Just returned from our family visit to NYC to see the sights and stayed in this excellent appartment. If you're like me you had some concerns before booking; Was the rental genuine; was the appartment as described; what about staying in "Harlem" - isn't that bad; is the subway safe? So .. what did we find? Appartment and rental; Totally genuine, perfect appartment providing more comfortable accomodations for me and my family than a hotel at twice the price. Michael has done a good job to make sure every need is met.The place is comfortable and well equipped without being so fancy that you don't feel you can live in it and need to be careful all the time. Washer and dryer is excellent convenience. Free internet. My kids called it "home" after 1 day. One problem for some (not us) may be the 4 flights of steep stairs, no elevator. Think of the workout you get and the fact you are 30 feet above the noise of the city and downstairs appartments. Michael Cooper - a genuine, warm and caring guy who cares about a successful stay for his guests. He is thoughtful, flexible and attentive. He has this process well organized and is a genuine guy! The neigborhood - OK so this isn't perfect, but what is. There are some run down buildings which spoil the potential of neighborhood. You are probably not going to walk to any good local restaurants. But the area is safe, lots of cops, few undesirable elements. Subway is close. It was good to get out of the tourist areas each night. We felt safe and somewhat interested in the diverse characters we saw the whole time. The subway - is fantastic. The 'A train' express stop is steps (literally) from your appartment. 2 or 3 stops (10 -12 mins) and you are in midtown. It's practical to use subway to all locations. We got $28 unlimited use tickets for the week - great value. New York subway beats Paris or London for price and understandability! Airport connections. You can get a car ride; $65 plus tip. Takes an hour, sit in traffic. To go home, we took subway to Penn Station, LIRR to Jamaica and Airtrain to JFK. Stress free, also takes an hour ish, costs half as much as the car ride (for all 4 of us!). So; maybe you can find a slightly fancier rental or neigborhood on this site. But you will not find better rental value for a family, nor a more flexible concerned & helpful landlord than Michael. Ditch the Holiday Inn - stay in one of Michael's suites. We bounce around the city from year to year, trying new lodging; this was our best find ever. It was reasonably priced, clean, spacious, well-appointed, and well-equiped: as promised. Our host was available and very attentive. But we didn't need much help because the apartment had everything and he left good instructions and directions. Staying on the top floor meant several flights of stairs to climb. We did fine with the stairs. They are wide and strong, substaintially better than those we have found in other NYC town houses. And we are in pretty good shape for 60+ year-olds. Harlem was a nice experience for us, but we didn't lurk around the streets late at night. The building was attractive and newly renovated. You can look up and down the street and find rough looking places, too. But the neighbors were nice, as were all the people we met in Harlem. Proximity to transportation was perfect: take about 200 steps off the front stoop and you are in the subway station. Laguardia is just a short town car ride ($7.50) to the M60 bus stop on 125th (bus is free if you haven't used up your metropass yet). We will certainly be happy to stay here again. 06 August 2010 - 19:42:39

We stayed in NY in July 2010 - our second visit to this beautiful city. After living in a hotel during for the first visit this time we chose the Harlem Suites and had not regretted this it for a minute. The suite is spacious, clean and well equipped. Tube connections into the centre are fast and Michael really does his best to make his guests enjoy their days in NY. We loved feeling a part of the Harlem community. 100% Recommendation! 08 August 2010 - 07:56:29

We originally assumed we would need to book a hotel for our stay in New York - but the problem with hotels is that when you book two rooms, you inevitably all spend less time together. - this way we had a comfortable lounge to relax in and a well equipped kitchen if we wanted to eat in. We've booked quite a few rentals from HomeAway so we were confident that we would like what we found. The apartment looks great on the website and in real life, it certainly doesn't disappoint. The main room is light and bright, decorated in an aspirational way and very comfortable. with Apple TV and ipod amplifier. The lounge and both bedrooms had highly efficient and quiet air conditioning. The beds were ultra comfy and duvets thick and warm. The bathroom had lots and lots of fluffy white towels which was a very welcome sight. Everything was clean and looked new. Michael, the owner, couldn't have been more welcoming, charming and informative! Even though we were only staying for three days, he went out of his way to make sure we had all the information we needed for our stay which we really appreciated. The nearby subway - a hundred meters from the front door - was brilliant - the A train sped us downtown and made staying up in Harlem really convenient. And although there weren't many local restaurants, you can easily eat elsewhere and feel quite safe returning back later. We did use a couple of the local convenience shops and they were friendly, helpful and had all we needed. Michael recommended a local cab company which we used a couple of times - they were really fast arriving only a couple of minutes after the booking. Even putting out the trash adds to the experience! - we really felt like visitors and not at all like tourists. The area is interesting and is now recognised as an historic part of New York. We would definitely like to stay at the apartment again. 19 September 2010 - 18:41:07

  6. The apartment was great - very conveniently located to the subway system. Large rooms, comfy beds, plenty of light. iPod docks in the living room and both bedrooms were a great touch. AMAZING value for the money. Michael was a sweetie...he's totally the Mayor of Harlem :) I will definitely stay there again during my next visit to New York. 10 November 2010 - 20:53:29

My wife, 2 children (14 & 12) and I visited NYC in May 2010 and rented this apartment. The apartment is as described and the photos are quite representative of the flat. Michael lives on site and was helpful in orienting us to NYC and was available for questions when needed. The subway entrance is just over 100 steps from the front door which was very convenient as this was our primary mode of transportation. We felt safe in the neighborhood for the most part although we were not out late at night. Overall the rental was a positive experience and would definitely consider renting here again. 23 January 2011 - 04:30:24

