Sarah and her family were lovely to meet and very accommodating! The room and bath were very comfortable with all the amenities I could ask for--I was especially grateful for the A/C. I appreciated the morning coffee, access to storage in the fridge, proximity to the train, restaurant recommendations for nearby, come/go as needed access, flexible scheduling, hot shower and soft bed. The room was very spacious with plenty of outlets, privacy, and a lovely little library. I would definitely stay again when visiting the Harlem/Morningside Heights area. 27 July 2017 - 20:47:00

Nice to be in a beautiful heritage home . Meeting Sara was a delight . At times were woken up by the very cute boys footsteps above in the early morning . Didn't last too long . Nice mixed neighbourhood. Everything you need close by . 08 June 2017 - 17:52:00

What an amazing place: a perfectly-kept stately walk-up circa 1870s has all the original woodwork, tile, wall-fabrics, pocket doors, brass work, gas lamps [invisibly converted to electric lights], fixtures, and parquet floors. The room is large and on the ground level; the owners inhabit the other three stories, but Sara [who was delightful] generously took us on a tour through the main house. The large bedroom could sleep two couples or a family of four, if they really get along well. The WC is down the corridor, but not shared with the owners [and there are no other rentable rooms], so available 24/7. The location is fantastic; doubly so for anyone put off by mid-town's unrelenting razzmatazz and/or nearly-lethal hipness of the Village/ABC/Bklyn. The apartment sits in a quiet uptown neighborhood literally 500 feet from the oldest house on Manhattan Island: the Jumel mansion - temporarily George Washington's base of operations during the war - in part because it is also the highest ground. The convenient "C" Line subway has a station one block away, making it easy to get anywhere in town [and Brooklyn]. Absolutely splendid and hope to return! 15 December 2016 - 21:44:00

We loved it here. A comfortable bed in a large, pleasant room. We could share the kitchen with Sara & Jean-Jacques and never got in each other's way. They are both very nice & went out of their way to help us. Just a 100 yards from the subway (C-Train) & half an hour to Times Square. Nice park near by & supermarket. Also discovered some nice restaurants (our favourite was Bono Trattoria - about 1 km away). We'll come here again. 17 October 2016 - 15:51:00

Very enjoyable stay, Sara & JJ are wonderful hosts with a great family. The room was very clean and had a "down home" feel. We would absolutely stay there again. 26 July 2017 - 13:31:00

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION! The quick walk to the train made getting everywhere in the city very easy. Sara was so sweet about our late night arrival, and everything was laid out and ready for us. Jacques was trs gentille. We came back to the house to rest between one adventure-filled day, and slept in a little the next two because the house and bed were so comfortable. We'd come back soon and often if we could. 29 May 2017 - 22:31:00

We really enjoyed our stay here. If you want to stay in a neighborhood and room with some history and character, this is for you. Sara and her family are a delight. A subway line straight to Central Park, midtown, and downtown is less than a minute walk from the front door. The neighborhood was safe and charming. We would do it again without hesitation. 06 May 2017 - 12:19:00

I stayed for a weekend getaway in the absolutely beautiful space. Everything was gorgeous, clean and spacious-which is rare for this great deal! We had a lovely breeze from the windows and enjoyed sitting by the fireplace late evening and coffee at the cafe style table by the windows with the sun shining in. The kitchen had everything we needed to make an excellent meal from groceries we found hopping from several different markets in the area. We also spent a few hours in the speak-easy style piano room, which was very cool. The owner was very communicative and helped with all our questions and concerns. This is a fabulous place to stay and I highly recommend it. I will be returning! 01 August 2014 - 17:04:59

I spent the weekend here with my fianc. I was in charge of getting us a place to stay and she was very happy with my choice. We were both pleasantly surprised with the room and the home. It was neat, clean and comfortable. It is historic home with lovely details and the garden was gorgeous. It was also convenient for traveling to other areas of the city. The owner was very nice and accommodating. My fianc is going to use this place to stay when she visits NYC with her girlfriends. 09 September 2014 - 02:02:39

My family and I recently stayed in this beautiful townhouse in Sugar Hill. The owners were incredibly accommodating and provided us with information on the neighborhood and New York City area. The bedroom was very roomy and bright and the large sit in kitchen was perfect for those days we decided to eat in. This property comes with my highest recommendation. 09 September 2014 - 20:58:12

