About listing

Barracca On The Bay is a secluded custom designed coastal vacation home on the East shore of the incredible Tomales Bay. It is the largest secluded shoreline vacation rental directly on Tomales Bay, and unlike other vacation homes is significantly distanced from the road noise of Hwy 1. Panoramic western views of Tomales Bay and the Point Reyes National Seashore, fill the homes interior with an ever changing theater of waterfront vistas each season. Egrets, Herons, Pelicans, and seals are frequent visitors to the shoreline against a backdrop of the sparkling blue waters of the bay, and the untouched rolling hills of the Point Reyes beyond. The lodge style home has aged cedar timbers vaulting all ceilings. Full redwood decks & panoramic windows capture western seashore, bay views, and magical sunsets. Barracca is a great private get away spot for a family, intimate reunions of friends, or couples seeking a very private romantic country retreat. Several regular guests return frequently for 'inspirational solitude' & retreats as they compose new music, write, or capture the gorgeous environment for their art or photographic endeavors. Couples return for anniversaries and families return for new explorations of the many activities in the area and to create more cherished memories. (Five star Rating in Northern California Romantic Getaways & featured in Sunset magazine) After a day of coastal exploring, hiking, kayaking Tomales Bay, biking or just relaxing, return to a cozy fire at the shell & rock hearth, watch the sunset from the expansive decks, delight in creating a wonderful meal in the gourmet kitchen , barbecue fresh local seafood, meats or world famous fresh Hog Island Oysters brought in from just down the bay. *Close the day with a soak in the spa under the cloak of the Milky Way. If you are a lover of the Point Reyes/Tomales Bay area or considering visiting for the first time, you could not ask for a more perfect home and location from which to experience this place. This home evokes the history and the charm of "old Point Reyes," but has been completely remodeled in a loving way. Beautiful and well-appointed but oh so comfortable and not the least bit fussy. We have had the most incredible times, totally at peace...wonderful barbecues of local meat and oysters, cracked fresh-caught crab in the light of a beautiful sunset, walked along the shores, seen a new species of creature with every visit (birds, fish, crab, seals, bat rays, jellyfish, starfish, and even one night, a whale that had run off course). The natural setting is incredible and changes by the hour. And 2 minutes away you can have a fabulous brunch at Nick's Cove. We launch our own small fishing boat right off the beach in front of the house when the weather is good. When the fog rolls in you look forward to cozying up by the woodstove. Point Reyes and this home possess a special quality for us. Less than an hour from San Francisco, and yet, completely transporting. My family is already planning our fourth visit in 2013. We have rented homes off VRBO in this area for 7 years. This rental is unbeatable. Romantic, fantastic for families and young children. 17 June 2013 - 22:56:02

We spent the entire month of July at Barracca and it was absolutely wonderful. The location on the edge of Tomales Bay looking across towards Hog Island and Point Reyes is spectacular with a view that changes constantly with the sun, wind fog and clouds. On a typical day we would make the beautiful 30 minute drive to Point Reyes, run on one of the many different trails and then stop in Pt Reyes station to pick up fresh fish, homemade baked goods and local vegetables to enjoy back at the house for dinner. Other excursions included kayaking on the bay, exploring the Sonoma Coast and wine tasting in nearby Sebastopol. Weve stayed in many vacation homes and have found few that were truly comfortable for more than a week or two. Barracca however, is so roomy, bright and well designed it was great for a whole month. Everything from the spacious kitchen, to the huge picture windows and the comfy beds made it easy to relax and feel at home. The house has beautifully rustic look but somehow manages a luxurious feel. If you want a place where you can really unwind and get into the rhythm of life in a magical part of the world, you would be hard-pressed to beat Barracca 05 August 2013 - 18:17:22

