We pride ourselves on our personal service and friendly welcome to all our guests. We enjoy sharing the beauty of this historic building with you. THE CONSERVATION AREA: The village origins of Winchmore Hill (first mentioned in the history books in the 14th century as a village on the route to the Royal Hunting Forest) still reveal themselves in the historic buildings around The Green, and in a friendly community atmosphere, unusual in a capital City like London. OUR HISTORY: The Old Bakery is believed to have begun life in about 1595AD as a village hall with central huge fireplace and vaulted ceiling, before becoming, first, a farmhouse, then, in 1822AD, the village Bakehouse, and finally a private home . The Bakery was run for many years by Quakers and Winchmore Hill was an historic a centre of early Quakerism (The Society of Friends). The nearby Quaker Meeting House is still in use, surrounded by a beautiful garden. I bought the Old Bakery in 1978. At first we used the whole of the Old Bakery as a family home, but once the children grew up and had homes and families of their own, we found that we no longer needed such extensive accommodation. So we separated the Baker's Cottage from the other section of the building which was formerly the working bake-house. We also converted the old Stables to living accommodation for guests. Of course, the family love the Old Bakery very much and gather here frequently with an increasing number of our grandchildren.

We so enjoyed our stay at the Old Bakery. The house was clean and very well maintained, and Nina was a wonderful hostess (and her son too, who greeted us on arrival on her behalf). She was very responsive by email and was easy to get ahold of when needed. she provides loads of books and pamphlets to aid you in sightseeing (even Rick Steves haha). We love the affordability and value of a vacation rental, and this didn't disappoint. The rental is very convenient to the train station and a bus stop, perfect for getting to the city in about 30 min, with a change to an Underground... Just be sure to factor this into your scheduling, and avoid rush hour. The shopping area and restaurants around the rental are all excellent, especially the deli across the street. The area itself is worth spending some time exploring, There is a beautiful park nearby, and Rocco's had some delicious gelato. I would recommend this rental to anyone, my mother was along with us and loved it. Thanks, Nina and Stephen, for making our stay in London so enjoyable and perfect for exploring locally and in the city. 14 September 2013 - 13:10:10

The Old Bakery lived up to our expectations and provided comfortable and cozy accommodation for a family of four in charming and slightly posh Winchmore Hill (WH). We were met by the proprietor's son, who showed us everything and made us feel really welcome. In the living rooom there were fresh tulips and in the fridge even some freshly bought food. Even though the building obviously is several hundred years old and the rooms hence are small and low-ceilinged, the facilities are modern and adequate and everything is clean and in perfect working order. During our oval weekend we found little to complain about. My only grief was that the doors are quite low, so persons over 1.80 m must take care negotiating them to avoid bumps in the top of their head. The stairs between the floors are steep and narrow, but still no challenge to kids and youngish people like ourselves. We planned to use WH as a base for our excursions to central London, and as the train station is only a few minutes away and the train ride in to the city is only 25-30 minutes, this proved to be a winner strategy. Coming back to WH after a day of sightseeing in town was like coming to a village in the countryside: Quiet, with narrow streets and well-maintained houses and gardens. The immediate surroundings offer ample choice of good pubs, tea rooms and small restaurants, as well as shops and groceries. Eating: We can really recommend the turkish restaurant on the Green, Samdan, that serves great mezes and other dishes for a reasonable price. The Greek on the Green is also good value, but lacks a bit in atmosphere. Transport: Getting to WH from Stansted airport was a breeze, thanks to a taxi from the local company Greenfox that were waiting for us and took us to our door for around 45 pounds, cheaper than taking the train - and much more convenient. They also picked us up for our return trip, Conclusion: We would love to go back any time and can totally recommend The Old Bakery to anyone without a disability! My second stay at Chalkley's and once again it was memorable. The area remains delightful and interesting, the connections to central London are convenient, and the apartment was both distinctive and extremely comfortable. 19 June 2015 - 02:06:45

