About listing

Your own private Harlem hideaway. A quiet dreamy oasis for your busy New York stay. Enjoy life in an 1895 brownstone in one of the city's most charming historic neighborhoods. NOTE: This is just one of four unique units in the building. We also have Garden Apartment, Parlor Apartment and Guest Room. The Harlem Hideaway Studio is fully furnished and located in Uptown Manhattan, in Harlem, New York City. The apartment is on the 1st floor of a landmarked private brownstone townhouse in the Mount Morris Historic District. The all-white interior with 12' ceilings and a view of a tree filled leafy garden will instantly put you in a peaceful mood. Enter from the front stoop through the ornate carved wood entry arch and you will feel like you have just stepped back 100 years in time. All original oak details which show the charm of gently worn history. Go straight ahead to your own apartment through the 10' entry door. This Studio Apartment is very special from the time you open the door. The 12' ceilings create a special ambience and all-white room direct you to look out at the beauty of the peaceful private nicely landscaped back garden to which you have full access. Since it is in the back of the building you hear no street noise. The apartment is furnished with high end furniture, such as an original leather Corbusier sofa and raw steel full length mirror, a queen size bed (memory foam mattress) and bed stands. Also a 42'' screen mounted TV pivots out for viewing anywhere in the apartment. The bed area is carpeted for a more lush intimate feeling. The radio/iPod player holds an iPod filled with Harlem Hideaway playlist of jazz and blues. Books of New York and Harlem are provided, as well as current issues of Time Out Magazine to let you know what is currently happening in the city. There is a large closet and plenty of extra overhead storage to hide that suitcase and other items. The kitchen has a 4 burner gas stove/oven, microwave, toaster oven, toaster, coffee maker, stainless bottom freezer refrigerator and is stocked with coffee and tea. The refrigerator has a filtered water pitcher. Eat on authentic colorful fiestaware plates under the huge oversized pendant light next to the original massive black and white blow-up from a vintage science book. Check out the quirky items in the metal glass display case and you may laugh. Linens, towels, iron/board are provided, as well as lending umbrellas. A 3 speed overhead ceiling fan and quiet built-in air conditioner/heater will add to your comfort, as well as separate adjustable bedside lamps. The all white shower room with lit medicine cabinet contains an outlet, as well as a shampoo, soap and hairdryer. The separate toilet room has its own charms. Want a larger room or additional space? The adjacent room in building is the Parlor Room (Home Away # 9825450). It sleeps three to four. We also have the Guest Room (Home Away # 993020) on the top floor. Sleeps two. We also have the Garden Apartment (#3634519) that sleeps four.

First-timer/New York 'rookies' we had NO idea where to stay on our recent trip & thus, sold on pictures & price decided on Harlem Hideaway......we feel very lucky indeed! Location is so handy to subway, neighbourhood has the best people watching, so many great places to eat & drink super close. We loved getting in amongst it and found ourselves eager to get back to our little place at the end of huge days walking this colourful city. Dennis is the perfect host, great advice for our stay, he has literally thought of everything! Beautiful building & dcor, quite haven after the endless midtown crowds. Hey you can even just sit out on 'the stoop' and watch the world go by - Just do it we say!!!! Thanks Dennis & Harlem Hideaway for a most memorable time - Lynda & Dave, New Zealand 03 May 2017 - 07:55:00

The property was enough space for my wife & I. I'm glad that I lost a few pounds or using the bathroom and taking showers would have not been possible. Well, because I did lose some weight I was comfortable throughout the apartment. The apartment was nicely furnished and also had a Vizio tv for our viewing pleasure. The apartment was centrally located to bus lines, subway terminals, and shops close enough that walking didn't make us feel tired when we decided to walk. We will seriously consider renting out this space again on our next visit to NYC. 06 June 2017 - 05:01:00

My out of town guest cancelled so my fella and I decided to have a staycation in his place. The entire building is a Victorian treasure. Our studio apartment was spotless, quiet, lovely and completely comfortable. I hated having to leave. 16 June 2017 - 14:43:00

The Harlem Hideaway was absolutley perfect for our New York Holiday. We loved everything about the accommodation and the area. It was fun sitting on the stoop in the evening and chatting to the passers by. Location was excellent with the Subway a short walk away. 18 August 2017 - 15:56:00

I consider having been able to stay at a brownstone such as Dennis's a real privilege. The Studio is beautifully decorated, quiet, equiped with a bag full with useful information and within walkable distance of many of the places you are surely interested in visiting. Of course staying in Harlem implies having a whole different outloook of New York, and that was welcome to! To sum it all up, I sure hope I'll come back to Harlem Hideaway ... 25 October 2017 - 17:13:00

My best friend and I stayed 5 nights with Dennis in Harlem and are already planning a return trip. The location was great! The neighbourhood was a nice distance away from the madness of midtown for us. The metro station is very close and the red line takes you straight into the thick of Manhattan. The apartment was clean and comfortable and had everything we needed. The owner, Dennis, was friendly and attentive and made us feel right at home! We will definitely stay here again the next time we visit NY. 23 May 2012 - 15:01:02

