About listing

This charming property centrally located in Tucson 10 minutes from the University of Arizona offers a private walled garden and a long front porch where you can sit or dine outside and enjoy the mountain views. The porch faces a large garden with majestic saguaros and a variety of citrus trees and native desert plant life. Enjoy the nonstop bird action and take a dip in the pool or jacuzzi. This house was part of an artist's colony that was originally constructed in the early 1940's when this part of town was still completely undeveloped with virgin cactus and the lush desert oasis character that defines Tucson. As Tucson evolved, the artist's colony was subdivided, but this property remained a rare 2/3’s acre lot that preserves a desert feel right in central Tucson ! We have kept the Tucson spirit alive in the house with antiques and art and a garden that still has a wild character to it. The house sits on a little hill and is completely surrounded by a six foot fence, so it floats somewhat above the neighbourhood and gives unobstructed views to the north and east of the nearby Catalina mountains and foothills. A truly unique experience of an 'old Tucson' gem in northeast central Tucson that gives a feeling of privacy. Sit on the front porch and enjoy the view of the Catalina Mountains, or take a dip in the luxurious stone-decked pool. The giant saguaro cacti, and we have four jumbos, are the main attraction of the garden (and one of the main reasons we bought the house!) They are ancient and majestic, and 150 years old plus. The saguaros and mediterranean trees, orange and lemon trees and roses invite birds of all sorts to this quiet natural sanctuary, where all the best Tucson attractions are at your fingertips. Also enjoy the luxury beds inside designed for a perfect sleep. The property has a main house and a guest house. The main house has two master bedrooms, each with a king bed and its own attached bathroom with shower. There is a smaller bedroom with a queen bed and closet without an attached bathroom. However there is a third bathroom with its own shower in the main house off the living room. Each bedroom has its own door that opens on to the front or back garden. Hence four bathrooms total. The guest house has a king bed, living room with its own cable tv, outside sitting area, and kitchen (refrigerator and microwave and seating area) The guest house has its own bathroom with shower. Entirely walled, the property protects small children and dogs from wandering off the property. Access to the property is through two remote controlled/keypad operated entry gates. The pool and oversized jacuzzi can be heated upon request and subject to weather conditions for an additional charge, see rates. In the wintertime we advise just heating the jacuzzi. The side patio has a Weber propane grill and bar/seating area. 200 channels of Cox-provided cable television, broadband WiFi throughout the property (ethernet cable provided as well), DVD player, and a CD/tape stereo are provided, along with a decent library of CD’s. There is a large private library stocked with a variety of nonfiction and fiction titles. Not to mention a sizeable collection of Betty and Veronica and Archie comic books for the young ones. Nest thermostat controlled heating/air conditioning in the main house via a powerful Trane HVAC unit recently installed. There are various sitting areas around the property, including a sitting area in front of a Mexican cheminea for outside fires. Wood is provided, mesquite, eucalyptus, and white pine. Ideally located just minutes from the University of Arizona, La Paloma and Lowes Ventana golf courses, the Tucson Tennis and Racquet Club, Refkin Tennis Center, Gem Show and Spring Training venues, it is also close to some of the city’s best restaurants and shopping places. The house is 5-10 minutes from the Riilto Wash bike path, the longest bike path that cuts for 15 miles plus through the center of Tucson. We find biking on the streets around the house and over to the shopping/restaurants on Campbell very easy as the streets are unusually wide and have very little traffic. Its a 15-20 minute ride to the University of Arizona campus. A cyclist's paradise! Bike to the Riilto Park Saturday farmer's market or to the Roasting Sage Coffee shop. Select grocery shopping at the Rincon Market /AJ's/Trader Joe's and the city’s best farmers’ market at St. Phillips Plaza. The new (and massive!) Whole Foods at River and Craycroft is 10 minutes from the house. Upscale dining options include Vivace, Hacienda del Sol and Acacia restaurant. And local favorite El Corral. Don't miss the antiques on Country club ..., and Sammy's Sonoran hot dog stand at Country Club and Grant. Perfect for families with children. The large pool, big enough for laps, is designed to safety codes with surrounding fence and closing child-proof (5 and under) gate. Convenient, affordable, and accessible day care options within ten minutes of the address. Night-life at the historic Hotel Congress, Rialto Theater and Centennial Hall’s fine arts performances will keep you more than entertained. When you’re ready for adventure, take a day trip to Mt. Lemmon, Sabino Canyon or Saguaro National Park. You will love the confort, privacy, and convenience of this wonderful Tucson vacation getaway. It is a quiet, private property with surrounding gates, centrally located, and has efficient & prompt property management. Make sure you understand the layout of the house because we had a grandmother walking through our bedroom to use the bathroom in the middle of the night. Take a good look at the pictures because it feels like you walked into a garage sale...nothing matched. We were there in December during a rare cold spell and the guest house never really warmed up with the two space heaters (and the solid cement floor was like ice). Don't try to run the space heaters and charge a phone while watching TV because you will pop the circuit breaker - and don't do this at midnight otherwise you'll be hunting in the dark to try to get the breaker back on so you'll have heat for the night. 22 January 2016 - 19:57:00