We had a really wonderful stay at The Old Bakery. Nina was extremely friendly and helpful. The Old Bakery is located by The Green in Winchmore Hill. A lovely location. Great deli opposite, supermarkets nearby, fabulous Indian Restaurant (Winchmore Tandoori) Only one minute from the station .... and yet we didn't hear a train once in the house! 25 minutes in to London. Perfect. Absolutely perfect. Highly recommended and I'm sure we'll be back. 27 November 2014 - 11:32:29

Nina offers unique accommodation in a wonderful area of London. It met all our expectations. The maps provided, directions and suggestions for day trips were great. The local pub, tea room and the "deli" offered the best food. Great to come back to after a busy day sightseeing in London. We would highly recommend the 'Old Bakery' to family and friends. Hope to return. 13 October 2015 - 17:49:17

A warm and personal wellcome by Anita. The apartment was well equiped and clean. Lots of good and up-to- date guides with walks, things to do and very helpfull local information. Although Winchmore Hill felt like a village, London's centre was only a short train- ride away! We surely recommend the Stables to every one who likes London and loves a quiet living-space. 9. Beautful quaint homely, ideal for relaxing or busy sight seeing holiday. If you have trouble climing stairs, the spiral staircase in this property should be avoided. As for anybody else you could not stay in a cooler more unique gem that this. Owner is so helpful. 13 December 2015 - 06:04:04

In February 2016, our family of four stayed five nights at Chalkley's The Old Bakery in Windmore Hill, London. The apartment was perfectly situated for us to take the train or underground into the heart of the city or to get in our car for day trips on the outskirts of London. The place was very clean, warm, and beautifully kept, and the beds were super comfortable. We especially liked that there were two twin beds for our two teenagers to be able to sleep separately. The kitchen was stocked with basic breakfast fare, which was a nice surprise. There were ample restaurants nearby (both within walking distance and a short drive) to satisfy whatever cuisine we felt like having for dinner. We want to thank Nina for having provided lots of information about things to do in and around London. She was a wonderful hostess. We highly recommend Chalkley's Old Bakery to other guests. We would happily stay there again. 23 February 2016 - 01:21:00

Fantastic location 20 mins outside the city with all the amenities and conveniences for a relaxing family holiday. Nina Anstee, the owner, and the Old Bakery property were fantastic and this location in the idyllic village of Winchmore Hill could not have been more perfect. There were parks nearby, and with the station a mere 2-3 mins from the property, we never missed our train for our almost daily sojourns into the city. We spent the holidays in Winchmore Hill and were able to avail ourselves of everything we needed. A Sainsbury's (just a short 10 min walk) and the Shop Point (just steps away in the village) offered us everything we needed. We stayed in the 2 bedroom, 2 bath apartment which provided us with just the right mix of historic flavor and modern conveniences (kitchen and baths) for four adults. Look no further for a taste of Olde England in a perfect location just outside the city. 28 February 2016 - 14:30:55

This is a cozy, 2 bed, 2 bath home in the heart of Winchmore Hill. It was close to the train and the high street. We had some issues with the wifi which were eventually addressed. It's a great option for small families. 03 April 2016 - 22:11:41

We had a lovely stay and loved the area a lot! This property is right around the corner from the subway and restaurants, grocery store and deli. Nina gave us Milk, butter and a delicious loaf of bread fresh from the deli! Also fresh flowers on the table too! We used the washing machine which came in hand and their is a laundry mat with a dryer a few feet away in which we used once. We had a fun stay Thanks Nina 25 May 2016 - 05:33:00

Although our stay at the Old Bakery was short, 4 nights only, it was thoroughly enjoyed by all in our group. The property was very clean, Nina was very friendly and helpful in recommending places to visit. Winchmore Hill is a tidy, pretty place. The close proximity to the Train Station was defiantly a plus, only 2 mins. away. We wish we had a longer stay to take in more of he surrounding area, hopefully another time. 26 May 2016 - 20:25:00

Nina was nice and helpful. The location was great for the train and food. The downstairs was cozy. The stairs were insane, too steep. All sources of water was upstairs, kitchen and baths. The water pressure for hot was like a dribble. The noise for the pump to the toilet and bath was awful. The one bath had only a tub. The handheld shower attachment barely worked. Floor in the double bedroom was so slanted you had the feeling you were falling out of bed. Only got clean towels the first day. Would have thought if we were staying a week we would've got fresh ones sometime. Attractive building but the inconveniences out weighs the good. 31 May 2016 - 08:31:00