Perfect hosting - thank you so much, Michael!! Was like coming home! We definitely will recommend this place to friends! But the best thing would be to have the possibility to come again! My stay at this property was superb and nothing but first class! The apartment is spacious, the decor thoroughly designed, and It is worth the stay if you truly would like to feel home away from home. Property management was very accommodating in assisting my needs and I highly recommend this place. Great location and very accessible to the A/C train, taxi. There is even off street parking free for those who may drive. I will definitely stay here again! This place looks identical to the pictues!!! 04 April 2011 - 15:37:27

...the apartment is just amazing. The subway is right in front of the door, a trip downtown takes around 20 min. Michael had put a lot of efforts in fulfilling all of our wishes. There is nothing left to say then I'll definitely come back. Thx a lot for this nice apartment and your time. 15 April 2011 - 12:03:30

This apartment was wonderful--large, light and airy, comfy beds, good kitchen, so pleasant. Big pluses: Good restaurants in the area, pharmacy, wine store, grocery within a block or two. 1/2 block to sub stop with ALL TRAINS! Super convenient. We loved the quaint ambiance of Harlem and enjoyed the diversity, while feeling perfectly safe our entire stay. The property owner is delightful-- right there if you need anything, but not intrusive in any way. One caveat: It DOES have flights of stairs to the upper floors, but we enjoyed the "stairmaster" workout and stayed in good shape on our visit. Worth the climb, and highly recommended! The experience staying at this property was so fantastic. Michael and his team were incredibly friendly and accomodating, and the apartment was beautiful. If you've ever lived in NYC, you know that taking a shower can be like standing under a slow dripping faucet, but the shower here was fantastic with hot water to spare. The kitchen was nicely stocked and the beds were extremely comfortable. Nothing but great things to say - I would happily stay here again and plan to. 28 May 2011 - 17:58:16

We stayed for a week and would highly recommend the apartment. The location was excellent, a few steps away from the subway where you could catch an express train to midtown in only 15 minutes. It is also very handy for Yankee stadium where we went to watch a ball game - you could walk to the stadium if you wanted to. Michael Cooper, the owner, was very friendly and recommended places to visit and to eat. We took up some of his suggestions and were not disappointed. For example, Covo Restaurant (Italian) and the High Line walk in Chelsea. Do not have any concerns about the safety of the area, we walked extensively around Harlem and felt perfectly safe. We would not hesitate to go back again when we are next in New York. 15 August 2011 - 11:48:43

Four of us stayed here for a week Easter 2011. All i can say if you are worried about staying in Harlem then read the front cover of the Hitch hikers guide to the galaxy DON'T PANIC. It is so easy to catch the train to where you want in in Manhattan, the station is a skip and a jump away. The rooms are very comfortable. My two teenagers loved this apartment. Book to see the baseball at the NY Yankees, it is a 20 minute walk. There are many take aways close buy, so you can eat I highly recommend peoples choice kitchen. The neighbourhood is safe, we often came home late and walked from Broadway. We have stayed in Manhattan before and this is really the best place sop far. I suggest you spend the money you save by booking this apartment and not a hotel on clothes or eating out. Make sure you go to the Apollo, best night we had. Michael the owner could not be more welcoming and helpful. He will help or get you anything you want (Within reason of course). Thank you for all your help and support. You really are a gem. Sorry it has taken so long to write this review, it got lost in space! 17 September 2011 - 17:54:54
  15. Everything about this property is great. The location is super close to the subway. The units were clean and well-maintained. The owner was very helpful and attentive. We arrived late at night and he greeted us and helped us with our luggage up all those flights of stairs (no elevator)! I highly recommend this property and if I'm ever in NYC again, will definitely try to rent one of his units. Thank you. 25 October 2011 - 19:18:54

If you want an authentic New York - Harlem experience while having a quiet place to stay, this is the place to be. Where to start...the flat. The space is clean and modern with a bright living area and quiet bedrooms. Washer and dryer with a full tub shower bathroom and an ample, stocked kitchen. There was plenty of room for our family of four to be together without being cramped into a Midtown hotel. We would definitely book the space again if given the chance. The neighborhood was great. Revitalized Sugar Hill is magnificent. The 145th St subway station is mere feet away from the building and we took full advantage of it every day. Two great coffee places nearby include the Sugar Hill Cafe, which is like stepping into another world, with good coffee and pastry. Our favorite though was Ill Cafe Latte, which had excellent coffee and great food. Wine store, grocery, and bank were all steps away. The owner is superb. A full introduction to the neighborhood and favorite places around the city highlight your greeting with him. All people should be as kind and gracious a host. The only negative is the 58 steps up to the top floor, but really, if you don't want to walk, New York is not the place for you. We came home each day exhausted and woke refreshed, ready for another exciting New York day. Perfection. 13 June 2016 - 01:27:00

Michael was the perfect host and beyond gracious! We couldn't ask for a better experience. We traveled with two people who had never been to NYC and they were blown away by our lovely suite. It's clean, comfy and very spacious. Michael went above and beyond to make sure we were taken care of. He was organized and prepared for our arrival. You cannot beat the lively location. You're within walking distance to a subway station, and grocery and liquor store. He'll give you a list of recommended restaurants and tourist attractions around the area and NYC. This will be our go-to suite for our NYC vacations going forward. You will not be disappointed! 15 May 2017 - 22:32:00

What a wonderful, spacious and well appointed apartment in the heart of lively Harlem. Only steps away from Metro Station, restaurants, and shops, this is this the place to stay in New York.