It was obvious the owners take pride in the property and we noticed that the moment we drove up the drive. Personally, I really admired the property's gate structure and a hand-crafted, wooden door is fantastic! While the weather was too cool for us to take advantage of the pool and hot tub, that area is beautiful and would be a nice spot for relaxing in warmer weather. There are comfy beds and clean linens provided. Not something we take for granted but find really welcoming. We loved the house and the way the property has been landscaped. It is really charming and so relaxing and comfortable. The owners have done a great job with it. It's clean, airy and inviting. My wife and I found our routine quickly and enjoyed our stay very much. With the fruit trees, Saguaro and other regional plants really setting off the yard, it's prime space for attracting birds. This made for great early morning coffee and conversation on the porch while the sun was rising to warm the air. You'll see sunrise and sunset on the Catalina Mountains from this porch. The big rocker was my favorite seat but there are plenty of comfortable spaces on a big western-style, rambling porch. We shared the house with our two adult kids and each of us had plenty of personal space when needed. Together, we all really enjoyed the opportunity to sit beside the fire at night, share meals that we prepared in the kitchen, or end the evenings with a look up at the stars. It was great to spend the time together in this peaceful and quiet setting. The location is convenient to central Tucson for restaurants, site-seeing and shopping. Not far away are two of our favorite places, Beyond Bread and Ike's Coffee, and at the same time we were just minutes from Sabino Canyon hiking and access to areas beyond Tucson. We also made a fantastic discovery on this trip, The Tucson Tamale Company. If you love tamales, you'll find this place on Broadway and if you're like us you'll be ordering them shipped back home after seeing them made and enjoying the flavor. If you're looking for restaurants with a broader menu, look for the new Acacia Restaurant on Skyline or the Old Pueblo Grill. Both are easy drives from this house. We had a great week at this Tucson getaway that's so close to many of our favorite things and offers a wonderful place to gather and enjoy time together. 05 February 2011 - 14:59:43

My girlfriend and I stayed here with 3 other couples for a wedding weekend. In short we're coming back to this house for our next visit to Tucson. The location is central and convenient to the U of A campus, restaurants, as well as the airport,Gates Pass, Mt. Lemmon, etc. The house is comfortable and clean with nice bedrooms and a very functional kitchen. The pool is fantastic and the landscaping is beautiful. The patio is awesome and very relaxing as you can soak all of this in over an outdoor meal. We enjoyed all of this during our down time. As I said, we'd gladly come back, so it comes highly recommended! 31 May 2011 - 17:05:54

My family and I (8 total) really enjoyed our stay at this home. The house is well maintained, clean, comfortable and in a safe neighborhood. Everything worked fine, and we slept well in the plush beds. Close to the University of Arizona. The owners are easy to work with and made us feel very welcome. No hesitation in recommending this home to future guests. 01 October 2011 - 16:21:17

Four of us shared this house while we spent a week working here. Although we were unable to take in the sights of the city and the surrounding area we did not feel cheated because this delightful little property made it seem like a vacation. We especially loved spending time on the porch admiring the garden while we drank coffee in the morning or ate dinner in the evening. The house is cozy and the furnishings are eclectic and fun. It felt like we were reliving our lives when we were children in the 1950s and 60s. Tom, the property manager, was very helpful and friendly and the homeowners made us feel welcomed. We would definitely stay here again. 19 October 2012 - 01:44:31