My husband and I stayed here for a quick romantic weekend getaway and loved it! It was super quaint, charming and clean. We are avid lovers of jazz and the history this house has was an added bonus for us. Great location as we wanted to explore the famous music and food scene of Harlem but ended up finding that it was very convenient to get to any other places in manhattan. We will definitely be back!! 09 September 2014 - 19:03:32

My wife and I spent six nights in this charming townhouse in an historic part of Harlem. It was our very first trip to New York City and was a wonderful place to stay. We had no knowledge of the subway system, but Sara was wonderful in explaining how to use the A and C trains to get wherever we needed to go in the city. Sara and her family are wonderful hosts and most accommodating and welcoming. We ate out in some of the local taverns including Coogan's and the Heights Tavern and found them very acceptable for dinner. Would highly recommend this rental and would definitely come back. 13 October 2014 - 00:37:13

This beautiful home exceeded all my expectations. It was like stepping back to a time of gracious living at its best. I loved all the historic details that so reminded me of the book "Time and Again". Gracious and friendly hosts who went out of their way to make my stay unforgettable. Very easy access to midtown and all NY's sights. Lovely quiet neighborhood with Jumel Terrace around the corner...oldest home in NYC and Washington's headquarters during American Revolution. Fabulous Stay! I will be back time and again. 13 January 2015 - 23:33:36

I generously recommend staying at townhouse436. My husband and I stayed in the Garden Room for a seven day vacation. The owners, Sara and Jean-Jacques, were perfectly friendly and accommodating. We also had the good luck to meet some of their wonderful extended family. The location had the perfect balance of convenience to Manhattan and the privacy to relax after a busy day. The location is incredibly convenient for getting to anywhere on the west side of Manhattan using the Subway C stop less than 3 minutes away from 436 W162 St. There is also a convenient and nice laundry called Bubbles R Us at the intersection of W 162nd and St Nicholas Ave (near the same subway entrance). The block of W 162 Street was quiet and friendly. The nature of the accomdations were well suited for our vacation. The room is on the first floor with its own street entrance. The kitchen and closet can be directly accessed from within the Garden Room". The bathroom is down the hallway on the first floor. 04 June 2015 - 01:53:21

The "Garden Room" was the perfect "home base" for a 55+ couple. The ground-level entrance with bath and access to the family kitchen on the same level was perfect for me, since I use a cane. The room was charming and comfortable, carefully restored to this brownstone's late 19th century era. While this home is not air-conditioned, the basement level and thick walls made it naturally cool, and a fan was provided for comfort even during 85 degree days. With a subway station a few minutes' walk away, we had easy transportation to see all the sights from the Cloisters to Battery Park. But the best part of staying with Sara & Jean-Jacques was their lovely extended family, who all made us feel very welcome. The Jumel Mansion around the corner features a lovely garden. We also recommend Chez Lucienne in Harlem for a wonderful French dinner, and Pellegrino's on Mulberry St. in Little Italy for fantastic pasta. 14 June 2015 - 04:34:48

I had the pleasure of staying with Sara and her family for a two month period while I was in NYC for work. The entire experience exceeded my expectations in every regard. Of course, the property is beautiful, but what really sets this rental apart is that Sara and her entire family go out of their way to make you feel at home. In regards to more specific details that other travellers may be interested in, the residence is a 10 minute walk to Columbia-New York Presbyterian Hospital, and 1 minute walk to the subway which will get you right downtown to the more "touristy" destinations in around twenty minutes. Furthermore, the area has plenty of restaurants, grocery stores, laundry mats, and anything else you could need for a short or long stay. I highly recommend this property to anyone coming to Manhattan for work or holiday. Thanks again Sara for the wonderful time. We will be back! 19 April 2016 - 04:07:59

I was leary of booking this type of accommodation because i thought of the potential "nightmare" that it turn out to be. BOY WAS I WRONG!!! Everything was great ... it really felt like home, so much so, we hated to leave. My only suggestion is a larger, more visible trashcan inside the room, an ironing board and a small "dorm-sized" refrigerator inside the room. The extra touches of the wi-fi, pamphlets with area attractions, etc ... were nice too. 30 June 2017 - 15:47:00