The moment I arrived at the studio, and saw it for the first time, I almost cried. It was so peaceful, so welcoming--that I quickly forgot about my 24 hrs of flight delays! In fact, my husband had to force me to leave the apartment on multiple occasions, because all I wanted to do was luxuriate in bed and watch the million channels on TV. The apartment is even more beautiful than the pictures--the attention to detail is astounding. How would Dennis know to put the EXACT toiletries I had forgotten in the medicine cabinet? It seemed like every time I turned to look for something--there it was, right where it should be. The neighborhood is great: not touristy, express 2/3 train, wine shop, bodegas, banks, churches, a full supermarket, a Conways... all within a three block radius. The neighborhood is also safe. I walked alone late at night and never felt nervous. Dennis, the owner, is great. I am envious of his sense of style and his decoration talents. I can't wait to go back! 26 July 2012 - 15:16:14

My wife and I stayed in Harlem Hideaway from 6 to 20 August 2012 as our first experience of New York and indeed the USA. We had no difficulty locating the apartment from the instructions provided by the owner. We were given a very pleasant introduction to the apartment and its facilities and to services in the area. The owner was invariably helpful and provided useful information about Harlem in particular. The apartment contains some excellent reading material, New York guides and a directory to all of the local services. He was always ready to assist and responded immediately to any inquiries we had. The apartment reflects its description in the listing. It is clean and tastefully decorated. It is located on a pleasant tree-lined street in an area which shows signs of thoughtful restoration. The neighbours and service providers were invariably friendly and helpful. We made use of a number of local services including supermarkets, restaurants, a coffee bar and a laundry which provided a good standard of service at a very reasonable price. We joined the locals at a concert performed by a great Puerto Rican group at Marcus Garvy Park. There is a great sense of neighbourhood in Harlem. Just a couple of blocks away is a subway station with a line that runs from Bronx to Brooklyn and from one end of Manhattan Island to the other. We invariably used this and the link lines for our transport around New York. Thanks for the experience there! We had a great couple of weeks. We would certainly be recommending to any of our friends visiting New York that they should consider this apartment as a place to stay. 26 August 2012 - 23:35:53

What a great hideaway in a lively and and diverse neighborhood. Dennis was the perfect host, and the Parlor unit we stayed in was perfect. Very well appointed, comfortable, and comfortably accomodated my wife, daughter and I. We celebrated an early Thanksgiving, and Dennis graciously allowed us to use the unit for our dinner with friends and family. A truly memorable stay and we would definitely come back here. Harlem is a great area and very accessible to the rest of the city. This really was a home away from home. Thanks Dennis! 12 November 2012 - 22:22:38

Excellent accomodation! The piped in blues and jazz on the retro radio was the perfect ambiance for a stay in an area with such a rich history. This is my second stay in Harlem. As an expat of the NYC area, I am so proud of how this community has achieved urban renewal without losing its soul. I'll stay here again. Thanks Dennis! 24 November 2012 - 20:05:23

The Harlem Hideaway was the perfect place to stay for our get-away. It was quiet and peaceful, clean and cozy! With just a few blocks from the subway, we were able to get where we needed to go in no time. Dennis was very accomodating ... one of our favorite parts was him taking a few minutes of his time upon check in to share a few Harlem favorites. Our favorites - Harlem Shake for some delicious burgers and shakes and the Apollo for Ameteur Night. The people of Harlem were friendly and we felt safe when were out and about. We have already recommended the Harlem Hideaway and hope to get back there soon for another visit! 04 December 2014 - 20:17:26

Dennis was wonderful, provided us wth great information and local knowledge. After touring around Manhattan and its busyiness it was great to return to Harlem Hideaway each night. The apartment was nice and cosy compared to the Winter outside. Do yourself a favour and have good soul food at Amy Ruth's. Close to the subway and Central Park. The people of Harlem were very friendly and willing to help out lost tourists.Overall a very pleasant stay of two weeks, if I come back to NYC, I would definitely return to Harlem Hideaway. Home Away provided a great level of service. 09 January 2015 - 22:47:46

We really enjoyed our stay in Dennis' apartment which looks exactly as on the pictures. The street is nice and quiet, but everything you need is there: supermarket, pharmacy, restaurants and bars for everybody's taste! Around Halloween time when we were there, the houses were imaginagery decorated. After long trips through NY we really appreciated the great and comfortable mattress and clean bet linen. We will be back for sure! Thank you, Dennis for everything! S&A 04 November 2017 - 13:58:00

My request for only 1 night on New Years Eve was welcome news to me, I had to pay a $50 premium for this. Fortunately If you follow the directions from the owner and use the correct exit from the subway it will be easy. Its a bit scary at night though. The unit itself was very clean, tasteful and warm. The owner was very friendly, Unfortunately our flight was later that afternoon, the cleaner had arrived and we were rushed out, what a pity. 13 January 2014 - 13:41:29
