this is the best option for staying more that a day or two. Everything we need: close to downtown Mill Valley (lots of restaurants and shops), close to San Francisco ((only a few miles from the Golden Gate Bridge) and close to exercise (walking the many vertical trails of Mt Tam). Sally and Michael are wonderful, the house is comfortable, the setting in the redwoods sheltered and shaded: we love it. We've stayed before and we have plans to stay again! 03 May 2016 - 20:52:16

Our family of 2 parents and 3 teenagers stayed here for Thanksgiving. We loved the charming character, and it was cozy but not too small - even though we didnt take advantage of the beautiful deck. Sally and Michael were wonderful and thoughtful hosts. Also, the location couldnt be better - a short walk to downtown and beautiful hikes. 26 November 2017 - 16:51:00

The house was beautiful and the host is very nice but she kept coming up into the house uninvited to check on things. We found this to be quite strange and somewhat invasive. She was never unfriendly, we were just trying to have a private family vacation and her coming into the house to check in about twice per day felt like an invasion of our space. The house is gorgeous. No complaints at all. 19 November 2015 - 15:51:00