We could not have found a more perfect home for our family to gather in celebration of my sons' graduation. The location was perfect for what we needed, the bedrooms accommodated the 8 of us, plus a three year old comfortably, and it turned out to be the perfect place to relax and enjoy each others company. The house is surrounded by fencing, with a coded gate as an entrance. Very private and quiet. Once you enter the property you are greeted by the sound of many birds, with rabbits sniffing about an array of incredible cactus and other desert plantings. The pictures do not do it justice! This was like having a botanical garden at your doorstep. Even more breathtaking was the fact that this "garden" provided the foreground to the mountain range surrounding Tucson. Beautiful any time of day or night! The patio stretches the length of the house, views no matter where you looked. The pool was beautiful with it's tile and surroundings. Large enough for laps, deep enough for diving, and safe for our 3 year old. The weather was warm, so I think all of us took advantage of the water. The house itself is one story, lots of light, with traditional southwestern tile, and wood ceiling. Everything was in excellent condition when we arrived. We liked that the home had a lot of personal touches. Many books, and quite a collection of artwork, much of it original. We enjoyed looking at it all, each of us having our favorites. The home made us all feel very comfortable. We chose to eat in every night, even though there are many restaurants close by. The kitchen, gas grill, scenery, and seating made it too easy to stay in and do our own cooking. Tucson has a wonderful selection of grocery and specialty food stores, all of them pretty close to this home. The owners of the home were easy to communicate with, always responding to my inquiries quickly. I felt like they enjoy this home, take pride in it, and would like others to enjoy their stay. I have already recommended this property to friends, and will continue to do so. We hated to leave, but may visit again! 26 May 2013 - 19:12:54

We had a wonderful stay here and would definitely recommend the house for its location and charm. If we ever rent a house here again, we'll definitely return. The grounds were perfect for exploring native vegetation, but still had a grassy area for play. The porch area is a wonderful place to hang out and grill. The pool was perfect - good size, well maintained and the waterfall from one pool to the other was a fun effect. The guest house allowed my brothers family to have their own space. The two large main bedrooms are separated, providing privacy in the house, also. The third room is next to a large one a great place for kids to be close but have their own room. There were many toys and extras for all to play with including two saddles to pose on and even cowboy hats to set the mood. The location is right in town close to many restaurants and stores, yet the enclosed yard and mountain views made us feel like we were in our own saguaro desert world. The owner and caretaker were always available and responsive to any need. Everything we could ever have wanted was provided for in the kitchen and in the house. If youre looking for a convenient, central location with a desert feel and mountain views, this is the place. 21 October 2013 - 17:00:41

The perfect getaway. The house was eclectic yet completely modern. Three bathrooms in the main house was a plus for six girls that we traveled with. The house had every amenity we could hope for. The beds were comfortable to the point of luxurious, which was a pleasant surprise. The heater was much appreciated on the cold nights. We used the gas barbecue pit to grill one night and had a feast! The jacuzzi was a definite highlight. The grounds were charming and completely enclosed so we felt like we were a world away from everyone. The groundskeeper attended to our every need and could not have been nicer. We will definitely come back the next time we are in Tucson. I am brutally honest in my critiques and I cannot think of one thing lacking in this house. Hats off to the owner. 24 January 2014 - 03:31:14

We drove to Tucson from Austin, Texas and met our son and daughter-in-law, who had driven from the San Francisco area, for four wonderful days in Tucson. The house was just as pictured, and the yard was even better than advertised. Our kids have a dog who loved being able to roam around the yard safely. The fence provides total security. Wish we had been there a little later in the year, because the pool looked wonderful. We had a few minor issues with the house, and the property manager was very responsive as was the owner. We would definitely recommend this lovely home. 05 May 2014 - 21:50:16

We had a wonderful time at this house. The beds were very comfortable, the house very livable and we loved the pool and hot tub area. We enjoyed using the nice gas grill while playing some bocce ball. We truly enjoyed the cool evenings sitting around the chimaera looking at the stars. Located in a neighborhood close to stores, restaurants, golf, tennis courts and parks with walking trails. Lots to do in the area. The owner was very quick getting back to us with any inquiries we had and his helper in Tucson answered any questions immediately.Would go again if given the chance. 06 March 2015 - 00:54:20