First and foremost. This home is not your typical rental. It is completely modern home with more then expected amenities. When we arrived we were welcomed by the view (the pictures don't do it justice). You are right there on the water. We opened the door and were greeted by a full guide of things to do in the area and how to access things in the home. They provided fresh towels, water in the bathrooms, and firewood. The kitchen is completely updated and has all the utensils and tools required. You only need to bring the local produce and food to eat. The wrap around deck and all the windows provide the perfect viewing platform for watching all the birds and sea life out in the bay. The hot tub is the perfect end to a day hiking or kayaking. Very relaxing and perfect for star gazing. If you want a quick and perfect taste of Tomales Bay, you can go five minutes up the road to Nick's Cove. North about 15 minutes away is the town of Tomales and Tomales Bakery (which is the perfect place to get a cup of joe, sweet pastries and wonderful bread. South is Point Reyes and its wonderful stores and markets. On the way stop off for fresh oysters at Hogs Bay (reservations definitely required) or Marshall Store (we ate there and had the best crab cakes and oysters outside). Overall a fantastic property and a bargain for everything you get at the house and around the house. Working with Sandy to get the reservation and information was seamless and easy to do. They promptly returned the deposit. My only recommendation is to provide a pricing option for couples that want to use the master suite with its own ensuite without having to pay an extra fee. My wife and I didnt need to use any of the two bedrooms in the main house but had to pay for them. They restrict access to the bunk room in the main house; they should provide a similar set-up for those couples only wanting to use the master suite. 07 November 2013 - 16:29:47

Barraca was perfect for our family of 6 adults and 3 school-aged children. The setting is just terrific with beautiful views of Tomales Bay, as well as plenty of encounters with sea birds, seals, and deer. It was a good base from which to explore Point Reyes and all county along the bay on both sides. We spenty plenty of time just relaxing at the house, as well. It was comfortable and we had plenty of room to spread out, but we could also all get together in the kitchen and dining area or living room. The kids loved it, discovering toys in the living room and plenty of hiding places on the property. The whole place felt far from the city, but it only took an hour and fifteen minutes to get there from our home in San Francisco. We'd happily visit again. Thanks! 11 November 2013 - 01:40:52

We rented Barraca for a long weekend away with our family (four adults and two children) and it was perfect. The house is accurately described in the listing: simply put, it has everything you might need. The kitchen is well-equipped and we used it for every meal save for two lunches. The living room is spacious with picture windows across its width looking out on the water, and includes a wood-burning stove, which was very much a bonus in the Northern California winter. We utilized both bedrooms in the main house and the separate owners' suite which is connected to the main house by a covered porch. The house is a lovely building right on the water of Tomales Bay (a long, narrow and protected estuary of the Pacific) with spectacular views of the Pt. Reyes peninsula to the West. On several days, we could see Roosevelt Elk on the hills across the bay. It has a wrap-around wood porch with lots of seating which came in handy for watching the great variety of sea birds floating on the bay. Speaking of the bay, it is not appropriate for swimming for most people. The shore here is rocky and the water (especially in February) is cold. But it is beautiful and sunsets are spectacular. Because of its location right on the water, the fresh water for showers and toilets comes from tanks located on a small bluff above and behind the house. The tanks are supplied by truck, which means that water conservation is important and encouraged and that was a great lesson for our granddaughters. They learned how to take short showers and not to leave faucets running. There is an ample supply of bottled water for drinking and cooking. The Point Reyes National Seashore is a wonderland for hikers and is less than an hour away. The town of Pt. Reyes Station is about 20 minutes away and has a well-stocked grocery store, gas stations, pharmacy, several restaurants and the locally famous Cow Girl Creamery cheese shop. Nick's Cove restaurant is less than half a mile to the north. All in all, it's a wonderful house in a wonderful location. 11 April 2014 - 02:54:15

Spent several days at "Barracca on the Bay" with four friends for a girls getaway. Truly transformative and relaxing. The house is a one of a kind nautical gem that is beautiful and yet very comfortable. It has a really good vibe and you can tell it has been host to many good times for lots of people. Tons of windows looking out at one of the more scenic views in all of California. Watched seals, pelicans, egrets, hawks and all kinds of other wildlife from the living room and front deck. Beds are cozy and the hot tub was very private and relaxing. You feel like you are in a private wonderland and yet you are within minutes of excellent restaurants and small quintessential Nor Cal towns that feel rustic and full of history and friendly folks. Plenty of room to do your own thing and get some solitude on the property as well. Highly recommended! You will want to come back. 26 October 2014 - 21:31:16