Chaulkly's is simply lovely. Impeckably furnished, very neat, and functionable. The pictures you see is exactly what you get. Winchmore Hill was a great area ( lovely restaurants, Sandam, King's Head Pub and Deli on the Green were our favorites. It's location is 30- 45 minutes from London attractions. However the transportation either National rail Service or underground are great. (Southgate Station is usually the quickest to get in town.) Sainsbury is the best grocery around. Everyone in Britain is friendly. ( and helpful to re-route if one of the train lines goes down). So pleased with this vacation. It was worth the 6 month wait. Thank you to Nina for being lovely. 20 June 2017 - 19:47:00

This location was wonderful! Granted, it may take you a bit longer to get places than if you are staying right in the heart of London, but you really will feel as if you've moved into a neighborhood and you're making new friends! The girls at the Deli on the Green (a 30 second walk) became good friends and we started most morning with coffee and a roll before setting out. Most nights we grabbed takeaway and ate in front of the telly. There's a small store which stocks just about everything AND it has a cash machine and that's a 60 second walk. We got to know Paul at the wonderful jewelry store, Mistress Appleby's and found gorgeous pieces! Nina is a gracious and knowledgeable host and had sent us so much great information prior to our visit that we knew how to get from Heathrow on the tube, that we needed to buy our National Rail tickets to Bath and Cardiff in advance to save tons of money, and she has a great library of guidebooks. Everything was clean and well-kept and we knew we could count on Nina to handle any issues. (When she went out of town, she had her son step in--very reassuring!) You can LIVE in history! A few suggestions: Take one suitcase---seriously, ONE! Even our one suitcase apiece and carry-on, got pretty heavy by the end of the Heathrow to Southgate to Winchmore trip. When you have easy access to a laundry, you don't need a ton of clothes! London dresses much more comfortably than Paris, so jeans, minimal jewelry and a tote bag for your umbrella, really comfortable shoes and layers will handle everything Do not bother with taking the train from Winchmore Hill Station. You're going to have to change anyway, so just take the W9 bus (it's on the same side of the street as the Old Bakery, the bench on the Green) a short 10-minute ride to Southgate Station and take the Piccadilly Line wherever you need to go. BELIEVE NINA WHEN SHE TELLS YOU ABOUT THOSE STAIRS!!! If you have ANY mobility issues, arthritic knees, balance, anything, then you will not enjoy navigating them. The privilege of living in such an amazing historic place means that the original architecture has been preserved as much as possible and that includes the original stairs. Use the laundromat around the corner. Pat will do your laundry and, in our case, delivered it back to Nina and Bruce because we were out all day. It's not worth it to wash in the machine upstairs and haul wet stuff to the dryer-- it only cost 5 pounds to have Pat do it all. 25 June 2016 - 15:39:00

Very impressive gem of a place, situated in beautiful Winchmore Hill. We truly felt at home straight away we stepped inside. I would definitely recommend staying in this beautiful place - it is just wonderful and nearby to Winchmore Station taking you into the bustling capital city. 22 February 2017 - 17:19:00

To stay at a historic house that is over 350 years old was a dream since I was a child, so we discide to stay at the old bakery. It was a fanstastic place with history in every corner of the house it seams you could listen to all the stories from former inhabitants. The beds are perfect, the two bath rooms are brand new and the kitchen includes everything you need. But mind your head at the lintel of every door the people in former time where a little bit smaler. In a distance of 7 min. walk you'll find one super pub, 4 restaurants and the Larder a fine place for an english breakfast where we started our day. 3 minutes walk to the station Winchemore Hill to start the daily tour to London City within 30 minutes you are at the Oxfort street or Piccadily Circus. Trains are running from 4 am to 12 pm or you stay at the Piccadily line up to Southegate 24 hours a day and catch a cab to the old backery. A super place to stay. Thank you very much Nina and Bruce it was an honour to stay at the old backery we are looking forward to come back to your beautifull house. Best regards Stefan and family 22 October 2016 - 16:30:00