This house has the best porch in Tucson!! It runs the length of the house and faces a desert landscaped yard. We had quail, rabbits and squirrels (yes there are squirrels in the desert!!) come right up to where we were sitting on the porch. What a great way to start your daya cup of coffee and desert wildlife entertainment. The house itself was extremely quiet and perfect for us and our extended family. It was a charming quiet and secure house that had convenience to everything that we wanted to do in Tucson. I was the perfect "home" for our wedding weekend! 26 March 2015 - 22:13:42

I came from out of state rented this house for my 60th birthday. I had not seen it in person beforehand but was very pleased when I arrived. It was spacious, nicely furnished and had a lovely garden. My transactions with the owner were professional and correspondence was always promptly returned. The property manager was accommodating, available and friendly. I hope to stay at this rental again. Two green thumbs up on this one, folks!! 28 March 2015 - 22:49:28

Such a great place to stay...the birds and lizards where so cute! We had such a great time! The property manager is one of the nicest people I have ever met. My cousins and I will cherish this place and our time together for a very long time. 23 April 2015 - 02:52:42

This home and casita are in the NE corner of Tucson. The birds are everywhere and the home is well stocked. I can suggest this home for a large group. 09 April 2017 - 23:15:00

From the moment we drove through the gate we were delighted to see cactus in bloom. Even though the home is in the city you feel like you're in your own desert oasis. Sitting on the porch every morning and evening was such a pleasure. Watching many birds making their spring nests. Enjoying the pool or creating something in the funky, well stocked kitchen was a hoot too! Over all this place was just what the doctor ordered! Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven in the desert with others. 04 May 2017 - 11:27:00

Im a visiting professor at the U of A and I always stay at the Palo Verde House, Ive stayed several times with my professional team as well as my family, and we love it. After a long day in the lab the Palo Verde House is always a great escape. We keep coming back year after year, I think weve been there five or six times! The long shaded porch and the jacuzzi and the large pool and amazing garden and mountain views, its always a refuge from the East Coast winter. Yet were close to the University, where I need to be. The kids love it, and with young kids because of the walls you never have to worry about them wandering off or getting on the road. The property manager is highly responsive and always ready to troubleshoot problems. 28 September 2016 - 12:07:45

The main house was comfortable, the yard was very enjoyable. The guest house was dated and in need of an upgrade on linens and bedding. There was one bed and two sofas neither one a sofa sleeper. Not what was offered. Overall enjoyed the use of your home. Thank you 20 November 2017 - 13:48:00

This place is terrific. It has a personality, which I have found lacking in other VRBO rentals that feel like they just restocked from Costco. Nope, each piece of furniture, each plate and cup feel like they were chosen with an eye towards "Welcome". Owners and the property manager were more than clear in their expectations that they wanted us to be happy and enjoy their home and our time in it. Refreshing, relaxing. Would rent it again in a minute. Loved that they left bird seed so we could enjoy the birds while enjoying the beautiful garden from the patio. I have one caution which doesn't apply to most people's concerns... one of our family members is in a wheel chair and I had planned for them to stay in the casita...but it turns out that the bathroom is not easily accessible due to a step up and down, and its small space. They stayed in the house and it was just fine. I'm sure if I had specifically asked this question, the owners would have said just that. 03 January 2018 - 01:07:00

Walking through the gate of this home was like walking in to another world of enchantment. The house offers many great options for sleeping with numerous rooms and the guest house outside. The lawn was beautiful and our babies enjoyed being able to crawl on the soft grass during their stay in Tucson. We had a few minor issues with the hot tub to which the owner and property manager replied and sent workers over promptly. We definitely hope to return in future years! 24 March 2016 - 17:48:31

The best point we can make is that we already booked for next year! We loved the property as it afforded us outdoor living......pool, hot tub, patio etc. The garden area with the various desert plants and birds was spectacular. The property location is perfect for a variety of hiking trails, golf courses and restaurants. All this and the Arizona sun and sky....loved it. 31 March 2017 - 14:59:00