My family (a couple with adult children) just spent a long weekend at Barracca and enjoyed the house tremendously. It is in a serene location fronting the bay, from which you can hear birds and gaze at stars. It has views of the bay from large picture windows in all the public rooms (as well as the master bedroom) allowing us to enjoy spectacular sunsets. The house has large, cozily furnished public rooms and a well-appointed kitchen making it a joy to linger and chat convivially in the mornings and evenings. It has many extra thoughtful touches such as board games, binoculars, flashlights by the doors and coffee beans (and a coffee grinder) that contributed to the welcoming feel. There is also a nice restaurant (Nicks' Cove) .5 miles away which was very convenient. We highly recommend it. 14 January 2015 - 20:40:58

We feel so lucky to have found this wonderful home on Tomales Bay. It is perfectly set on the bay, wonderful views from every spot, kitchen, decks, hot tub, bedroom, and dining room. The construction of the house is impressive-while all very down to earth. The house was so well appointed, everything easy to find, in excellent condition and clean as a whistle, there were even table linens. The kitchen is a an excellent cooking space- the whole family was able to cook and be together in any room. Bedrooms were very comfortable, excellent matresses and sheets. Towels were plentiful. The sound system is amazing, the proximity to Hog Island, point Reyes and the town of Tomales made venturing out easy. The property manager was easy to work with, very responsive and helpful. The neighbors were helpful and considerate. 16 August 2015 - 04:45:16

Our family had a relaxing, fun weekend. The setting was stunning and ever changing as the light on the water created new vistas. The kitchen made it easy to prepare our meals with plenty of room for all. The house was convenient to the kayak rental place. From our five year old grandson who loved exploring the rocky shore to us grandparents who appreciated the views and sharing the space with the family, all in all, everyone had a great time. 28 October 2015 - 18:15:20

Barracca was an ideal stay for a peaceful stay right on beautiful Tomales bay! The setting is incredible; right on the bay, with a view of the green hills and at the end of a private drive. The hot tub added to the relaxation and viewing pleasure of the bay. Just sitting out next to the water is a treat to see all the bird life, snails and shark swim by! The detached master bedroom added a great privacy and view of the bay. Inside the house was a perfect setting to connect with your friends and family. Plus, an amazing vinyl collection and speakers in living room and kitchen. This rental had everything one could need. 11 November 2015 - 15:45:08

We had a girls weekend at Barracca, and it was fantastic! The house was clean and well equipped and the view was amazing! We enjoyed just sitting on the porch looking out at the water. There are a lot of great things to do nearby, but you don't even have to leave to fully enjoy yourself. The property is so quiet and peaceful. We had a small mishap with the house keys, and Sandy responded to us promptly and drove out to help. She was great, and we appreciated the extra lengths she went for us. I can't say enough about how fantastic the house and the view are. This was truly one of my favorite Tomales Bay locations I have stayed in. Loved it so much!! 24 November 2015 - 22:29:43

We so enjoyed the spaciousness within your charming home as well as the surroundings. Being away from the road in a very private setting makes this special spot a place of quiet reflection, a place for enjoying nature and a place for comfortable gatherings of friends and family. We so enjoyed that there could be several cooks in your roomy kitchen followed by a warm wood stove for cozy relaxing. Hiking in Point Reyes Park afforded lovely wildflowers tucked into the woods and peaks at the Tomales Bay vistas. We can't think of a better place to kick back, reconnect and savor the natural world. 25 March 2016 - 19:05:16

Our stay at Barracca was lovely. When we first arrived, it was close to dusk and the bay was breathtaking. The water was calm and the sunlight was reflecting off its surface. There was a harbor seal swimming right in front of the yard, and my daughter was able to get a really close up look through the spotting telescope. The house is very well equipped with everything that you would need for a relaxing and luxurious stay. It is a very comfortable house for 8 people. The living room and dining room are very spacious and well laid out. We enjoyed many hours by the crackling fire in the living room, and also cooking, laughing and eating together in the kitchen and dining room. All very comfortable! The kitchen is spacious, and well equipped. I enjoyed cooking in this kitchen a lot. Everything was clean and organized. And there is a beautiful view out the kitchen windows, over the deck looking over the bay. Quite lovely. The home is situated at the end of a quiet little bay front lane, so there are no cars driving by. It is very private. Highway 1 is just above, but honestly I never heard any noise from it... so Barraca's proximity to Highway 1 is purely convenient. I was delighted to find out that the little town of Tomales is located just about 10 minutes north, and Point Reyes is located about 20 minutes south. Barraca is private and away from everything, but conveniently located within a quick drive to a few small destinations. Most amazingly it was only 30 minutes to Highway 101 at Rohnert Park or Petaluma (whichever way you choose to drive). It seems light years away from the hustle and bustle of modern life, but is only just a short drive through the most amazing rolling hills of dairy farms. I would definitely return to this beautiful house, we enjoyed ourselves immensely. 11 February 2017 - 03:58:46

This is a perfect destination for a restful, peaceful, nature-filled getaway. The home is exceptionally comfortable--beautifully furnished and well-appointed, with spectacular views. We highly recommend this home and we will definitely be back. 23 March 2017 - 16:09:00

We couldn't have chosen a better house for our all girls book club yearly getaway. We all loved the accommodations, the private setting and the stupendous views! Close by attractions of Nick's Cove and the Elk Reserve allowed us to eat well and enjoy nature. 08 May 2017 - 02:39:00

Our family of 8 loved our stay at Barracca! Check in was easy, directions for all house operations clear. This bright, spacious, clean home is thoughtfully appointed and well equipped: a large kitchen with great views outfitted for serious cooks, which we thoroughly enjoyed; a wood stove in the living area for chilly nights; books, toys and games for all ages; a telescope and binocs; and views, views, views! We spent most of our time outside roasting something on the grill (oysters and Hatch green chiles--a family tradition moved to this location this year). Took many walks down the private lane with the kids who enjoyed the little beach, and would end the day watching the night sky from the hot tub. Highlights: reserving a picnic table at Hog Island Oyster Co. to roast freshly caught oysters and see the processing of the day's harvest (you bring all you need--BYOB, tongs, charcoal, etc.); exploring the lovely town of Pt. Reyes with it's fully stocked grocery store, French bakery, cute children's playground, and exceptionally curated local bookstore; and motoring around the bay and circling "treasure island" in two rented fishing boats to watch harbor seals and pelicans sunning themselves on the sandy shore, followed by a fun docking at Nick's Cove for lunch. A few asides: Due to years of CA drought, the owners ask that you be mindful of your water usage. There is no bathtub in the house. None of this posed a problem. Our 3 -year-old granddaughter enjoyed her first shower there! Be careful driving along Hwy 1 at night. Deer and fawns may be startled by your approach and run across. We saw ten of them one evening alone, and a fox crossing the road the next morning. Cell phone coverage is spotty to no service at various points along the bay. At the house, we switched our phones to wifi which made it generally possible to make call. There is land line. We didn't use it. While one of our party used wifi through her computer to conduct calls for various business meetings without trouble, the rest of us were there to unplug and enjoy the experience of this unique welcoming house and unique bayside lifestyle. Thanks, Barbara, for sharing! 02 August 2017 - 01:26:00

We enjoyed a week with daughters, their partners and our amazing grandkids. Could not ask for better weather - sunny skies every day!! The house was perfect - large enough to spread out but cozy enough to feel like home. We will definitely be coming back. If I could I I would give the home and the care provided to it and our comfort 10 stars!! 02 January 2018 - 19:09:00

We stayed at Barracca for four nights over Christmas and loved every minute. The house is large, comfortable well-equipped -- and the views are spectacular. It was our first vacation in the area and we only wish we had more time. It was hard to balance all of the things to do locally with our pull to stay inside and simply enjoy the house. We look forward to returning, perhaps in warmer months to have a different experience. We appreciated all of the extra touches from the owners and manager -- clear instructions, holiday decorations, follow-up e-mails, and more. All in all a great experience! 02 January 2018 - 21:13:00
